Best Car Insurance
1. Liberty Mutual
These guys take the top spot because they are a great all-around selection for just about any individual or family. Whether looking for a single auto insurance policy or services to cover a number of different assets, Liberty Mutual can provide just that. They are located across the United States, so they can cover the vast majority of Americans.
The company is organized as a mutual, which means their policyholders are their primary shareholders. Unlike other public or privately held insurance companies, Liberty Mutual funnels a lot of their profits back to the people who are insured with them. This usually means lower premiums or dividend checks.
It is hard to go a day without seeing a Geico ad, and their marketing efforts have certainly paid off. As one of the largest auto insurance companies in the US, Geico can offer coverage to just about anyone in any state. They are a great choice for individuals with good driving records, as their rates are often some of the lowest you will find. (See our 2013 rate study here)
Consumers can purchase policies directly from Geico’s website without ever actually talking to a person. Because of this, you should have a basic understanding of how insurance works and what your needs are before going this route. If this the idea of doing it all yourself scares you, they also offer 24 hour phone assistance as well as more traditional licensed agents you can meet with face-to-face.
Another direct-to-consumer insurance company, Esurance began as an online-only auto insurance firm that sold policies on their website and over the phone. They have since been acquired by Allstate and policies can now be purchased from agents.
Esurance focuses on car insurance, so they are a great choice for individuals just looking to insure their automobile. They have very competitive rates for good drivers, and offer a lot of discounts, so it is important to pay attention to their entire list when applying.
In many lists, this company would be at the top. We strongly believe that USAA is one of the best auto insurance companies out there (and best home insurance companies as well) but they are not available to everyone. If they were, they would definitely be up a few spots.
USAA is open to members of the armed forces as well as their family, so you must be related to a servicemen or women in order to get coverage. Their rates are very competitive, but where they really get high marks is when it comes to their customer service. USAA is known for taking care of their clients like a white-glove insurance company without charging ridiculously high rates.
5. State Farm
Rounding out our top five is the king of auto insurance, State Farm. They are the largest car insurance provider in the United States and sell in all 50 of them. Despite their sheer size, their prices are very competitive for a full service insurance firm that operates primarily through licensed agents.
Anyone who likes the traditional agent-to-customer way of the insurance business should consider State Farm. Their agents are not employed directly by State Farm, so they operate more as a local small business rather than a large multinational firm.
