Acceptance Auto Insurance is a non-standard insurer specializing in high-risk drivers. Operating in 17 states, the company also offers renters insurance and motorcycle coverage among their products.

About Acceptance Auto Insurance

Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Acceptance Auto Insurance traces back to 1969. The company also operates under a few other names: First Acceptance, Yale Insurance, and Insurance Plus.

Acceptance operates throughout states in more than 350 retail storefronts. Their focus is on the non-standard, high-risk market, offering SR-22 coverage and insuring drivers that are unable to obtain coverage on the standard market for a variety of reasons.

Acceptance Auto also writes motorcycle and renters insurance and rounds out their product listing with hospital indemnity policies, something of an odd offering for this type of company.

Acceptance Products

Acceptance’s main product is non-standard auto insurance, though they have a few other products. In a practice that is common for this type of insurer, there is not much detail regarding their policies on their website. The product information is offered mainly as a general overview.

Auto Insurance

Acceptance’s auto program is offered to drivers who are in need of coverage but have been turned down elsewhere. This is usually due to a problematic driving record, including major violations that may result in an SR-22.

Acceptance also writes insurance for people with credit problems or who are considered high risk for other reasons. They offer a non-owners insurance program designed for those who need liability coverage but don’t own a vehicle.

While non-standard insurance typically focuses on liability coverage that meets state minimum requirements, Acceptance also offers comprehensive coverage and collision coverage, as well as a roadside assistance program that can be added to the policy.

Motorcycle Insurance

The motorcycle insurance program offers package policies, including the option to add roadside assistance. The site also indicates that they provide custom motorcycle coverage and have a program for military motorcycle insurance, although there is not a lot in regards to information as to what that means. The assumption would be that there is a military discount, but this is not made clear.

Renter’s Insurance

Acceptance writes renter’s insurance policies that cover liability and personal property for tenants.

While most insurers offer a discount when bundling auto and renters or home insurance together, we were unable to find information in regards to this on the Acceptance website, which has very little real information about the products.

Other Products

Also listed on the Acceptance website are Ohio bonds and Hospital Indemnity Insurance products.

The Hospital Indemnity coverage is not offered in Alabama and includes $125 a day for hospital confinement, $10,000 in accidental death and dismemberment coverage, and $1,000 in excess medical payments.

Rates

Acceptance does have online quoting, which requires entering personal information including a driver’s license number and social security number for an accurate quote. Quotes can also be obtained over the phone or by visiting a local agency.

Because Acceptance is a non-standard insurer, their rates are unlikely to compare well to standard insurance companies, and should only be compared with other non-standard insurance companies.

Claims

Acceptance has an online claims reporting system that can be used either by their own policyholders or by another driver involved in a collision with an Acceptance policyholder.

Claims can also be filed over the phone using a toll-free number; that line is not available 24/7, however. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Central time, and Saturdays 8:00 a.m. through 5:00 p.m. Central time. There are separate toll-free lines for towing coverage or rental car assistance.

The company’s website also offers an email address for claims, which is a less secure option but may be useful when sensitive information is not being sent.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) gives Acceptance an A+ rating, although there are 292 complaints on file in the past three years. Of those complaints, 65 were closed in the past 12 months. While the BBB may consider that a low enough volume to maintain the highest rating, in our experience that number is a little on the high side for a company of this size.

The company’s Facebook page has 75 reviews, resulting in an overall 2.3-star rating. The majority of the reviews are negative, with most focussing on the claims experience. Many complaints state that claims response is slow or non-existent, with filed claims being ignored for extended periods of time, in some cases weeks or months with no response. There are a few scattered positive reviews, but the overall impression is negative. The company does appear to take the time to respond to the negative reviews on the Facebook page, however, which shows interest in resolving complaints.

We found little else in the way of customer reviews and complaints. Yelp has two reviews for this company, one of which is a positive experience with taking out a new policy, the other negative but related to a fraud situation.

The Bottom Line

This company has enough negative reviews citing the same issues to give us pause. Non-standard insurance offering good service and a good value is a difficult thing to find, and further information on this company’s products and rates might help to determine what kind of value is offered. For those in need of this type of insurance, it would be a good idea to check out options beyond Acceptance before making a decision.

