Founders Insurance traces a long history to its roots as an Illinois fire insurance company. The company today writes a selection of personal and business insurance across most of the nation while maintaining its local roots.

About Founders

Founders’ history goes back to 1901, with the creation of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company in the Chicago area of Illinois. In the 1960s, Mutual Fire Insurance Company merged with a foundry workers insurer known as Founders Mutual under the name Illinois Founders Insurance Company.

In 1999, as the company expanded nationwide, the name of their founding state was dropped from the name.

Founders today maintains offices in five states and is licensed in 47 states as well as the District of Columbia. The headquarters remain in the Chicago area. Their small list of products includes personal auto insurance and home insurance, commercial auto, and liquor liability.

Founders sell their products mainly through independent agents across the country, and product availability varies by state.

Founders Products

On the personal lines side, Founders writes auto and home insurance, while the business side includes commercial auto and liability, specifically liquor liability.

Auto Insurance

The Founders auto program offers coverage on both standard and non-standard levels, but their main focus is on the non-standard market. Their auto policies are available in Ohio, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

As a non-standard insurer, Founders promises coverage with flexible payments and no credit requirements. They also write policies, including non-owner options, for people with international drivers’ licenses, requiring SR-22s, or with problematic driving records.

They offer a basic list of discounts but do not provide much information in terms of coverage.

Home Insurance

Founders write both homeowners and renters insurance; homeowners insurance is only offered in Illinois.

Like their auto, Founders does not require a credit check for homeowners but covers only owner-occupied properties. Their plans appear to cater to those who might not have qualified for coverage from other companies.

They have several programs, including standard homeowner’s package insurance and policies for older homes with limited coverage. Founders also offer coverage for condos and townhomes.

Renters insurance is also offered to cover personal property; there is no indication on the website as to in which states this program is offered.

Commercial Auto

Founders write light commercial auto policies, which are for vehicles weighing less than 16,000 lbs. and traveling within a 200-mile radius. Like their other programs, Founders offers coverage to those who have difficulty obtaining it due to international or unverifiable licenses, but the company does have a surcharge for this.

The program specializes in snow plowers and landscapers, but it is available to a range of other business types, including carpet cleaners, auto parts delivery, window installers, and messenger services.

Commercial Auto is offered in Illinois and Indiana.

Liquor Liability

A specialty of the company, Founders writes liquor liability for bars, clubs, restaurants, caterers, and many more businesses where alcohol is served.

They also provide special liquor liability policies for events like weddings, festivals, fundraisers, or other types of parties and gatherings.

Rates

Founders does not offer online quoting, which is common for a smaller, agent-driven company. The website will help visitors to find a local agent in order to obtain a quote.

Since this company is focused on the non-standard market, we would not expect their rates to compare to those from a standard insurance company.

Claims

Founders does offer an online claims filing option, for both customers and those involved in an accident with a Founders policyholder. There is also a toll-free claims line, but we had to visit the contact page to find it, as there is not a dedicated claims section on the company website.

The company does have a policyholder login area, beyond which there may be more information on claims; outside of this, there is almost no mention of claims or how processing is handled.

Ratings and Customer Reviews

Founders has an A+ rating with the Bette Business Bureau (BBB), but there are 195 complaints on file in the past three years. Although it does not seem to have affected the rating overall, this is a pretty high number for a relatively small and unknown company. Of the complaints listed, 38 have been closed in the past 12 months.

Founders has 192 Google reviews, which, again, is a lot for this type of company. The overall rating is 1.3 stars and the vast majority of the reviews are very negative. There are repeated complaints about poor customer service, unreturned phone calls, slow response, and denial of claims.

Among the 20 Yelp reviews, there are a handful of positive comments, but the overall rating remains a dismal 1.5 stars. Again, the same comments about the company’s claims service and responsiveness are repeated here.

Overall, the reviews leave a pretty negative impression of Founders.

