Founded to help farmers obtain insurance coverage that met their specific needs, Farm Bureau is a membership-driven insurance and financial services company offering a huge range of products across multiple states. More than an insurance company, membership offers a variety of perks along with access to products and services.

Farm Bureau Summary

Farm Bureau Financial Services traces its history back to the founding of the Iowa Farm Mutual Insurance Company in 1939. Originally, the company wrote farm liability insurance, but expanded into personal lines coverage including auto, home, and life, and added financial products as well over the years.

Today the company is made up of a couple of underlying companies, The Farm Bureau Mutual Holding Company, whose subsidiaries are Farm Bureau Property and Casualty Insurance Company and Western Agricultural Insurance Company, and Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company. In association with farm bureaus in the states they serve, they provide products to members.

All Farm Bureau products are sold through local agents, although not all products are available in every state. There is no online quoting, but members can log in online or use the Farm Bureau app to manage their policies.

Insurance Products

Farm Bureau covers all of the basics of personal insurance along with specialty policies and even health insurance products. Business insurance is also available, as well as coverage for farmers, the company’s original market.

Auto Insurance

Farm Bureau does not offer much in the way of detail when it comes to their auto insurance. Their program appears to offer all of the basic required coverage as well as common options such as comprehension, collision, and replacement cost.

Discounts include a bundling discount for auto and home with Farm Bureau, safe driver, and low mileage discounts, all common options. The company also offers their Young Driver Safety Program, which includes a discount when completed.

Farm Bureau also writes coverage for other types of vehicles, including:

  • Motorcycles
  • Recreational Vehicles
  • Farm Vehicles

Home Insurance

Farm Bureau offers a range of different home insurance products for property and liability coverage. Products offered are:

  • Homeowners Insurance – Designed for single-family homes, which provides basic structure, personal property, and liability. There are also options such as Equipment Breakdown and Guaranteed Replacement Cost coverage available.
  • Condo Owner’s Insurance – Provides specific coverage for condos that do not require the same kind of structure coverage, as well as personal property and liability. Extras like Actual Cash Value also available with these policies.
  • Renter’s Insurance – Covers the personal property and liability risks of tenants.
  • Mobile Home Insurance – A homeowners policy aimed specifically at the risks particular to mobile homes.
  • Add-on Policies to cover high-value items and other structures, as well as Identity Theft.

Life Insurance

Farm Bureau offers all of the standard types of life insurance, including term, whole, and universal. They also have variable life insurance products available. Simple Term policies are available with no medical exam in certain circumstances.

Additional Products

Farm Insurance

In keeping with their background and their name, Farm Bureau offers coverage for farms and ranches of all kinds. Available for family-owned farms, the Farm Bureau Member’s Choice package policy is designed to meet the needs of farming operations of all sizes.

Also available is Commercial Ag coverage, which provides package policy options to cover commercial farming operations.

Crop and Livestock Insurance is also available to cover valuable farm products.

Business Insurance

Farm Bureau covers more than just farms. They have business insurance that includes:

  • Commercial businesses large and small
  • Home-based businesses
  • Ag-based businesses
  • Worker’s Compensation
  • Employee Benefits

Health Insurance

Farm Bureau offers assistance with selecting health insurance plans in accordance with the ACA. They also offer long-term care and disability income insurance.

Financial Products

In addition to their long list of insurance products, Farm Bureau offers financial products. These include:

  • Annuities
  • Retirement savings
  • College savings
  • Mutual Funds
  • Estate Planning

Farm Bureau Rates

Since there is no online quoting option, there is no way to easily compare Farm Bureau rates to other companies. As an agent-driven insurance company, we can expect the cost of agent commissions to have an impact on rates.

When it comes to the overall cost of insurance, it’s also important to bear in mind that the Farm Bureau requires membership in order to purchase their products, which comes with a fee.

Claims

Farm Bureau has two separate 24-hour claims lines, one for life insurance and one for all other personal lines products. Auto and home claims can also be reported online by logging into the My Account customer portal. This section of the website can also be used to track the status of a claim. Claims can also be filed through an agent.

Farm Bureau has a Preferred Auto Repair Shop program through which repairs are guaranteed for the life of the car, although policyholders can always select their own repair shop. Either way, an adjuster will inspect the damage and investigate the incident, and then determine how policy benefits will apply before settling the claim.

There is no estimate available for claims settlement time, but as with all insurance companies, this depends greatly on the type of claim and extent of the damage and injuries.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Farm Bureau Financial has been Better Business Bureau accredited since 1955. They have an A+ rating as of the time of this review, and have a total of 16 complaints on record in the past three years. Five of those were closed in the past 12 months.