  2. I was an Acceptance customer until July 2019.

I authorized them to withdraw $198 per month from checking using a debit card for my monthly premiums I agreed to.

1 year later they increase my price to $328.24 PER MONTH WITH NO NOTICE.

I called to complained and was told I gave them permission to withdraw $ from my account.

The problem is they withdrew my heart med. $.

When I called to cancel I was given several different refund dates until finally was told because I haven’t proved I have another policy they can’t cancel me.

Since I canceled their ability to withdraw $ then and only then they can cancel me.

In otherwise they’re stealing. Now I’m hospitalized. Thay said they have no Administration.

I WISH DEATH ON ALL OF THEM AND THEIR WHOLE FAMILY!

  3. Went up in monthly payments with no notification. I canceled them.

This jerk guy who works at 8239 Pendleton Pike, Indianapolis, IN help me make my decision to cancel them.

Freida Payne who works at the same place has always been helpful.

I recommended several friends in the past, but every one of them didn’t like the guy attitude and he refused to let them or me speak with Freida.

He’s bad for business and increasing price with no notification and blaming it on computer glitches is illegal.

  4. Believe what you read.

BTW if you are requesting a reasonable blue book value (which they will not give) you do have recourse TAKE THEM TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT!!!!

ITS FAST, EASY AND YOU WILL WIN BUT IT HAS TO BE REASONABLE. TAKE ALL RESEARCH WITH YOU SHOWING FAIR MARKET VALUE.

My husband was hit by their insured. They took the rental car back after we had to fight to get one.

They took it back so we would have to take what they offered.

We will be going to court to let the Judge know what bind they have put us in and asking for wear and tear on our car as we are putting an extra 100 miles a day going between places of employment.

We have put 600 miles on our car to date and will be asking for .50 per mile in addition to the fair market value of our car.

  7. Acceptance should have zero out of five-star rating.
I was t-boned by a person insured under by these fraudsters. She was driving with an outstanding warrant AND revoked license and was arrested at the spot. Her car was left at the accident.

When my insurance company contacted them to initiate a claim we had to leave a VM for the adjuster. We leave the claim number etc, how to contact us.

Five phone calls later between me and my insurance company, we finally get him to answer. He tells us he’s never heard of the claim before, even though it had been 4 days since we had started leaving contact.

Throughout this entire process, the adjuster has been incredibly rude and incompetent, including blaming me for the accident and asking if I was hostile to their client… when I haven’t even spoken to her! And on the police report, it clearly says what happened.
It got to the point where we requested to speak to his supervisor, and it turns out the person we spoke to wasn’t even his supervisor and she had the same attitude with us.

Essentially they aren’t interested in helping you resolve the claim and let you know up front they aren’t going to help you.

They are also only in FL, so they won’t look at your car, it’s all through pictures.

THEY ARE A FRAUD. I FEEL SORRY FOR ANYONE WHO IS INSURED BY THEM, SO WHO IS IN AN ACCIDENT WHERE THE OTHER PARTY HAS THIS INSURANCE. You will receive no help, they will ghost you, and they will be very rude and unprofessional the entire time.

    • If anyone is driving without a license, how does that reflect on an insurance company? Also Florida is what is called a NO FAULT state and according to the information above, I would love to know how they are “Only in FL”

Hmmm I do not find much credence in your review.

      • What she is saying is true..when I got off the phone with the adjuster I was in tears.

she was condescending and spoke to me like it was my fault.

Also threatened to close out my claim.

The adjuster stated due to not being able to get their insured on the phone to get their side of the incident there is nothing they can do with my claim.

Even though there was a detailed police report.

At this point, I’m just going to chuck this as a loss.

        • Hi Jessica:

I understand your frustration but DO NOT give up on your claim because that is what they want you to do!!

If they won’t answer, send them a certified letter in writing.

If they won’t respond to that, gather all of your evidence and sue them in court.

They will answer at that point or you will get a Judgment against them because they ignored the claim.

If you aren’t working with a lawyer, I would advise you to at least seek out a free consultation as to what claims/actions they would take in your case.

It only costs you about an hour of your time.