The Bottom Line

While those in search of non-standard insurance can often feel they have limited choices, there are other choices and companies with fewer complaints recorded against them. From our research, most of the complaints centered on auto insurance, so this company may be a better choice in other areas – but again there does seem to be a lot of complaints, there is a possibility you will find better value elsewhere.

  1. [Redacted] is most incompetent of them all. This business is just sad and deserves zero stars. Awful customer service, I was also denied the right to speak with a manager.

    • They accused me of stealing my own car so they don`t have to pay on the claim !!!! It`s been over six months now !!!!! Had to hire a lawyer to sue them – still ongoing. I have been a full coverage customer for 4 years with them, never made a claim before this, GREEDY, GREEDY company. Going back to Safe Auto where they treat you better, without calling you names!!!!!

  3. Horrible service. Not only did it take 2 days to speak to someone, when I did speak to someone they told me they are waiting for their insured driver to call them back. Of course, I asked the big question and she said yes if he doesn’t respond it doesn’t get resolved. They made 1 phone call and that was it. This is the worst insurance company I have ever dealt with.

  4. My car was hit by a founders client & it’s been nothing but games since .. I’m currently without a car & 30 weeks pregnant with no transportation. When I call they connect me to different people only to get the run around once again. Now they offered me a low ball price for my car so I’ll be taking money from my funds to pay for damages they’re client caused. Very disappointing..

  7. Founders Insurance is a horrible company. My car was hit by one of their insured. I called and made a claim to get my car repaired. They asked me to get two estimates sent to them since they were not in my state where the accident occurred. I got the estimates sent to them and they then wanted to sent an independent assessor to do a third estimate. I again got that estimate done. Once the received the third estimate they contacted me stating that they agreed with their independent assessors estimate and that they will only cover 70% of the cost. Their insured was totally at fault for the accident and they don’t want to cover the cost to repair my vehicle. I will advise anyone who is considering getting insurance with this company…DON’T. If you have insurance with them you may want to change insurance company before you need to make a claim and get left in the cold.

  8. I am a founders insurance customer. And I am beyond displeased with the survive I have gotten after I was plowed into from another driver.
I called Founders to let them know what I should do next. They told me to call the other guy’s insurance company. Founders would not help me with MY OWN claim. Unbelievable.
They would not call and converse with the other person’s insurance, could not do squat for me.

I asked the adjuster word-for-word if I was [redacted] out of luck and her response was “yes.”

I.promise.to God, I will be taking my business elsewhere.

    I’m [redacted].
    This company is horrible.

  9. Worst insurance place I’ve ever dealt with. Ive been trying to cancel my insurance for 2 months and the just won’t cancel it. They’ve caused my account to overdraft twice. Everytime I ask to speak with a manager I get a voicemail, and have yet to get a call back. I’ll be calling a lawyer tomorrow.

  10. Terrible service! My tire blew out on the highway going 50+ mph and the tire stripped some electrical wire when it blew. So I got a new tire and tried to fix the wires but the car got extremely worse over the next few days. I contacted Founders to claim my car so I can get it fixed. It took 2 weeks for the adjuster to come out to look at my car. He said he would contact us in 2 days to see how much they were going to offer, it took another 2 weeks for us to finally get ahold of him and his answer was “We are waiting on the claim to go through. We aren’t sure yet.” When it came time to fix the car, the dealership needed to give Founders and estimate of how much the car damage would cost and Founders went M.I.A! No one answered any phone calls, I couldn’t get ahold of anyone! After a week of not getting ahold of anyone, Founders answered the phone, I asked what their decision was because the dealership needed to give an estimate, the guy said “Unfortunately there is not much we can do.” A whole bunch of lies! As of today, the insurance didn’t do anything to help fix my car. I had to pay the dealership fully out of pocket, which was a few thousands of dollars. Founders does nothing to help you! They just want your money. They are terrible! Getting a new insurance tomorrow.

