Virginia insurer Northern Neck is a homegrown property & casualty insurance company serving only their home state. They write basic personal insurance policies including auto insurance and home insurance.

About Northern Neck

Like many local insurers, Northern Neck has its roots in a small group of community members coming together to create a protective mutual association against losses due to fire. Northern Neck Mutual Fire Association was created in 1896 in Irvington, Virginia.

Although still a mutual company, in 1987 the name was changed to Northern Neck Insurance Company, which now serves the entire state of Virginia. The company made the decision to remain a Virginia-only insurance company and focus on products in that state alone.

Policies include personal auto, homeowners, and other home policies including a rural estate option. They are sold through independent agents across the state.

Northern Neck Products

Northern Neck focuses on basic personal insurance needs, offering auto and home insurance as well as personal umbrella insurance. The company website offers very little information on their products, instead directing visitors to contact an agent for assistance.

Auto Insurance

The Northern Neck website does not give much information at all on their auto insurance policy. The only specific coverage that is mentioned is their emergency roadside assistance program which is included at no extra premium on all auto insurance policies and provides coverage of up to $75 per incident.

The section on auto insurance does state that they have coverage for “responsible drivers”, which indicates that they are probably a preferred risk insurer and may not be a good choice if you have a less than perfect driving record.

Home Insurance

There is a little more information for the Northern Neck home insurance policy. The site states that they offer 100% replacement cost on their policies as well as earthquake and sinkhole coverage – but does not note whether these are standard coverages included with every policy or options that can be added on for an extra premium.

They also list Equipment Breakdown coverage, which does appear to be an option that can be added to your policy.

In addition to standard homeowner’s insurance, Northern Neck also offers a variety of other types of home insurance. This includes renter’s insurance, condo insurance, and landlord insurance for rental properties.

Additionally, they have a Rural Estate package that can be added on to a homeowner’s policy. This provides extra coverage for farm buildings, equipment, livestock, and more that are not the main source of income for the homeowner. It also adds on farm liability.

Personal Umbrella

Like the other programs, information on Northern Neck’s personal umbrella policy is also very limited. There is not a list of limits nor is it made clear whether it is available only to Northern Neck home and auto customers.


There are no rates available for Northern Neck, not at all surprising given their small size and agent approach to sales. With so little information on the products, getting rates from an agent is necessary even to find out what kind of coverage you would get for your money.

The site does offer an agent locator service to find the nearest option for getting quotes, and there is also a form that can be filled out in order to request an agent contact you with a quote.

We do not usually expect companies like Northern Neck to have the lowest rates; small companies usually make up for higher premiums with excellent customer service, which we will take a look at in another section.


The website does not offer a dedicated claims section. We found the claims information instead on the contact page of the site.

Policyholders are directed to contact their agent to file a claim during business hours. After hours, a toll-free number can be used to file a claim.

There is a separate 24-hour line that can be reached for roadside assistance needs.

Beyond the phone numbers, the Northern Neck website gives no claims information. This may be located in the member center section once logged in, but we were unable to verify this.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Northern Neck has been Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited since 2013 and has an A+ rating. The file lists only three complaints in the past three years, all of which have been closed.

The four reviews on Yelp are each different, with a one, three, four, and five-star review making for a mixed look at the company. The overall rating is 3.5-stars. The complaints are about slow response and one about a denied claim. Northern Neck appears to be responsive to reviews and complaints.

Northern Neck has 3.8 stars overall based on 30 Google reviews. There are a lot of highly positive reviews as well as some negative ones, mainly dealing with claims issues. Overall, this company appears to enjoy a good reputation.

The Bottom Line

For those who prefer to work with an agent and obtain their insurance from a small, Virginia-focused company, Northern Neck is a good bet. We are unable to provide a solid opinion due to the lack of product information and rates, but they have a good reputation and are well worth adding to your comparison list.