A review of various websites shows a few negative reviews, complaints about billing and claims, and also a surprising number of positive reviews, something that is very unusual for any insurance company. Overall, there are few major concerns and the positive reviews appear in enough numbers to be encouraging.

Bottom Line

Farm Bureau Insurance is a membership organization, so it may not appeal to those who don’t want to join in order to obtain coverage. For those who are members of their local farm bureau or are interested in membership, their products might be worth a look; their programs appear solid. The company might not be competitive with major national insurers, but may appeal to those looking for personal service with added perks that are specific to farmers.

  2. Farm Bureau Insurance of FL practices very unethical business practices! DO NOT get insurance with them! I had auto insurance with them and my policy effective date and my insurance card says the effective date ended in 8/12/18. I did not renew the policy and did not pay the renewal policy they sent me because they hiked up my rates even without accidents. I got a better policy premiums elsewhere. They then sent me a bill for a policy I did NOT order for AFTER 8/12/18 including late charges fees for not paying the renewal with them plus 1-month’s insurance premium! Then telling me that my policy was canceled after that one month. When I called they said Farm Bureau AUTOMATICALLY renewed the policy for me and I owe them one’s one premium (even though I did not ask for it)! That is the kind of unethical business practices Farm Bureau does! DO NOT get insurance with them. You will regret it!

  3. Farm Bureau is a crooked place I wouldn’t advise anyone to get insurance from this company. It seems good a first for first 3 months, but month by month prices go up. One of the agents messed up my policy and the policy was canceled and I was without insurance for several days cause of there mistake but they want me to pay an arm and a leg for something they created. This is an evil business stay away.

  4. Total scam artists. The [Redacted] NC office is a joke. Had to drop my car insurance and they still had my other vehicle and home covered. As soon as I dropped my one vehicle they hiked my auto insurance 10% or $500. This is even after I have been a loyal, no claims, customer for over 10 years. Went to speak with the rep and just excuses. The best part is, they had to extort the money from me because in NC an insurance agent cannot break the contract unless the owner signs a form saying that s/he gives permission, Farm Bureau said fine, do not sign the form and we will revoke all your insurance. Cannot even go to another insurance company because they all communicate and the rate was the same. Never go with Farm Bureau.

  5. THE FARM BUREAU and FARM BUREAU MUTUAL INS are a criminal enterprise disguised as a non-profit and insurance company. I was intentionally hit and ran on my motorcycle on an Oklahoma freeway with many witnesses in which the perpetrator was caught 15 minutes after he fled. He was issued a ticket for hit and run and assault with a deadly weapon and the highway patrol got his insurance info for me. I filed a claim with his Farm Bureau Ins that day. A little internet research leads me to find that the perpetrator was a CITY DIRECTOR FOR THE FARM BUREAU..the very man that represents the farmers to the Department of Agriculture. In the two weeks it took for fault to be assigned I called every lawyer in Oklahoma, all said since he admitted to his bad action that his insurance would not cover my damages which totalled close to 6 thousand dollars (my bike is a Harley). Much to my surprise..they paid to fix my bike but would not rent me a car so I was stuck bumming rides for over three months. After 2 months and over 30 phone calls to the District Attorney, I finally get an appointment, only to find out that the perpetrator was only being charged with simple hit and run (less than $300 in damage). Now after 9 months, the DA has not recharged the Farm Bureau guy, he still has his drivers license and goes travelling around the country. The Farm Bureau adjuster is now trying to get me to sign off on a low ball settlement. Oklahoma law says if you hit and run, you owe your victim damages times 3..so I’ve been hounding the adjuster that he owes me $12k to settle…his biggest offer is 2k…as if. The Adjuster even said that “I need to recognise my liability in this matter.” Just exactly how am I liable for his insured to intentionally run me over on my motorcycle and then flee the scene? That’s okay…I filed in small claims court with a $10k max and those idiots can explain their position to the judge..who hopefully isn’t part the Farm Bureau Crime Family.