  11. I am very displeased with your company. I am not a client. Your client caused damage to my car and when we tried to contact your agent he was hard to get a hold of. Then when we did get a hold of him,we told him where we were taking our car to get it fixed, he got rude because we wasn’t taking it to one of his dealers. When our person sent him the estate to for our car. They sent only half of what was need to fix what damage your client did to our car. On top of all this it took them a month to get to our claim after we reported it.if you are that good of of company you need to check in on what is going on!

  13. Attempting to return a call from a Founders representative for two weeks. I’ve left 4 messages with name, number and claim number each time and as of yet haven’t received a call back. Rear ended by a Founders insured driver and just trying to get bills paid, that’s it. Getting ready to lodge a complaint with the Ohio Attorney General. Why should my credit take a hit because of a irresponsible driver and incompetent insurance company. All I want is the few bills paid. I’m not looking for money for myself, just to have the bills from the accident taken care of.

    • Wife was rear ended by a customer of Founders, Did not make a payment on the vehicle, and was dealing with Founders for over two weeks, and finally got voice mail from the claims officer assigned that the accident claim was denied, It appears that their insured that hit our vehicle was NOT insured to drive his own vehicle, he would have been if he was driving someone elses vehicle. So, I am out my $500.00 deductable from my insurance company to pay for damages and run the risk of my rates being raised for an accident that was NOT my fault. It also appears that Founders never told their insured/uninsured customer of the limitations on the policy. My sympathies to all that have this insurance.

  15. My claim is cut and dry. A founders insured driver hit me and founders forced me to tow my totaled car to my home because they will not pay for storage fees at the body shop I had taken it to initially – fine. Well about a week later they call me back and say they their estimator agreed our claim is indeed a total loss situation and they’d be paying us for our car and our case is being handled by their “total loss claim adjustor” – fine. Well it’s been TWO MONTHS since then and I haven’t been able to contact any one inside their building since. This insurance company is AWFUL. I’m out money for replacing my car and I get no replies to any of my calls or emails.

  16. On July 27 2016 I was hit by someone who had founders insurance and am already getting the run around. Had to threaten legal action to get a call back only to now have some other person tell me that the person handling my case is “away from the office this week” and that i should call their number, leave a message and that someone will periodically check the messages. This makes no sense to me! Obviously insurance that states they insure HIGH RISK means they are the WORST insurance company EVER. STAY AWAY theaters gotta be another insurance company people can use. SHUT FOUNDERS DOWN

  17. I’m insured by Founders. They are slow, they have long wait times when u call. They take forever to handle and process claims. What kind of company does this to their clients. It’s been 2 days short of a month and my uninsured motorist claim has not been handled yet. I am seriously pissed of that I pay these [Redacted] to insure me. Unbelievable…. my claim was filed may 25 here it is June 21st n still no word. After my claim is processed I’m looking for a new insurance company because they really suck.. Worst experience and customer service ever.

  18. I’m trying to get someone from Founders Insurance to call me back regarding claim # [Redacted]. I have called and emailed Founders Claim Rep [Redacted] to no avail. A Founders client caused a four car accident back in September of 2015. Their client was cited on scene. I faxed them the accident report the day after the accident (the Founders rep claimed they could not retrieve it). It still took them over 3 weeks just to determine liability. My vehicle was inoperable due to the accident so it just sat at the auto repair shop. Founders haggled over giving me a vehicle. They tried to insist I take a compact vehicle even though my vehicle seats seven passengers. They dragged my claim out so long that I was forced to use my own insurance company. I finally got my van back in DECEMBER!!! Ten weeks after the accident for $1600 worth of damage. Now they refuse to compensate me for my pain, suffering, lost wages, and inconvenience. The level of customer service at Founders is terrible. If anyone out there EVER has a claim with them, do yourself a favor and retain an attorney. I wish I would have.

    • was it because you did not see a doc? Or they just denied your pain and suffering?

      • I did see a doctor. Founders did finally settle with me after almost three months of ignoring my calls and haggling with me over money ….. All I can say is if I ever have to deal with Founders Insurance again, I will retain an attorney.