DO NOT GIVE UP!! GOOD LUCK!

    • What she is saying is completely true. My husband was recently hit by one of their customers. It totaled our car.

Here it is over A MONTH LATE AND STILL NO RENTAL CAR OR CHECK.

We were informed by their extremely rude agent that they not only DO NOT GIVE THE BLUE BOOK VALUE they decide what your car is worth.

They NEVER return calls, that is why it is over a month later and we are still waiting.

ANYONE CAN GO TO THEIR SMALL CLAIMS COURT AND FILE A BAD FAITH CLAIM AGAINST THIS COMPANY IT IS QUICK AND EASY TO DO.

I will be filing one very soon if this is not resolved.

IF YOU ARE INSURED BY THEM KNOW THIS YOU CAN BE SUED FOR WHAT THEY ARE NOT WILLING TO PAY FOR AT A FAIR PRICE.

IS IT WORTH PAYING THEM TO BE SUED?

      Reply
    • If you are hit by their customer, they will not give fair market value.

However, you do NOT have to accept their offer.

If you do the research and make a fair counteroffer, if they reject it, you can TAKE THEM TO SMALL CLAIMS COURT.

It’s EASY AND FAST. We will be doing just that.

Their agents are condescending and rude.

Don’t waste your time, waste theirs, file a small claims “Bad Faith” action against them.

  9. My vintage BMW was rear-ended and totaled on March 22, 2018. On August 31, Acceptance Insurance, who insured the other driver; sent a letter denying the claim. My attorney advises me that most insurance companies deny claims in a few days. These people have taken 5 months. Customer service is nonexistent. I am in the process of suing the driver (who may not even still be in the state of Georgia by now) and writing the Secretary of State, Brian Kemp to run these fraudulent [Redacted] out of Georgia.

    • My daughter was hit by a driver (insured by Acceptance) while she was riding her bicycle – she was hurt pretty badly and back surgery has been recommended. The driver of the auto, after giving his drivers license and insurance card (with Acceptance) fled the scene immediately thereafter. He only had the bare minimum, liability, coverage in the state of Texas. We have not been able to find one attorney in Austin that will accept my daughter’s (slam dunk case). The moment they learn that the insurer is, Acceptance – they demur. All 5 attorneys say the same thing: “Even for 50% fee – of the $30,000 maximum that the driver has – we do not want to mess with Acceptance Insurance. It’s just not worth it.” Wow, that takes my breath away. BTW, if the insured driver had $500,000 in liability coverage, these attorneys would take the case. We are at our wits end.

  10. The comments on here are extremely ignorant due to lack of knowledge. One complaint was because the company would not pay out 50k for a 06 chev trailblazer. Read your policy handbook, most insurance companies pay out the value of the vehicle with standard equipment (which it rolled out of the factory with). If you wanted coverage for all your stereos and such you should have purchased special equipment coverage. Another complaint was Acceptance was only going to pay out 10k because that was the client’s liability limits. In case you forgot, the client chooses their limits of liability and in many states, 10k is the minimum. These are stupid arguments.

  12. Please do not use this insurance company. I had problems since day one with them. I got them in January, and two weeks later my license was suspended. I couldn’t find out why until I called the company and they said they dropped my insurance due to not being enrolled in auto pay. They never asked me to enroll, never called, never sent an email warning me, nor anything on my policy page. Finally I set up auto pay, a week later they charge me for a double portion of insurance to stay covered before they dropped me again. A month later, no auto pay was taken out. I had to call and pay. Fast forward to May 6th, someone totals out my car. I go through acceptance insurance and OH MY LORD. They told me they weren’t touching my vehicle at all until I paid them $1,000 out of my own pocket and that I should use the other guy’s insurance. If not, they’ll come tow my car down by Miami. I told them no thank you I’ll have the other guys insurance handle it. Well for three days I have a towing company calling trying to come get my vehicle!!! Finally they canceled it. The other guys insurance was giving problems so I went back to my claim with acceptance. I found out the $1,000 deductible comes from my settlement and not up front. They told me they don’t offer rental car assistance. I asked for an adjuster to come out to get this going, and he told me they don’t do that and I can just send in pictures myself. I told him no, I need an adjuster out here. So he gave me a number to call to set it up (instead of them doing it themselves). It took 6 days getting them out here. Finally they tell me it’s a total loss and they’ll have someone come pick it up and bring it to Alabama. (I don’t know why???) and he transferred the case to a total loss adjuster saying she would contact me by Monday. (It was a Friday) lo and behold two weeks later after they’ve gotten my car they will not return any of my calls or messages or tell me what’s going on. They literally just took my car and then dropped me. I’ve never felt so frustrated. This company treats you like you’re an enemy and they scam the [redacted] out of you. Please beware!!!