  6. I’ve been with Farm Bureau for at least 10 years and more. I got married and my husband got on my account. We started having problems and he began changing things in my account without my knowledge and they never informed me of any changes. I wanted some vehicles taken off my account and they said they needed about a week to make changes before they could take anything off my account, so I had to pay for that month’s insurance but the next month should have been taken care of and the vehicles that I no longer wanted off my insurance. Well…it wasn’t, everything was the same as last month’s and now my account is overdrawn. They listened to my soon to be ex-husband whenever he would make changes in my account without my consent, also now his mother is his P.O.A. and she’s driving our vehicle and I’m assuming she’s talked to Farm Bureau and they’ve let her out the vehicle on her insurance or took it off mine without my knowledge. So why do you even need someone to be the main person in the account if anyone can change anything without the main account member having any knowledge. I am so disappointed and hurt on how Farm Bureau or my representative has done me. I would not recommend

  7. Texas Farm Bureau is crooked. Texas state law says a payout to a 3rd party OVER $1500.00 requires the check to include the finance/lien holder to be on a payout check. Farm Bureaus policy is to include the finance and lien holder on ALL checks to ensure the company doesn’t actually pay out. Then raise the premiums on their policyholders for claims against their policies, not paying out and doubling profits. I recommend all claims against Texas Farm Bureau to be done with a lawyer in court.

  8. **EVERYONE STAY AWAY FROM FARM BUREAU!!!!! I have been with them since I started driving. My car is in the shop for almost a week and the adjuster finally looked at my car yesterday!!! They were supposed to look at it the next day NOT 6 DAYS LATER!! They will not cover my damages saying they can or cannot determine the damages to my vehicle is related to the cause. I told them there are only 2 other causes. 1 a wreck (but we know this is not true because there is no outside damage) or 2. I took a crowbar and damaged my own radiator. He said well the cost to fix it is less than your deductible. I said no. So far its $882 and my deductible is $500. He said well you shouldn’t have taken it to the dealership! And furthermore, I am paying OUT OF POCKET for my rental car. They will not pay for a rental until the adjuster looks at the car. Remind you it took 6 days for them to look at it and I am home alone with 2 little kids and had to work for 4 days! Told them I have always recommended them, but now I will let everyone know how they really are and will be changing insurance companies!

    • T, I feel your pain. I had a roof put on due to wind damage a few years back. Contractor messed it up so now water pours in-house. Farm Bureau said they would not fix it, but they were the ones who hired the contractor, not me. So now I have to put 4000.00 in a roof. So to everyone, stay away from Farm Bureau. By the way, I am in Rockwood. I will have my day in court in Kingston also. The sad thing is, I’ve been with them for 20 years.

  10. I hope this is helpful to other prospective customers. I am getting ready to close on a cottage in Edenton, NC. I have two quotes thus far, one from Liberty Mutual (who my auto is with) and one from Farm Bureau. The Liberty Mutual quote listed my cottage at $74,500 and the out building at $7,450 and quoted for Replacement Cost vice Actual Cash Value (ACV). The Farm Bureau quote listed the cottage value at $35,000 with no out building and quoted for Actual Cash Value. Alarms started going off in my head as soon as saw this! Contacted agent and asked for a Replacement Cost quote. Here is their actual response: “Unfortunately this home do the age and condition does not qualify for replacement cost coverage this would be all the we can write with Farm Bureau. Once you are in the home if you make major improvements I could certainly obtain new pictures and a list of all improvements and look at changing this to replacement cost for you.”
Needless to say I am not going to be going with Farm Bureau!

  11. I never had problems with Farm Bureau until the next guy got hired. He simply started out lying trying give me a small policy that would not cover what my house is worth. Then try to tell me it was the way my house was built. So after a brief discussion about how he needed to keep his job, then requested pictures of the inside of my house. I told I would send pictures but the house was being remodeled inside and out. I ask why didn’t I have problems with the first guy that wrote my insurance up. His toy was he was new which was not try or he overlooked a few things. So he just told me it best if I find insurance elsewhere. Trying to reach someone st the corporate office.

    • I’m going through a total nightmare with them right now and my insurance lapsed because nobody knows what is going on even when they have your policy their face. Now, if stay with them They are going to charge me a penalty for (although it was their fault) having a laps in my insurance and if i go somewhere else i will still be charged for a laps in my insurance so they have me stuck between a rock and a hard place. I haven’t had insurance for two days now and really don’t think they have any interest in reaching a positive solution and I’m the one going through hell with kids and no ride while waiting for them try to solve the problem in fair and acceptable manner. Earlier today they said that they would call me back, after few hours passed, i called them at 4:30 with hopes of talking to someone to get my cars insured like they should already be, only find out that they are gone for the day. I wish knew somewhere else that offers the same rates. Its damn shame that a person has go through this much hell just to get lower rates of auto insurance in SC. Farm bureau is So unethical.

