Windhaven Insurance provides auto coverage to drivers in Florida and Texas. The company focuses on personal auto for both standard and non-standard drivers, with what they call a “risk tolerant” approach to underwriting.

Windhaven Insurance Summary

Windhaven Insurances traces its roots back to 1990 when the company was founded in Dallas, Texas. After a time during which they did not offer coverage in Texas, only in Florida, Windhaven has recently started offering policies in their home state again.

Windhaven writes only personal auto insurance and offers coverage for both standard and non-standard drivers. They are a small regional insurance company that has seen a lot of growth in recent years, but currently shows no signs of expanding into other states.

Windhaven products are sold only through local agents, but the company recently introduced the Clutch Insurance program, which allows drivers to purchase a policy online, then directing them to an agent who will service the policy.

Independent agents can also set up their agency with a website so that they can offer their customers the option to purchase Windhaven products online. This is a fairly unusual approach and places Windhaven ahead of many similar companies in terms of use of technology and availability of online quoting and purchasing.

Windhaven further makes use of technology with a mobile app available that allows customers to manage their account directly from a smartphone.

The Windhaven website provides no information on the available auto coverage. Instead, the website directs visitors to find a local agent with whom to discuss coverage, or to use one of the two online options – an agent website or the Clutch Insurance site – to get a quote.

Based on Windhaven’s market position, their auto insurance program is likely fairly basic. This type of regional insurer, particularly one that sells in the non-standard market, generally offers liability-only policies to help high-risk drivers obtain the legal minimums for insurance. They also offer basic full coverage policies, but rarely have much in the way of add-ons or special options.

Without any sort of outline of coverage on the website, it’s very difficult to determine how Windhaven’s products line up with other similar insurance companies. For a company that seems very focused on utilizing the internet to reach customers and make the insurance purchasing experience easier, it is very surprising to see that they have not provided any product information.

As a non-standard insurer, Windhaven is not likely to be the most affordable insurance option for most people. Insurance companies that are willing to write policies for high-risk drivers generally protect themselves by charging higher rates all around, which means that even a driver with a clean record will likely find them more expensive than other options.

Non-standard insurers rate on a different playing field, so those who are in need of that kind of coverage will do best by comparing the rates of several non-standard companies.

As with any insurance company, your mileage may vary. It is important to get a personalized quote since every organization uses their own underwriting guidelines to determine rates.


Windhaven offers several options for claims reporting. The company’s claims department is open every day of the week from 8:00 am to 8 pm Eastern Time. To report a claim to a representative during these hours call (866) 595-4080, or for information regarding an existing claim, the websites instructscustomerss to call (800) 919-9114.

Windhaven’s mobile app, which is available for iPhone and Android, also has a claims reporting option. The app allows the customer to report a claim from their smartphone and also take and upload pictures of the damage directly through the app.

When it comes to claims, Windhaven provides a lot more information about the process than they do about their products.

Their claims process follows a five-step system:

  2. Reporting of the claim
  3. Review of the evidence and policy coverage
  4. Estimating of damages
  5. Payment of the final settlement

The company promises response time within 24 from a claims adjuster in most cases, depending mainly on where the insured lives.

Windhaven has a Direct Repair network where estimates and repairs can be done quickly in direct cooperation with the insurance company. While the policyholder can choose their own repair shop, repairs done within the network are guaranteed.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Windhaven has a B+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) as of the time of this review. The BBB records 361 complaints against the company in the past three years, with 105 of those closed in the past 12 months. The company’s rating has been lowered by the BBB because they have failed to the underlying cause(s) of the complaints.

While the BBB considers this number of complaints acceptable for a company of this size, it’s actually quite a large number, and that bears out what the many reviews and complaints about the company have to say.

Google reviews give the company three out of five stars. Reviews cite refusal to pay claims, slow service, inability to contact representatives, and claims being ignored and denied. There are reviews from both Windhaven’s own customers and those who were involved in an accident with a Windhaven-insured driver, and all point to the same problem.

A quick search for reviews of the company even reveals a local news story where a Windhaven customer had to bring in the media’s “Consumer Watchdog” team to get the company to pay for the damage to her vehicle.

Overall, the portrait that emerges of Windhaven’s reputation isn’t a pretty one.

  1. Not happy with this company at all!! I have been trying for over a month to get a hold of someone since they updated their app, I have not been able to sign in. I called the first time and tech support couldn’t figure it out and placed me on hold. I never got a hold of anyone since then and I still can’t sign in. I’m going to start looking for a new company after seeing all the complaints online and through Google. Wish I would’ve known this before choosing them.

  2. So I paid on May 14 my down payment. On June 3 they wanted another payment, which okay whatever, but then I go and check my account today and my [redacted] canceled! It’s not even the third heeelllpppp!.

  3. Terrible company!!!!!!!!! Can’t even get anyone on the [redacted] phone.

  4. Windhaven does not have 24-hour claims. I could not get treated until the next day because my accident was after their business hours.

    I can’t speak for others, but being an accident victim from one of their insured, they do not take very good care of you. I got rear-ended by one of their insured.
    Here is my experience:

    1) When I sought medical care, they allegedly denied it because the “damage to my car was less than $500”

    2) The estimated amount was less than the actual cost to repair the damage.

    3) Their instructions on how to proceed were very vague. You could not deal with just 1 person and I did not know the next step or who to send what to.

