Texas-based Hochheim Prairie Insurance is a homegrown company that has remained small but steady over more than 100 years in business. They offer a basic lineup of personal and business insurance options.

About Hochheim

Hochheim Prairie Mutual Farm Insurance Association and Hochheim Prairie Casualty Insurance Company are the two branches of the company that was founded in the small farming community of Hochheim in 1892. The company grew over the decades from its roots as a farm insurer to provide a selection of products across the state.

The company’s website has an outdated feel that gives the impression they still hold to the older ways of doing things; that is an attitude that is not uncommon among small insurance companies that rely on word of mouth and face to face sales the same way they have since they were founded. The website does, however, offer modern conveniences like online bill payment.

Hochheim’s headquarters is located in Yoakum, Texas, and they sell policies through independent agents throughout the state.

Hochheim Products

The list of products offered is fairly basic: they write home insurance, auto insurance, business, and farm insurance as their main lines.

Auto Insurance

The auto insurance program is a standard policy that covers liability, comprehensive, and collision, along with several options that can be added on as needed. From what little information the site offers, there are not a lot of bells and whistles to the program – which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Hochheim has a 24/7 glass repair program that they run directly, and not through a glass company as do many other insurance companies. They even offer mobile service.

They also offer a good but basic list of common discounts that include multi-policy, safety features, and good driver discounts.

Home Insurance

The home insurance program is available to cover a number of different types of home. In addition to standard single-family home insurance, they also cover:

  • Mobile and manufactured homes
  • Multi-family homes
  • Builder’s Risk
  • Modular homes

It is very important to note that these are not complete package policies.

While most homeowner’s insurance policies include liability, Hochheim’s do not. Instead, in a highly unusual move, they sell liability insurance as a separate policy that can be added on. Liability insurance is a vital part of a complete home insurance package, and we highly recommend purchasing this coverage.

Farm and Ranch Building, Machinery, and Equipment coverage can also be added as an extra endorsement. This is treated as an add-on to home insurance rather than a separate product.

Small Business Insurance

Hochheim offers package policies for a variety of small businesses, particularly family-owned businesses.

Among the types of businesses that can be insured are:

  • Professional Offices
  • Retail
  • Restaurants
  • Service industry
  • Bed and Breakfast
  • Multi-family and garden apartments

Rates

We are not surprised to see that Hochheim does not have an option for online quoting. This type of company tends to operate on a personal basis and relies on agents and referrals to bring in new business rather than internet searches and quotes.

In general, we do not typically expect smaller companies to have the best rates – at least not in comparison to the major direct sales insurers. The value in these policies is added in the personal service offered by the agent, and hopefully by great claims handling.

Claims

Backing up our agent-driven view of this company is the recommendation that claims should first be directed to your agent. There is also an after hours toll-free line that can be called to report a claim when the agent’s office is not open.

There is a list of claims representatives in each area of the state, along with phone numbers and what appears to be a shared email address. The somewhat confusing instructions, however, seem to indicate that these people will contact the insured after the claim is filed through the agent – and should not be contacted directly to file a claim.

Since agent office hours may vary, and the ability to get a hold of the agent even during those office hours will also vary, this system leaves some gaps in the ability of the customer to reach someone in regards to their claim at all hours of the day. This is not an unusual problem with small insurance companies, but in the modern age will likely frustrate those who have become accustomed to constant and immediate access to assistance.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Hochheim has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there is only one complaint on file in the past three years. That single complaint was closed in the past three months.

We are not the least bit surprised that we found very little in consumer reviews for this company. With a company that does not operate heavily online, we also find customers that are not as likely to write a review online.

The Bottom Line

There does not seem to be any red flags when reviewing Hochheim, but there is also a general lack of detailed information that makes it hard to form a solid opinion. Hochheim is likely to appeal to people who like local, agent-run insurance where things are handled by traditional, old-school methods.

  1. This is very interesting information.

I wanted to get quotes for my home and auto insurance and was preparing to call Hochheim, however, I never received a return call from the company nor either of the two “independent” agents I contacted.

Looks like I may have dodged a future bullet by not becoming a Hochheim customer!

    • You sure did dodge a bullet with them.

I also found out through an honest insurance independent agent they did not insure my house for its total 2019 replacement cost if it was ever totaled.

They cost a lot of money and do not insure you properly.

Finding the proper independent insurance agent makes all the difference.

She even got me with Travelers who insures you annually for car insurance.

I did not think anyone did that. I love being able to pay annually.

Of course, we all know none of them are going to actually pay you anything on a claim, but at least the legal requirements are covered that force us to buy their products.

  2. I am David and had Hoccheim when I first bought my house three years ago.

My insurance with them went from $2114 a year to $2906 a year. That is a 37% jump.

It increased my house note by $66 a month. I have not once had a claim. They are just greedy.

  3. My wife was hit by a man with Hochheim Prairie insurance. They use East Texas Claims as a go-between when you have a claim against them. I am preparing to go to small claims court against them now. They are impossible to deal with. If I had it to do over I would have hired a lawyer from the beginning. It’s not situational in my opinion, it’s them. If I’m ever forced to deal with Hochheim Prairie or East Texas Claims again, I will hire a lawyer, BEFORE I speak with them.—Even though I have never hired a lawyer in my life.

  5. My pickup and my wife’s car was sitting in our driveway, our neighbor blacked out while driving down the road. Before coming to a stop, he plowed through a fence and T-boned my pickup, pushing it into my wife’s car. Moving both vehicles over 10ft. Totaled our both vehicles, and Hochheim Prairie Insurance hasn’t got us a rental or even called us yet. This was a week ago, my wife and I are both without a ride, and no word from the insurance company.

  6. My Aunt’s Homeowner’s Insurance has gone up from $535.00 to $828.00; she has been with them for years and has never filed a claim, she has no income, receives social security; time to find another insurance company.

