Massachusetts-based Plymouth Rock Assurance serves a handful of surrounding states with a range of insurance options. Their products are mainly personal insurance, but they also offer commercial auto.

About Plymouth Rock

Plymouth Rock Assurance was founded in 1982 and is part of the Plymouth Rock Group of Companies. They operate in five states: Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The company focuses mainly on auto insurance and home insurance, and the available policies vary depending on the state. In some states, they also write commercial auto insurance policies.

Recently, Plymouth Rock re-branded several of its group of companies to bring everything in under the same company name. The goal was to create a unified brand and grow name recognition. In some cases, the underlying companies continue to operate with their original names, but they all use the Plymouth Rock brand.

Policies are sold through independent agents across the service area.

Plymouth Rock Insurance Products

Plymouth Rock writes auto and home insurance in all five states. Additional coverage is also available in some states.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance policy options vary a little depending on the state, but Plymouth Rock policies include all of the basics. Each policy meets the state requirements for base coverage, but can be adjusted and enhanced to be customized.

The website does not provide much information on what the available options are but instead suggests speaking to an agent in your state.

There is an impressive list of discounts on the site. These include common choices like good student, good driver, and anti-theft. Also available are affinity discounts – although which groups are involved is not listed – advance purchase, motor club, and more.

Plymouth Rock also has a special car insurance program for educators called the Teacher’s Plan of New Jersey. It provides coverage for teachers at all levels in New Jersey.

In Massachusetts, they have an auto insurance program affiliated with AARP for members of that group.

All of Plymouth Rock’s auto policies come with a few perks that are unusual.

Get Home Safe is a program that pays for the cost of a ride home – whether that’s a taxi or another option – if the insured driver does not feel safe driving home. There is not much detail on what that might comprise or if it includes situations within the driver’s control such as alcohol consumption.

There is also a loyalty rewards program and the Road Rewards app. This is something similar to the usage-based discount programs offered by other companies but has no impact on your insurance rates. Instead, in return for using an app that tracks your driving habits, the program provides rewards including gift cards and discounts.

Home Insurance

Plymouth Rock writes a variety of home policies, including standard homeowner’s, condo, and renter’s insurance policies. There is not a lot of information is available on these policies, but they include all of the usual coverage for a home insurance package. Basics listed are dwelling coverage, liability, loss of use, and personal property coverage.

The options include endorsements for higher value personal property and identity theft protection.

Coverage can vary by state, and again the site directs visitors to speak with an agent to find out what options are available and customize a package policy.

Other Products

Plymouth Rock writes commercial auto – their only commercial product – in three states. Those are Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Jersey.

Personal Umbrella insurance is also available in all states except for Pennsylvania.

Plymouth Rock does have an online quoting system, and although they do not provide coverage in our usual sample area, we did run a quick quote. We chose the same zip code as the company’s Boston headquarters for our sample quote and quoted a 30-year-old male driver with a 2010 Honda Accord and a clean record.

Our sample returned a full coverage quote of $120 a month. The 12-month premium came to $1,388.

We found the quoting system a little clunky, with a lot of questions to be answered and a lot of details. That said, it was very customizable in terms of coverage and did return a quote fairly quickly.

Plymouth Rock Insurance Claims can be reported online by logging in to the policyholder account or using a policy number to sign in to the system.

There are different claim phone numbers for each of the various states, so policyholders should check the detailed information for their state of residence in order to find the correct number to call. All claims lines are toll-free and open 24 hours.

The company’s Door to Door Valet service handles the claim from start to finish. This means they will arrange for pickup of the vehicle, bring it to one of their network shops, handle all of the repairs, and bring it back to you when the repair is complete.

Also available is the Crashbusters mobile claim service, which will meet the policyholder at any location and help with taking care of the claim, even with a shop that is not in the network. In some cases, the company will issue a repair check on the spot so that repairs can move forward.

The claims section of the website is very robust and answers just about any question a policyholder could have. The included services make this claims program a step above what most regional insurers, and even many huge insurers, offer.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Is Plymouth Rock a good insurance company? Plymouth Rock has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only 10 complaints on file in the past three years. That is low for a good-sized regional insurance company. There are a few reviews left on the page, most of which are claims issues complaints. The company does respond to most of the reviews.