  13. AVOID Farm Bureau like a plague! They cost us hundreds of dollars by literally screwing up almost every simple task we asked them to do: adding vehicles, changing drivers, etc. They would put the wrong info on, fail to respond to calls, give us wrong information: I have never seen such incompetent people!!!

  14. I also have a 30′ x 15′ ft wood shed about four years old. They did a drive by then told me they dropped coverage on it untill I painted it, even without reducing any money. So, I bought the paint, hired someone to paint it. I call and tell them to put it back on. Now, they said “sorry, you need to put siding on it. WTF! No refund for the paint and labor and still no coverage on my wood shed. Stay FAR FAR away from farm bureau. They suck!

The roof was repaired to the point that it doesn’t leak anymore but we now have a hidious two tone roof that looks like crap! Hurt the home value. Thanks Farm Bureau. You cannot be trusted. You are NOT in good hands with Farm Bureau! Check your policy close if you have Farm Bureau. Better yet just cancel them and RUN to someone else.
This company will do anything to NOT pay a claim. You’ve been warned!

  16. Farm B dropped me after 10 years because I had 3 claims in 3 years. Do not use them if you think any unforeseen things might happen. Which is what I thought insurance was for. They also didn’t notify me of the refusal to renew. My mortgage company did. When I called to speak to me agent, I was told he was on the phone with a customer. I am sure he could care less, since he already made is commission. I would not recommend this company to my worst enemy.

  17. Farm Bureau apparently has stock in the roofing supply industry. My roof is only 16 years old, but they dropped me because I would not have a new roof put on, not going to replace something that has no problems. I would not recommend doing business with them in S.C.

  18. This company hires a bunch of bullies. One of their insured damaged my vehicle causing injury and they do not want to pay my medical bills. The adjuster is [Redacted]; he is rude and disrespectful at least. He tried to offer me $1000.00 when that did not even cover my ER bill. When I refuse, he told me to get an attorney. Therefore, I guess the only way to get things done is to sue them. I would not advise anyone to do business with this company. When I asked for corporate information, he continuously gives me the number to his friend stating it is his supervisor, and that person is as rude as he is.

I did read it and have the paperwork to prove that I asked for my policy to be cancelled on a later date. Not the date I came in. They cancelled it that day I came in and blamed me for not reading the paperwork right. The agent even stated, “I’m looking at the paperwork right now that you signed. Didn’t you read what you signed?” The agent then told me that I may have to pay a fee for the reinstatement that was their fault in the first place!! I called the Raleigh branch and they took care of everything for me with a great attitude. Be afraid of the Statesville branch. Very afraid. I got insurance through another company and I am now saving $50 a month for the same full coverage!!!

I made a claim made my police report it has been 30 days as of today my claim have not been settled. So far the claims adjuster had me record what happened fill out a sworn statement for proof of loss. On the forms it clearly states that my claim have not been accepted yet. I never been late on payments this is my only claim my car is a total loss it seems as if they are trying not to pay for my claim. I do have a rental that they are covering but it is about to be past 30 days still haven’t heard anything. This company is the worst I ever had to deal with they make you feel like you are the criminal. I will give an update as soon as they let me know.

  27. Had Farm Bureau insurance for nearly 40 years, only two small claims in that time, always paid premiums on time. Once I thought I had paid my premium with online banking but mistakenly neglected to click send. Two weeks after premium deadline I got a letter saying my policies had been canceled 12 days earlier. I called my agent in near panic, concerned that I had not been covered for two weeks and didn’t know it. I was told that there was a grace period (never heard of it before) and that I was really covered, not really cancelled if I paid premium in next two weeks. The letter from them specifically said my policies “had been canceled”. I asked how I could still be covered with canceled policies. Agent said the wording was “…a scare tactic the financial dept. used…” to get me to pay quickly. I contacted the state insurance oversight division with a complaint, and they investigated to find out why I wasn’t sent a registered letter from Farm Bureau which is required by law. Bottom line – being a model policy holder for four decades is of no concern to this company, and I dropped them for a company that gave me the same coverage for $200 a year less. Very disappointed.

  28. Not shocking at all to see so many negative comments across the board. What’s the point of insuring your vehicle (with FULL coverage) if they just make every excuse in the book to cover as little of the damage cost as possible? Blame the driver, claim that the damage is unrelated to the accident…The excuses they come up with are mind-blowing. Total [Redacted] rip-off.

Wait, that’s called Obamacare and I’m sure you think college should be free and everybody should make the same wage, right? I can see your Bernie or Hillary bumper sticker from here.