  7. Wow, read some of the comments above, had no idea that Hochheim could or would give their members such a run-around. My issue was that my renewal home policy wants $160.00 increase of premium. We have been with them 20yrs plus, and my calling to inquire why such an increase, has me worried. I have made (2) calls to the Pleasanton Tx office, and left my message, asking why….but no reply, yet. Since asking around and comparing with others, I am considering starting a new relationship with another Insurance company. KO

  8. If you have this company & or an insurance person wants to put you with them,” RUN”! There are many insurance companies out there & this one is NOT a good one. They are in a small place in West Tx.( [Redacted]) & they are NOT going to honor anything & I think they are crooks. I found a much better place for my auto ins. once they went up for NO REASON $162.00 more. BUT, my agent had moved into a new bigger nicer building, so I was NOT going to pay for that either. Check out your options & YOUR AGENT, there are many & some want to railroad you. Searching & doing the work pays off. “”Ask questions & get it in writing for sure, BEFORE A CLAIM”. Make them stand by their word because some are like car salesmen, just say ANYTHING to get your hard earned money. The best thing to do is to put a sign in your front yard & on here, the BBB, consumer affairs & let it be known about crooks! The sign is a forever thing to keep in your yard for ALL to see. I have even walked in front of a place of business with a sign & my first amendment right, freedom of speech about my problem & it worked. If I ever have to again, I WILL! Be your own voice & make it heard!

  9. My wife and I had Hochheim Insurance, on our house, for 10 years without one single claim. In 2017 we had a huge hurricane that did massive damage to Texas. Our house sustained damages over $13,000.00 that Hochheim cut to $10,000.00. We had an insurance policy that paid for actual cost replacement. Hochheim has fought us at every turn. They required us to pay for repairs, we basically finance Hochheim, and they promise to repay at some future date. They do this by using terms like “actual cash value” and “recoverable depreciation costs.” It is 3 months since the storm and the fight continues. We have another house, from my Mother’s passing, and the insurance company on this house, Foremost, paid off the entire claim in 48 hours from placement by adjustor. Hochheim rates are less costly but the old adage, you get what you pay for, could never be more true. I would not recommend Hochheim to anyone.

  10. Hello, my name is Joe Villanueva, we live in Hereford, Tx. We have had insurance on our home for 11 years with Hochheim, we filed a claim in 2012 after a hail storm in our area, all the homes next to ours, across the street and down the block got roofs replaced, the adjuster sent out by “hohim” said ours was still in good condition and would not be replaced, claim denied. Filed a claim July 2017, shingles on the floor, torn paper, shingles lifted up by the storm, adjustor came, looked said the roof is still great shape, some minor wind damage, nothing significant. “Hohim” paid 81.00. We have paid 11 years, had one claim denied, and got 81bucks for the second one. Our agent has his secretary call for him, we can hear her asking him the questions we ask, he has no balls to talk to us straight up. He’ a coward that hides behind that poor girls skirt, by the way, he runs the [Redacted]. This is the worst insurance company you can get, they haven’t heard the last of me though. DO NOT GIVE THESE THIEVES YOUR MONEY, YOU’LL NEVER GET ANYTHING BACK!!!

  11. I have been with Hochheim for over 23 years and they refused to pay for my Roof due to storm damage. Claimed that the only time i filed for almost the same roof repair that it was not done, so they sent 2 different men out at different times to make it look like it was not repaired. The 2nd guy took some pictures also and compared them to the first guys pictures so he could say see its the same. Crooks is all they are, so if you go to get insurance be sure not to get Hochheim they will just steal your money. I am putting this on every site I can find and letting everyone around the world know how they are crocked as the Devil.

  12. We have had Hochheim Prairie Homeowner insurance for 16+ years on this house and several years at our previous house, I filed a claim for roof damage due to hail in2016 and the adjuster came out and said it was wind damage and paid $547, but about 60% of the houses in our neighborhood have filed insurance for hail damage from the same storm and received roof replacement. My contractor said we have hail damage but the adjuster said there was none . I would not recommend this company to anyone, as it seems they try to dodge paying claims.
I’m still trying to get this claim for a new roof as we deserve

  13. Hi my name is Carolyn Lung, not sure how long I have been with this company for my auto and home and auto. A few years back I filed a claim for my roof and received a check for I think 1500 dollars they said it was wind damage not hail damage, the adjuster that came out had told me if later on I noticed any missing shingles I could make another claim so I did but your company refused to pay in fact you guys threaten to cancel my insurance if I did not have all repairs made by June 6, 2016 there was a long list and my insurance would be cancelled in November 2016 while still you would continue taking money out of my account for the premium . I was unable to talk to anyone in charge of course. So I am going to officially a complaint with the BBB plus I am going to the media with my complaint I pay a lot of money to have my home insured. You should be able to file more than one claim. There have been many storms in the Mineola and surrounding areas in 2016 as well as 2015. It is sad when you have hire an attorney to help you . I am not giving up I will file a lawsuit if I have to. I am sincerely hoping I will be contacted asap.

    • I was to renew my auto policy and have been with Hochheim Prairie for approx 3 years. I got my letter to renew my policy. It was $162 more per year. I have NO TICKETS, NO ACCIDENTS and a clean driving record, nothing has changed. Except auto a year OLDER! I called them and they “NEVER returned my call.” I will file a complaint with the BBB. State Insurance board in Austin as to why this is almost half as much more as I usually pay a per year and I am NEVER LATE on a payment. Shows you what they think of their customers. This is highway robbery! Plus, adding insult by NOT returning call.I will call my agent again, Tuesday. They would send it a few days before the Labor day Holiday, so you Can not do anything and makes your Holiday suck!,