  13. I see why there’s so many negative comments, and please believe them. I received better service at a fast food restaurant. My issue is the fact I filed a comprehensive service claim and the adjuster I was assigned never called me, even when clearly he stated all calls will be returned within 24hrs on his voicemail. Secondly, even after I finally got in contact with him, he didn’t remember the previous conversation about my claim, and he didn’t show concern about my vehicle and the fact I’ve been without a vehicle for almost a week. Lastly, my vehicle is available for pick up, but since he didn’t do his job on Tuesday when the claim was created, I’ll have to be without a vehicle for another week. I’ve already accumulated hundreds in Uber charges. Do not I repeat do not get this insurance unless you like being treated like another number. I’m very upset, and unsatisfied.

  15. Worst company ever, I would not recommend them to anyone. You get into an accident and it doesn’t matter if you have insurance with them or the person that was at fault had insurance with them, they still make you feel like you’re below them and do not return phone calls to anyone. They don’t want to pay you what you’re owed and screw you over on getting a rental and only want to give you a lousy $20 a day for every day you’re without a vehicle. But want to make you come out of pocket $50 deposit for a rental, and on top of that, you have to pay an additional however much the rental company charges you to get a rental that is big enough for your family. Plus you have to pay insurance on the rental every day which is $25 a day. You pay more for a rental than they’re willing to pay you for every day being without a vehicle, something’s not right there

  16. Acceptance is the worse auto insurance company I’ve dealt with, starting with the Agent who gave us [redacted] rental insurance and the claim rep, [Redacted] who doesn’t want to do her job. She picks up the phone and hangs up, she lies and says she called when she didn’t. She never got the police report, I had to get it on my own. And top of that, her supervisor, [Redacted], never called back either. I was told that’s what happens when you deal with the small insurance companies.

  17. Everyone of the complaints are undeniably true. It’s been a year since I was struck by a driver insured by Acceptance. Fortunately I had full coverage thru my insurance co. and chose to file claims via my coverage. However, I had a trailer in tow when the accident occurred and the damages to my trailer were not covered by my full coverage and a separate claim was filed thru Acceptance. It’s been a year since the accident and I have encountered far too many issues to mention. I still have not been for my claim. My experience with them has been horrible and will never recommend them to anyone, not even an enemy. By the way, their driver was drunk and arrested, so they were obligated to pay. Their pay out limit is ten thousand. My vehicle was was 16k alone, so no matter what, they are going to stick someone with damages caused by their driver. Run as far away from this company as you can!

This company should get a BBB rating – BAD, BAD, BAD………..My daughter is going through all the above, lying, more than three months since the accident, saying she did not have hospital coverage and has to pay $5000+, said they sent wrong paperwork, now has to wait another two weeks…she is not holding her breath, but getting an attorney. This company should be barred from selling car insurance of any kind.

I have NEVER had customer service as sorry as this company. I am going on two months after the accident and I still have not been paid for my car. I was also told by [Redacted] (Total Loss Adjuster with the company)said, “You ARE LUCKY I ALLOWED YOU AN EXTRA WEEK OF RENTAL CAR.” I only had two weeks of a rental car (and over 7 weeks dealing with them… so far) and he told me I should have been looking and purchased a vehicle already. Even though they have not paid me for my vehicle. The first few weeks, no one would return my phone calls. [Redacted] never returns calls either. In the meantime, they are hanging on to the money they owe me. SORRY COMPANY

  20. I was with Acceptance Insurance since the day I first got my car. As of yesterday and forever, I do not want nothing to do with this insurance company. My rate went from $204.00 to $238.00 without warning or notice. When I called to question the new price, I was given a very vague explanation that Texans in my area were hit with an increased rate. WHY? No ‘why’ was given. Had I known that I could have changed my insurance right there and then, I would haven’t paid it. So, I’m going through the process of getting my money back so I can purchase another insurance. Of course…there’s a huge runaround happening. I have to prove that I am with another provider. Yeah, I’ll prove it once I get that money back.