    4) The adjuster’s instructions were to rent a car when mine was being repaired and that I would be reimbursed. No clear direction on where to rent or amount allowed. They did not reimburse the full amount I was charged. When I called the Insurance Commissioner, they said it was my fault because I did not negotiate that amount.

    Beware! Do not trust that you will get taken care of like you should. Get everything documented.

    5) They are not available after business hours. My accident did not happen during business hours, so I had to wait until business hours to get a claim number to seek treatment.

    6) At least one of their own representatives I talked to does not even have the insurance with Windhaven. In a conversation with him, he said he has Allstate. Gives you a lot of confidence, doesn’t it….?

  5. This is the absolute worse company ever. I signed up for a policy back in Nov of 2018 with automatic payments. On Dec 28, 2018, I got a letter from the DMV saying my license and tag was suspended because my insurance was canceled. I called Windhaven and they informed me that it wasn’t (they had already taken the payment from my account for that month). When I explained to the rep what the DMV said he then came back and told me that they had no policy in my name at all and that I would have to pay a deposit and get insurance. This company is unprofessional please do not do business with them because they refused to correct their error that was their fault it cost me over $500.00 to get my DL and tag back.

    Dont waste your time, Your money, Your energy dont do it.

    • I was in an accident and was not at fault. I am being told I have to surrender my vehicle, which Windhaven says is a total loss yet Honda says it’s not, and any money goes to the lender . If I keep the car to repair, my repair money also goes to the lender and I have to repair the car out of pocket. They DO NOT PROTECT THE INSURED, they are looking out for the guy who hit you and the lender. They are crooks, DON’T GET COVERAGE WITH THEM.


    I was with Windhaven for 1 year and I regret it. I was involved in an accident for which I was not at fault for and I was out of a car for 2 months while Windhaven “fixed” it. The whole time, I had to call the adjuster to send the inspector and give him deadlines just to have the car fixed faster. Also, I had full coverage and was not even offered a rental car to get to and from school and work. I was also required to pay all out-of-pocket costs for the accident. Regardless of not being the one at fault of the accident, my premium skyrocketed and that is why I am SO proud to have cancelled my Windhaven policy. THIS IS THE WORST COMPANY EVER. You call their 1-800 number and they don’t even have a customer service department. When you do get a hold of a human being, it’s the wrong department and they have the nastiest attitudes.

  8. Paid my new policy with Winhaven on the 25th of January 2017 I received a letter in the mail on Saturday February 4th saying my policy has been canceled since January 25th. But the agent take me money on the 25th of January all 3 of my car are Financed. So know I can’t go to work go to my agent office on Monday either my agent reinstate
    policy or give my down payment back .

  9. Is there anyway to contact a lawyer willing to do a class action suit against this insurance company,they are terrible and fraudulent.

    • Count me in. They refuse to fix my car after I got hit by a driver whof had coverage with them, same thing with my dad’s car. They never repaired his car after it was hit by one of their policy holders.

      • Please let me know if you find a lawyer same thing happened to me they said they driver was liable and sent me a check for the repairs. Now they are stating that they are not and I already cashed the check and they said they are going to issue a stop payment. WTH!

        • They did finally pay me but it was only half the value of my car. Since my car was older and actually still repairable I bought it back from them and repaired it myself. They did take their dear sweet time on the whole thing.

    • Please let me know because I would join in the lawsuit. A Windhaven insured driver totaled my parked car and Windhaven only wants to give me half the value of my car!! How is this even legal to do this??!!!

    got into a car accident in December 2015 NOT MY FAULT.

    i hurt my right knee in the accident, My girlfriend had injuries to, We wen for treatment and they didnt pay for our treatment because, Took weeks to get answers and they just keap coming up with different excuses. next thing you know i check my mail and have 2 refund checks from them they drop me and refund me alllll my money i paid them..

    Dont get windhaven wa ever you do… better off with Geico paying less with them now anyways.

  14. Horrible company. Called the state of Florida to file complaint. Even the state said they are horrible. I backed into a relatives car and busted his headlight and dented fender. The estimate was $1600. First they said there was a problem with my ins. Application, they said I didn’t list my dad on policy. I don’t even live with my dad. So after that didn’t work for them. They finally sent me a check for $400. No one will fix the car for that. Why $400 and not even close to estimate price. I have been dealing with this since April 8th. I have called adjuster 20 times with not one call back. Ins commision is giving them 20 days to respond

  15. Worthless company!! Got into an accident they took my money for 3 years and now they tried to tell me my application had missing information and they have to deny me!! Wish i knew an attorney to sue them asap!!

  16. Windhaven sucks [Redacted]! Filed numerous complaints with government agencies in order to even hear from them. Moving forward with hiring an attorney to expedite my claim. DO NOT USE WINDHAVEN INSURANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Stay away from this pathetic insurance company!! Got in a accident not my fault. I’m injured and now they don’t want to pay and conveniently cancelled me way back sent me a check for not even total amount paid out in policy. They have caused me a lot of stress and unnecessary running around!! I’m gonna sue the [Redacted] out of them!!!

    • Hey do you have the contact info for that attorney I’ve been looking for one For me. I crashed 8/30/2015 and still having issues with this company. I spoke to the adjuster for the first time yesterday. Wow
