Since the turn of the 20th century, Ohio Mutual has been protecting Midwesterners against unforeseen risks. Today, they cover seven states with personal, business, and farm insurance products.

Ohio Mutual Summary

Ohio Mutual was founded in 1901 as the Ohio Mutual Tornado, Cyclone, and Windstorm Insurance Association. As the name implies, the company offered insurance to protect against common natural disasters in the Midwest.

In 2010, the company acquired Casco Indemnity, which expanded their operations into New England. Today, they write insurance products in seven states: Ohio, Indiana, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. They remain a mutual company, meaning they are owned by their policyholders.

Ohio Mutual writes both auto insurance and homeowner’s insurance for individuals, as well as business and farm insurance. Not all products are available in all of the states they cover, however.

Ohio Mutual sells its products through local independent agents in all seven states, and does not offer online quoting at this time. They remain headquartered in Bucyrus, Ohio, with an office in Maine as well since the New England expansion.

Insurance Products

Ohio Mutual writes basic personal insurance products as well as package policies for businesses and farm owners.

Auto Insurance

Ohio Mutual writes auto insurance in all but one of the states they cover. Auto is not available in Indiana, where Ohio Mutual only provides business insurance.

Policies offer all of the most common coverage, including liability, collision, and comprehensive. However, the company also offers more unique coverage options such as stereo equipment and media coverage, trip interruption, transportation costs, and new car replacement.

Ohio Mutual also offers a range of discounts including senior driver, good student, and multi-policy. The program offers some good options, but overall it is a fairly basic auto insurance policy.

Home Insurance

Homeowner’s is available in five of the seven covered states; it is not available in Indiana or Connecticut.

Ohio Mutual’s homeowner’s insurance program is also relatively basic, although, they do have several add-on options to expand the coverage. Basic coverage protects against a variety of perils and covers structure, personal property, and liability.

Optional coverage includes:

  • Identity Theft
  • Guaranteed replacement cost
  • Personal property replacement cost, as well as riders for high-value items
  • Sewer and water back-up
  • Earthquake insurance
  • Seasonal residence liability coverage

Ohio Mutual’s Town and Country Program is a special policy designed to provide coverage for a main residence as well as a seasonal residence or rental property in one. There are also options to cover farming liability and other risks under the same policy.

Additional Products

Business Insurance

Available in all seven covered states, business insurance is sold in separate or package policies.

Coverage options include:

  • Property
  • General Liability
  • Inland Marine
  • Commercial Auto

Businessowner’s package policies are available as well as special packages for artisans. There are also special multi-peril packages available.

Farm Insurance

Farm insurance is sold only in Ohio, and covers small and large farming operations. They offer a farmowner’s package policy that covers the farm dwelling, additional structures, and equipment under one policy.

There are a variety of coverage benefits that are designed for the particular risks of farms. These benefits include equine coverage, milk contamination coverage, and several discounts and add-ons available.

Ohio Mutual Rates

As stated earlier, Ohio Mutual does not offer online quoting, nor do they provide coverage in our usual comparison states, so we are unable to provide a rate comparison.

As a regional insurer working through independent agents, Ohio Mutual is not likely to have the lowest rates around. Companies like this rely more on reputation and service than low rates to get and keep their customer base. Although they may be somewhat competitive with companies on the same level, particularly for low-risk policyholders who qualify for multiple discounts, they are unlikely to be on par with major national direct-buy companies.

Claims

Ohio Mutual offers a 24-hour toll-free claims line: 1-888-895-7725 for policyholders to report claims. Claims can also be reported to an agent during regular business hours.

There is no option to report a claim online, which is not surprising for a smaller, regional insurance company.

Claims can be tracked by calling a different toll-free number: 1-800-686-3011

There are two claims offices – one is located in Ohio and the other in Maine, with field adjusters available throughout all seven covered states. Field adjusters inspect property damage, while specific auto adjusters provide claims service for auto claims.

Ohio Mutual allows policyholders to provide feedback on their claims service through a claims survey found on the company’s website.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Ohio Mutual has been BBB accredited since 2010. They currently have an A+ rating with only 16 complaints registered in the past three years – five of which have been closed in the last 12 months. Those are very low numbers for a multi-state regional insurer.

There are a small number of reviews of the company throughout the internet, most of them negative, with complaints about poor or slow claims service being the main issue. However, positive reviews have also been posted and worth noting since positive reviews for insurance companies are somewhat rare.

Overall, there are a small number of complaints and nothing in the complaints that raises major concern. Ohio Mutual appears to have a fairly solid reputation.

Bottom Line

Without information on rates it is difficult to get a full picture of this insurance company, but they do offer a solid auto and homeowner’s program with some extra benefits and perks. With a good reputation and over 100 years of experience, Ohio Mutual is worth a look for those who prefer a small, local company and the personal service of an agent. For those in search of the best price on insurance, however, it’s likely that better rates will be found with large, national insurance companies such as Geico.

  1. I just had damage to my home from a bad pipe.

I was extremely impressed with the response I had from Ohio Mutual.

The adjuster was extremely professional and supportive.

He also gave me good advice on how to handle the potential problems I could have with a neighbor since the leak went into both of our condominiums.

He said to have them get a hold of him and he would see they would be handled appropriately and I wouldn’t have to worry about a conflict with this issue.

    Thank you Ohio Mutual

  2. I have been pleased with the savings realized when we switched from Liberty Mutual to Ohio Mutual for both our Homeowners and Auto policies.

Our broker representative is amazing, friendly and super responsive.

We now have better coverage, more coverage, and at huge savings over the rates we were paying to Liberty Mutual.

We recently had to file our first-ever homeowner claim, Ohio mutual cut the check and we had it in our hands in less than two weeks!

    Pretty amazing service.

I would recommend this company to anyone looking for Homeowners or Auto Insurance coverage.

  3. It has been 8 weeks since I filed a claim for water damage at our business. I have complied with everything they have asked. 2 weeks ago we tried to get some answers and we are still trying. Stay away from this insurance company.

  4. Our family lost everything in a fire just before the holidays last year, and Ohio Mutual has been an absolute nightmare to deal with. The unethical conduct is grossly blatant, and there have been so many issues that there isn’t room here to list them. They have done far more damage to my family than the tragedy of the original loss, and there is still no light at the end of the tunnel. We are disgusted, exhausted, and would steer anyone who sought an opinion far away from this company.

    • My Mother is in the same situation. We lost everything a week ago and this company has yet to send a adjuster out to the property..my mother is 85 and in poor health. She has been paying her premiums for over 25 years to this company, and they have giver her a list of things to complete which is practically impossible.. Then if they do pay off , you are only given 6 months to clean the property up and build your house back and be moved in…How is that possible in the winter time….Now I’m scared for my mother after reading all the reviews about this company which are all very bad…Maybe I should get a lawyer to handle the came..