SIGH….easy to go up on rates without explanation, but long division to request a refund for shady practices. Never again.

    • There is NO requirement for you to prove anything. Your obligation for proof of insurance is to the state no Acceptance. They are violating the law by not allowing you to cancel a policy. They consistently verbally bully their customers but will not put anything in writing because they are like debt collectors. They violate rules and usually get away with it. They tried that with me until they realized I was well informed. Go as fast as you can to progressive or Allstate and cancel payments with them. You will never see your money unless you have weeks of time on your hands. They owed me and has the nerve to send a bill.

I submitted all the paperwork to the Acceptance adjuster and they called me with a settlement for the amount of 5300.00 dollars. When I refused to accept it, they said it was their final offer. My son called and got insurance and called back in less than 30 minutes told them he did not need car insurance and to cancel the policy but they still charged the card after she told him it would take 7 to 10 business days before they could return the monies. Now it seems as if the adjuster has disappeared off the face of the earth. I get the run around everytime I call and they say even if he cancelled the same day because he gave the card information it is an agreement for payment. The car has not been operable in over a year. There needs to be something I can do but unfortunately these are the practices of this company. Neeeevvveeerrr deal with this company.

  26. This company is terrible. I have had Geico for years but got canceled when my credit card payment didn’t go through due to an account hack. I needed insurance coverage right away when I found out rather than wait. I signed up, paid first payment. I enrolled in auto pay, on May 17 they withdrew payment, no problem. On June 15th I got repeated calls and when I finally picked up it was Acceptance. They were calling to inform me my payment was due the next day. I said ” well I’m in auto pay right so..” He confirmed it , but something was fishy. So I checked my BOA app to see if it was processing. Didn’t see it. I called acceptance and boa everyday until the 19th. Acceptance told me they withdrew the payment but I kept explaining I and my bank didn’t see the request or withdraw. I had meeting I had to fly into for the next three days but acceptance assured me everything was ok. Friday while in the airport I checked my account again and still no withdraw. Call acceptance they told me we were canceled the past 5 days!!! I freaked. No accidents,no tickets for over 17 years and certainly no lapses of insurance. They said it was returned NSF!!! I have plenty in the account so this was impossible. Called BOA and they were positive they never tried to withdraw. They scammed me for $110 extra dollars to reinstate me. Then came up with all kinds of hair rained ideas of what happened. It was like talking to a kindergartner.
When I proved my account balance would cover everything by emailing them screenshots showing the balances they said oh well maybe you gave us the wrong card. The card was on file with them for autopay. They used it on the April Payment, the first autopay payment, and even on the reinstatement payment. I tried to ask how it worked for all the payments except the one they never sent to my bank. They waived the fee. Then put it right back on for this months payment! Total idiots. If they can’t understand this simple problem they cant have my business. I got progressive and canceled. Unless you’re unemployed don’t take on the full time job of managing these idiots.

  27. Before my policy starts I’m backing out. These reviews seem to be kind of true and don’t let me forget I’m paying almost 200 bucks for liability insurance I wasn’t thinking but I know now.

