About Bolt

Bolt was founded in Farmington, Connecticut and has its headquarters there to this day. They began with the goal of making it easier for small businesses to shop for, compare, and select insurance and have since moved on to provide the same service to individuals.

As an agency, Bolt does not actually write any insurance policies. Their quoting platform allows consumers to research and access rates from a variety of top rated insurers. The list of partner companies includes big names like Hiscox, Chubb, Progressive, Foremost, Travelers, The Hartford, and Liberty Mutual.

Unlike traditional insurance agencies, Bolt does not have storefronts or offices but has licensed agents in 50 states available to assist with insurance questions and quotes. Quotes are offered online or over the phone.

Bolt Products

Bolt works with insurance companies across the country to offer a full range of product quotes. While they remain focused on business insurance, they also provide quotes for auto insurance, home insurance, and specialty insurance. They do not currently offer life insurance quotes.

Business Insurance

Bolt’s original business model involved making it easier to purchase small business insurance, and they still have a large focus in this area.

Business insurance is available for a wide range of company types, including professional services, home-based businesses, retail, wholesale, food service, non-profits, IT services, and more.

Business insurance offerings range from state to state, with products currently not available through Bolt in Virginia and West Virginia. The agency provides comparison quotes for the following products:

Personal Insurance

Bolt’s agency platform allows quoting of multiple lines of personal insurance, including assistance with bundling insurance together to obtain discounts.

Bolt offers quotes for auto, motorcycle, RV, boat, and other specialty vehicles. They also offer quotes for home, renters, and other property policies. Additionally, quotes can be obtained for pet insurance, flood and earthquake coverage, and umbrella.

The choice of companies for each of these products will vary based on the state as well as the type of policy. Not all insurance companies write all of these products, so bundling will only be offered by certain companies.

Bolt’s entire platform is based on making obtaining quotes easy. Since they are an agency that provides comparison quotes for a variety of different insurance companies, we are unable to offer comparison quotes. The rates offered will depend on the companies from which they are obtained.

There is no indication that rates quoted through Bolt will be any cheaper than those offered by the company directly; instead, the company offers agent advice on what type of policy the consumer needs followed by quotes from companies that provide this coverage.


As an agency, Bolt does not handle claims. All claims, regardless of the product, are handled through the insurance company directly, therefore the claims experience will vary.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Bolt Insurance has a Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating of A+ with only two complaints on file in the past three years, none of which were closed in the past 12 months. There is just one negative review that refers to slow response time from customer service.

Bolt’s Yelp page has six reviews, four of which are positive, and two are negative. It is very unusual to see more positive than negative reviews for any company in this industry, so this is encouraging.

There is little in the way of reviews available for this company. It is important to remember that as an agency, the company will help you purchase insurance but does not actually service the policies. Reading reviews, many of which can be found on our website, for the individual insurance companies as well as the agency before you decide to purchase a policy would be our best suggestion to assist in making a decision.

The Bottom Line

Bolt appears to have a good reputation for helping people find the right insurance, particularly in the business insurance market. They work with some of the bigger names in both personal and commercial lines and offer their services in most parts of the country. For those seeking an alternative to traditional agencies but still seeking agent assistance with purchasing insurance, they are likely to be a good choice.

  1. I have had business liability coverage thru this company for a number of years and they have the worst customer experience of any insurance organization I have ever dealt with. It’s like they just don’t care.

    I purchased a business liability policy from Bolt Insurance on April 23, 2018. In May I canceled the policy due to a lack of service. I could not get a certificate of insurance in a timely manner and as a result, lost a lot of business. ($10,000). I paid for the policy in full. Now I cannot get a response from ANYONE except TAPCO. But they cannot really help because they sent the refund check to BOLT on June 13. BOLT is not responding to my repeated requests. I cannot move forward because my money is tied up with BOLT. I don’t think they will refund my money. Please help.

  3. Bolt insurance should be named dolt insurance. I have been in business for 47 years and have had insurance for most of that time. This company is by far the worst. I bought the policy in April 2018 and it took over a month to get the policy. I called with the policy number on the document and they don’t use that number. They assign their own number and you cannot find that anywhere in the doc. It took over a month to get a quote for additional insurance because they truly did not know what that was. When I finally got a response they quoted me what it cost for the entire policy. So now the premium is doubled. For each additional insured, that same amount was added. So for 2 additional insured the premium tripled. I promptly canceled and as of this date (6/14/2018) I still don’t have the refund. As a result of this, I have lost over 2 months of business that I will not be able to recover. Stupid.

  4. Bolt insurance company is HORRIBLE. THEY HAVE COST THOUSANDS! Customer service is a joke. Stay away. We have paid for their sloppy mistakes. It is sad that a company like this is still in business.