There are 37 reviews on Consumer Affairs for this company with an overall three out of five-star rating. That is quite good for a site where we rarely see positive reviews. There are several glowing reviews as well as some complaints, most of which are about claims issues.

The Bottom Line

Plymouth Rock Assurance is a solid choice for those in their coverage area, with policies that have above-and-beyond benefits and a good reputation overall. We are unable to provide a true comparison on rates, but they are well worth a comparison to other options out there, even the big-name companies.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. I don’t understand how anybody rates this guys well… I have other auto insurance (Classic Car) and have had other carriers.

I have NEVER disliked or felt cheated by ANY company more than these crooks.

They’ll seem fine enough to you when they lure you in, but wait until you actually need them.. then you’ll see (or I hope you’ll think better and won’t have to learn!)

Am a Plymouth Rock Customer for the past 12 or more years. Paid for “Accident forgiveness”.

When they renewed me in Sept. 2018, rates went up like 25%.

Called to ask, they said “Oh, it’s because we changed our underwriting protocol (or something like that).

Good news, since you haven’t had a re-underwrite in three years, you are eligible for a re-underwriting though.”

Now, I do not understand how they just jack customer rates based on a change in how they rate you.

But even more perplexing is that when my Agent did the re-underwrite, the rates DID come down to more or less where they had been.

So OK, let’s just do this.

Now while this is going on, I had a small fender bender.

Although I still maintain it wasn’t my fault (he hit me, I was standing still!) it got written up as my fault.

No big deal I thought, for the first time in 12 years I’ll use the accident forgiveness that I PAY for.

Except then the Agent calls. The accident forgiveness is on the old policy.

The new underwriting isn’t in force yet, so it’s now going to be more or less the same because of the accident. I said WHAT?

I tried to call and explain to the Reps at Plymouth Rock. Even went to the Customer Service Rep supervisors.

I explained that paying $1,000 a year more was not fair, and that shouldn’t somehow my accident forgiveness from the existing policy carry to the “new” underwriting?

I mean it’s really quite customer unfriendly that, in order to NOT pay $1,000 more, I have to have the Policy re-written to begin with – why can’t they just look at my 12-year claim-free policy and apply the same rate method to it?

She got it, and said she would certainly take it up and get back to me; I did this TWICE.

No one EVER called back. So I got stuck paying an extra grand for my 2018-2019.

They screwed a 12 year customer without a care, and all I got was a lot of double speak from (very NICE) customer service reps about how underwriting changed.

I don’t CARE what you did internally.

And why in the name of the Lord would the new underwriting method charge me almost $1,000 more as an existing customer than it does if it’s written up like I was a new customer (rhetorical question, you do the math).

Bottom line is they are HAPPY to SCREW their long time customers and make it at best inconvenient for you to do anything about it.

And if they would do this to me (and they DID), they WILL eventually do it to you, rest assured.

Save yourself the grief – AVOID this SCAM house like they are the BLACK PLAGUE!! Don’t say nobody warned you!

  2. I would’ve never given this fraudulent company any stars at all if it wasn’t required to make a comment.

My son called the company on 8/13/2019 for a quote and spoke to an agent named Dave, who has absolutely no clue of the companies policies or procedures.

My son wanted the General Insurance Company, who would’ve referred him if they couldn’t help him.

Dave told him that they were apart of the General which is a LIE and my son never questioned him seeing how they advertised the Generals image for their bates on the internet.

He quoted my son about 3 different quotes during this phone call.

My son reached out to me with questions, due to the fact that he’s never had his own policy before and asked if the quotes sounded reasonable since he was unsure.

We conferenced the call with Dave, and after noticing that he seemed to be babbling false information to me, I asked him to cancel whatever he was doing, I wasn’t comfortable with his responses and my son would look elsewhere for vehicle coverage.

He proceeded to undermine my authority, telling me he needed a valid reason not to proceed.

I told him just speaking to him was all it took, and what we planned on doing was pretty much none of his business, especially when my son was just calling for a quote.

The quotes first started at 189, then 230, then it went to over 300 dollars.