  1. I am a senior and I went to [Redacted] Ins. Agency to get quotes for homeowners, auto and umbrella. They got several quotes from different Ins. companies but my agent [Redacted] recommended Northern Neck because they have a whole home policy for 50.00 per year. I asked him if it was any good as I have heard when they get done prorating it’s not worth it. He said its a good policy and they pay for whatever reason if broke its needs replacing and it would be a 500.00 deductible. He said like if ac dies its covered for the 500. He said he had a friend that had his replaced with no questions asked. He explained this isn’t just any policy it’s thru my Ins. company not like you purchase on the net. I decided to go with Northern Neck for this reason. Other appliances didn’t cost much more than 500. so not worth it for them.

    I paid for a years policy at [Redacted] Insurance in Mechanicsville Va. I never received anything from Northern Neck. I called [Redacted] to get my Ins. card for the car but the girl never sent anything. On July my heat pump ac broke. I called [Redacted] to get it fixed and to get my Ins. card for the car. He emailed card that day and said I needed to have someone come out and put in writing the ac problem. Got a quote and faxed to Ins. adjuster [Redacted] and took a copy to [Redacted] to fax. I got a small window ac as I am a senior and have trouble breathing when hot but small ac only helps a little in a rancher. I called [Redacted] a few times to see when he was going to get ac put in. Finally 8 days later he told me he was waiting for my ac man to call him. I told him ac man works in the field, it’s his busy season not sitting in an office could he call after hours? [Redacted] said he could call before 5:00 so no exception. I asked if he could call him back in case he didn’t get message and he had just called him. So I waited days for him to make a phone call! The next day 8-8-2018 Mr. Smith called back to say claim was denied. I asked why? I was told ac life 8 to 12 years and it had rust so claim denied. I told [Redacted] my ac was in the attic and I don’t believe it is rusted as it is indoors. He said didn’t matter too old. I asked just what my policy covered? He said I’m not going to take the time to go over that with you and hung up. So I paid $1,522.00 for Insurance and haven’t received anything but a letter telling me they have my claim. Nothing on anything else like homeowner’s policy, policy number, auto policy or policy number, umbrella policy or policy no. or whole home policy or number and have been waiting since Feb. for paperwork. My agent at Atkinson told me he called [Redacted] and he was surprised how he talked to him. My agent also spoke with the ac man and was told he never told [Redacted] there was a lot of rust. He said they all have minimal rust because of moisture. My agent said he was going over his head but today I got an email he had done all he could and there was nothing else he could do. Its still very hot here as today is August 20, 2018. looking for a Watchdog Group that would be interested into looking into this and Whole Home policy’s if they are fraud. I don’t feel this is how a senior should be treated.

  2. Northern Neck Insurance is dishonest. THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO BE WARNED! GET INSURANCE WITH A MORE HONEST COMPANY DO SOME RESEARCH! Please listen to these people, they have experienced the dishonesty like I have. I will be back to update the public about this VERY DISHONEST INSURANCE COMPANY! They treated my dying wife like CRAP over a claim. Delayed payment, caused emotional distress, and I believe they caused my wife to die sooner. Please do not do business with this company, they are awful.

  3. I am unfortunately with northern neck at this time. I filed a claim under renter’s policy and [Redacted] has informed me today that I will have to pay for my appliances first and then they will reimburse me for the costs. First, I thought this dishonest practice of doing business was outlawed years ago. Second, How can I trust a company when they say one thing one day and say something else the next and then try to blame me! I am not going to purchase something with the hopes they would keep their word. What an insane business practice of a company. Heed my advice, stay clear! They won’t have to worry about dropping me… I’m not only dropping my insurance agent with [Redacted]. But Northern Neck as well. I should have stayed with Erie!

  4. While shopping for a new insurance provider (because NN keeps going up in price), I learned they put that I had an accident in 2012. That is incorrect. I filed a claim for a broken side mirror due to a hit and run in a parking lot. Trying to get someone on the phone to discuss this with me wasted over an hour of my day! I spoke to three people before even hearing that the one person who could help was not even there. Wasted time and energy. Finally got him on the phone to hear that he will “write a letter about your claim” versus what I asked for. I want a copy of the ACTUAL WORDS they put into their computer system so I can clear my record.

    I am angered that this fraud happened to me (no doubt I’ve been paying more than I should!) and frustrated by their incompetence in handling my concerns!