    • LMAO!!! Same here… this is by far THE WORST insurance company EVER!!! No one wants to help, give clear and precise answers or especially handle a claim in a time appropriate way. They sure do want your money, have their agents calling you more than once a day reminding you that your payment is due. But, once it’s their turn to answer the phone in your time of need… DON’T HOLD YOUR BREATH or count on it. The moment you need their services as a PAYING CUSTOMER… they turn on you and no one knows anything. They avoid all phone calls, put you on hold knowing they’re not gonna transfer you to anyone.. voicemails NEVER get a return phone call. By the time I did receive one back, it wasn’t even by the person, or persons SUPERVISOR that I already left a voicemail with also. They treat you like YOU committed a crime, insult you are very rude… expect you to do all their foot work AND send you for a DEPOSITION… I can go on and on with everyone’s name that has let us down. Then this woman just called that I never contacted telling me about some other papers being mailed when I already finally talked to someone yesterday and kinda actually got somewhere this time. So, it’s obvious these people are not professionals by any means… do not communicate with each other at ALL and do not leave notes about anything. This place makes you feel like you’re on some type of show just waiting to find out it was all an act, you know like a big joke being played on you… but, unfortunately it never ends, no one ever comes out with a camera crew for some type of relief… it really is a big joke on YOU. Run if you have a chance!! Save yourself the mental anguish these people cause. This is coming from someone who in 41 yrs has never had ONE claim or accident and I was treated that poorly…

  30. Acceptance insurance is terrible! Worst company ever! If ever in an accident from one of their clients expect the worst treatment ever. Lengthy delays on service (appraiser, adjuster), place all the time on the person hit by their client. Rude and argumentative customer service from adjuster especially. I asked for the CEO email so I could send to him/her directly my complaints. Was told sorry they couldn’t provide that info.

  31. I agree this is by far the worsed insurance company ever. The agent we are speaking of will not listen or help. They have put a hold on my license and I don’t even have insurance eoth thier company. The guy who has insurance with this company filed a fraudulent claim and it’s affecting my life in every way possible. The BBB should investigate thier company for fraud and other bad business practices. Oh, and they have threatened us with a letter as well.

  32. THIS IS THE WORST INSURANCE COMPANY EVER!!!!! NOT ONLY DO THEY GIVE YOU THE RUN AROUND BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT TO HELP, THEY ARE INCONSIDERATE. THE MANAGERS DON’T RETURN PHONE CALLS AND NEITHER DO THE INSURANCE ADJUSTERS. GOOD LUCK TRYING TO GET ANY ASSISTANCE OR A RENTAL VEHICLE OR ANYTHING ELSE YOU MAY NEED FROM THIS COMPANY!

    • UNFORTUNATELY, I AM DEALING WITH THIS COMPANY AND I AGREE WITH YOU. I CAN’T GET A RENTAL, DON’T KNOW WHERE THEY TOWED MY CAR AFTER THEY REMOVED IT FROM THE LOT WHERE I HAD IT TOWED, THE ADJUSTER [Redacted] WON’T CALL ME AND I SPOKE WITH HIS SUPERVISOR [Redacted] WHO IS WORSE THAN [Redacted]. I CANNOT GO ANYWHERE WITHOUT ASKING FOR A RIDE FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY. TO MAKE MATTERS WORSE WHEN I DID FINALLY SPEAK WITH [Redacted] AND [Redacted], THEY BOTH LAUGHED WHEN I WAS EXPLAINING MY PAINFUL EXPERIENCE WITH THEIR COMPANY. I REALLY FEEL INSULTED AND FRUSTRATED. I WOULD NEVER EVER BUY A POLICY FROM THEM OR RECOMMEND THEM. THERE ARE A LOT NEGATIVE COMMENTS I COULD MAKE BUT I THINK THIS IS ENOUGH FOR POTENTIAL CUSTOMERS TO GET AN IDEA OF HOW HORRIBLE THIS COMPANY TREAT PEOPLE. I DON’T KNOW HOW THEY SLEEP AT NIGHT.

  33. This is by far the WORST insurance company I have ever heard of. I have worked in the insurance industry for 36 years and never ever have I dealt with a company so unresponsive to their insureds. My family reported a claim on 8/25/15 today is 10/21/15 and the claim still has not been settled. I truly wish that people could understand that these companies that advertise “cheap premiums” will not only be a rip off when you have a claim but their premiums are not really any less anyway. For instance this policy that I am talking about cost 170.00 per month for low limits of liability and NO rental car or towing coverage. The same policy quoted through Travelers cost 76.00 per month and has rental and towing included in the premium. In case you are wondering I do not work for Travelers. Any of you major players can match this. Do your homework. There are also rules to claims handling that they pay no attention to. My next step is to file a Department of Insurance complaint. If that does not get them moving on this claim we will look at bad faith.