I definitely would prefer to use a legitimate, well-known company at those rates.

Dave became so upset, told us that he would have to speak to the supervisor.

Dave had my son and me on hold for an hour while he apparently had to search the whole community for this supervisor.

He would then pick up the phone while we were on hold every 15 minutes to put us on hold again.

I asked to speak with the supervisor because I had enough of his crap.

I was told none were available and then that the supervisor was in a meeting.

Keep in mind every 15 minutes, he was stating what the supervisor said, now suddenly the supervisor wasn’t available.

We decided to terminate the call and I advised my son to call his bank.

The bank stated that SkyBlue had deducted over $300 from my sons account.

We called SkyBlue back, asking for a refund and was put on a very long hold again.

Finally Andy Gonzalez the supervisor spoke with us and guaranteed a refund 3-5 business days.

I also told him about Dave’s behavior, and that he definitely needed training on customer service.

We were sent a confirmation for the refund request and waited until 8/21/2019 for an update.

We spoke to a representative from Plymouth Rock insurance company and was told that the request was not processed from SkyBlue their “power agent.”

They proceeded to say that they would expedite the refund by snail mail/ standard mail.

I’m sure you know how frustrated we were at this point.

Plymouth Rock then sent my son an email 10 minutes later after saying they would process the refund asking for proof that his account was debited or it will take another 10 to14 days.

What a joke, my son had previously done that, when he was on the phone with them.

We will be reporting the whole situation as Fraud to our bank, who’s currently in the process of retrieving my son’s money.

We have emails that were sent to us guaranteeing the refund and reporting SkyBlue and Plymouth Rock to the BBB.

They debited my son’s account, he wasn’t sent any confirmation completing the policy, but now we’re supposed to send proof of the debit that the company knows they took.

I wouldn’t refer this company to anyone ever. I’m quite sure the excellent reviews were written by their friends and family members because their overall performance is below zero.

Take into note that these people commenting have only 1 or 2 reviews.

    Do not use this company.

My son went to Geico, and received an excellent quote, way lower and they’re a well-established carrier also.

I’m sorry for the carriers who will have to deal with them when something really does happen, and I feel bad for anyone who has an accident with one of their carriers also, seeing how they don’t want to pay out when they’re at fault.

  3. My car was hit while parked.

But Plymouth rock insurance said, I was lying, my car was in motion while hit.

Even I provided every document indicating that I was even not in the country during the time.

The customer is very rude, not patient, and never follow up the phone call or message.

I talked to one of the supervisor, he denied my case after two weeks.

I asked for the detailed reason, evidence and report. They said they cannot provide it.

How does it make sense that you deny my claim but do not provide any details evidence and fact?

The worst experience ever. Do not use them. I will go to court. They have bad faith insurance.

  4. I was in an auto accident, and almost a week later after accepting fault, they still have yet to resolve the auto claim. They are delaying the resolution because of the said excuse “please wait while we investigate our client, his coverage may be canceled or lowered due to the results”.

It only takes a few mins to see if someone has coverage, much less to investigate their coverage. Their constant stalling is very shady and unethical. Meanwhile, my vehicle is totaled and awaiting insurance claims. I cannot drive my vehicle, it’s completely disabled and I cannot provide for my family while my vehicle is disabled.

  5. So, no courtesy call today. Sorry but I guess the saying treat everyone like you would to be treated, is not your motto so don’t worry about responding because also you never know who the person is that you are dealing with. Good luck…..

  6. I can’t believe, 1st, one of your insurers hit me, I got a callback day which missed by two seconds say to call him back, I did for more than a week before calling corporate office,as I am taking two members of my family back and forth from cancer treatments, still nothing as he went on vacation without a courtesy call. Finally 1 week ago [Redacted] came here and gave me estimate and said a check would be sent in a couple day and again 1 week, no call back, no check and of course no callback from [Redacted]. Just a friggin phone call. I have also written to BBB and sent an email to the cancer society to show them that I can’t get a frighten phone call. Maybe somebody who is low enough on the totem pole could call me, my claim number is [Redacted]. How embarrassing for your company. Yes I am angry and rightfully so. I am sure you have my numbers.
