About Indiana Farmers Mutual
Indiana Farmers Mutual has a history much like many similar companies; it was founded to protect local farmers in 1877. The company expanded into auto insurance, home insurance, and business insurance over the years, and now serves the entire state from its headquarters in Indianapolis. The company has announced plans to expand into Illinois in 2019, marking their first excursion beyond their home state.
Indiana Farmers still operates as a mutual insurance company, meaning it is not owned by shareholders but by the policyholders.
Indiana Farmers Mutual has a very famous mascot in Garfield the cat; the orange feline (who calls Indiana home as well) became a part of their marketing in 2013 and is used in print and television commercials. The move was made to help the company stand out from the many insurers with similar names. In 2015 Indiana Farmers Mutual signed a deal for the naming rights to the Indiana State Fair Coliseum.
Personal auto and commercial insurance products are sold through independent agents across the state.
Indiana Farmers Mutual Products
There are four main lines of business offered by Indiana Farmers Mutual. These are auto, home, business, and of course farm insurance – their original product.
The Indiana Farmers Mutual auto program offers all of the basics along with some common add-on options. These include new car replacement, gap insurance, roadside assistance, and rental car coverage.
There are a variety of discounts available as well, including a safe driver discount, good student discount for drivers with a B average or above, and multi-policy discounts across all of Indiana Farmers’ product lines.
Like the auto program, Indiana Farmers Mutual offers a standard home insurance program that covers the structure, personal property, and liability. This basic policy can be customized with options that include water & sewer backup, refrigerated goods coverage, lock and garage door replacement, and false alarm response fees.
Indiana Farmers also has a good list of discounts on their home insurance policies, including bundling of home and auto, claim-free, loyalty, new home, and discounts for those over 50 and empty nesters as well.
In addition to homeowner’s insurance, Indiana Farmers has policies for renters as well.
There is a solid range of business insurance products available from Indiana Farmers that can cover just about any need. These include:
- Business owners package policy
- Commercial auto
- Commercial package policy
- Workers Compensation
- Inland Marine
- Commercial Umbrella
- Individual business property and liability
Products can be customized with options specific to the business type, including specialized liability coverage.
The farm insurance program is as comprehensive as we would expect from a company created to serve farmers.
The program covers the farm’s home – with a discount for new homes – as well as farm operations including equipment, livestock, and more. Each policy can be customized to provide the right coverage for the type and size of the farm being insured.
There is a discount available to hobby farms, and the farm policy can also be bundled with auto to get a lower rate.
It is surprising to see for a smaller, regional company, an online quoting system is provided. Quotes are offered through Hughes Insurance Group, a local insurance agency that partners with Indiana Farmers.
Although they only cover Indiana and are thus not comparable to our usual sample rates, we attempted to run a quote. After going through the entire system and entering sample information, the quoting system returned an error message and we were unable to obtain a rate.
It is unclear whether this was due to the information we entered or an error within the system itself. We were instructed to contact an agent for further assistance. The end result is that we are unable to provide a sample rate for this company at the time of this review.
Indiana Farmers Mutual has a solid claims center page that provides all of the information needed to get a claim started for any of the policies.
Claims can be reported online through a simple claims form located right on the main claims page.
There is also a list of phone numbers – for emergency claims, auto glass claims, and regular non-emergency claims.
In addition to phone and online, a mailing address for filing a claim is also listed, and the claim forms can be downloaded from the same page.
The claim center page itself does not list any information with regards to the claims process or what can be expected; the FAQ section of the site, however, does answer a few basic questions. We were unable to find any indication that the company uses a preferred repair network on either page.

Overall the impression is of a friendly and helpful company; they take the time to respond to the reviews both positive and negative.
We did not find reviews of this company on any of the other common sites; overall the volume of complaints is low and we are left with a positive impression.
The Bottom Line
If you live in Indiana and have relatively straightforward insurance needs, Indiana Farmers Mutual may be a good pick. We weren’t able to check out their rates, but everything else about this company makes them appear worth the effort to get a quote. Their reputation is sold and they’ve been around a long time; if you like working with an agent and want to check out alternatives to the big, national insurance companies, put them on your list.
