Selective Insurance has been in the property & casualty industry for nearly 100 years, providing coverage to residents of 22 different states in the Eastern and Midwestern U.S. They offer auto insurance, home insurance, and business insurance. They are are also one of the biggest flood insurers in the country.

Selective Summary

Selective Insurance was founded in Branchville, New Jersey in 1926. Daniel Smith and a few other colleagues founded the company as Selected Risks Insurance Company in a small storefront. In 1928, the company become a stock company as Selected Risks Indemnity, and a year later formed Selected Risks Fire Insurance Company.

In the 1930s, the company expanded to add general liability and worker’s compensation as well as adding three new states and D.C. to their operations. In 1958, the two companies merged into Selected Risks Insurance Company. The company continued expansion and in 1986 made the final name change to Selective Insurance Company of America.

Today Selective offers coverage in 22 states and D.C. offering personal and business products, although offerings differ by states. Products are sold through more than 2000 independent agents. As mentioned, Selective also ranks as the 6th largest provider of flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Insurance Products

Selective Insurance writes auto and home as well as personal umbrella, missing just life insurance on the list of major personal lines products. They also write basic commercial insurance.

Auto Insurance

Selective offers a basic auto insurance program with all of the common coverage options such as liability and collision.

They also offer The Selective Edge, an add-on package available to customers that take out both auto and home with the company.

The Selective Edge package includes:

  • Towing and Labor
  • Rental/Transportation Expense coverage
  • Personal Property coverage
  • Accidental Airbag Deployment
  • Key Replacement

Selective also offers a good list of discounts such as multi-policy and an affinity discount for those in the medical and educational fields.

They also offer several payment structure options to fit any budget.

Home Insurance

Selective writes home insurance for single family homes as well as for condominiums, each designed for the specific needs of each type of dwelling.

Similar to the auto program, there is a Selective Edge package available when you insure both home and auto with the company.

On the home insurance side, the Selective Edge package includes:

  • Guaranteed Replacement Cost
  • Deductible Waiver for large losses
  • Water Backup
  • Extended coverage for high value items
  • Non-building structure coverage

Selective also offers renter’s insurance to cover personal property and liability for tenants who don’t need structure coverage.

Flood Insurance is also available through the National Flood Insurance Program.

Additional Products

Umbrella Insurance

Selective writes personal umbrella insurance for extended liability coverage. Policies are available with $1 million up to $5 million in coverage.

Business Insurance

Selective writes a number of different types of commercial insurance policies to cover many different types of business.

Coverage options include:

  • Abuse or Molestation coverage
  • Business owners Policy
  • Business Income and Extra Expenses
  • Commercial Auto
  • Crime/Fidelity
  • Crisis Response
  • Security breaches
  • Electronic Information Systems
  • Employment Practices Liability
  • Commercial Flood
  • General Liability
  • GreenPac Endorsement
  • Identity Theft
  • Inland Marine
  • Miscellaneous Liability
  • Property
  • Surety Bonds
  • Umbrella
  • Worker’s Compensation

Selective Rates

Selective Insurance does not offer online quoting, making it difficult to do a quick rate comparison. Quotes are only available through local agents.

Selective does not present itself as a low-cost company, and they use agents to sell their policies, which means commissions and usually higher rates. Rates can differ greatly, and Selective might be competitive for some drivers and not for others; individuals will need to obtain a quote for fair comparison.

Claims

Selective offers a toll-free 24/7 claims line for calling in claims: 1-866-455-9969. They also have an online form for submitting claims directly through their website, something we expect to see from top companies and that is rare with smaller regional companies.

After claims are submitted, a claims representative will contact the insured within 24 hours. The adjuster will then investigate the incident and look at the coverage on the policy. When the investigation is complete, the insured will receive a letter explaining the final decision on the claim. Settlements will then be paid out and the claim closed.

It is worth noting that Selective now offers a mobile app that includes conveniences such as easy access to claims information, contact information for agents, and an auto-full ability for policy information when filing a claim. Adding an app is a good sign as many companies are now doing so to provide further customer service to their clients.

Selective offers a Collision Care Program including a list of preferred providers that will work directly with the insurance company and guarantee all of their repairs. Policyholders can also choose their own repair shop.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Selective Insurance is not BBB accredited, however, has an A+ rating. There have been only eight complaints against the company in the past three years, four of which have been closed in the past 12 months.

Elsewhere on the Internet complaints are minimal, but there are a few complaints about slow service.

Bottom Line

Selective Insurance offers a basic line of products, but provides very little information on their website. Their rates are unavailable, making it difficult to judge how competitive they might be.  This adds up to a company that is difficult to recommend; most insurance customers will likely find other companies more competitive.

  1. Garbage company.

Never had a policy through this company yet they signed me up and sent me to collections for an account I never had.

Heather Schoenleber is a lying piece of s*$&.

She was supposed to cancel the policy on the 23AUG19 but instead sent it to collections.

Now I’m unable to refinance my house as planned because they have damaged my credit for their mistake.

  2. Another company at my yard space hit my dump truck.

    They have insurance through selective.

I never got a response from Sheril ford, the person assigned to my claim.

I was told to call her if I hadn’t heard from her by the end of the day.

    First red flag.

I called that day. Left a message.

No response. The owner of the company ended up paying me out of pocket.

Still haven’t heard from the claims department. Shady.

      • I finally got my $638 back, but it took quite a while, as well as my threatening Selective Insurance with a lawyer (through my agent)…

I have never dealt with such a fraudulent, dishonest company as this…and ended up with anxiety as well…

That was no fun but have finally gotten rid of it!! Good luck to you!

  3. I have 3 cars and a home all insured by Selective.

A friend of mine who lives in another state had car trouble and needed a car.

I offered to let her borrow mine for 3 weeks until she got her car back.

She has insurance through another company.

She is almost 30 years old, a responsible nurse and someone I have known for a while.

I contacted my agent to make sure it was okay.

My agent told me that ” the insurance follows the car” so I should be good but was going to check with Selective first.

They asked for my friend’s driver’s license number, address of where the car would be parked and even her SS number.

When they saw she had an out of state license, they told me “no.”

I date a man who lives in NC and I live in SC and I borrow his car sometimes even though my license is out of state and he sometimes borrows my car.

He is not insured by Selective but I guess since I am I can’t even let him borrow my car to go get something at the store because he has an out of state license??!!

My friends who are insured by other companies have never heard of this.

I haven’t read anything in my policy about this.

Anything like this should be spelled out in the policy.

So there are going to tell me after the fact if there was an accident??

Also, when I took out my policy 10 years ago, they charged me a bunch.

They said that they go by credit rating and mine was not good.

Now it is but they are still charging me the same amount.

    • I totally agree! I did have both homeowners’ and auto insurance coverage through Selective…..

First, I got rid of the homeowners, as they had “stupid” requests saying that certain things had to be done or they would not renew my policy…..

I had to get rid of all the vines hanging on my black chain link fence, had to climb a super high ladder and “repaint” the edges at the very top (has nothing to do with insurability), plus had to get rid of the grass in between sidewalk cracks…

They were all stupid…..I finally said forget it and went with Travellers.

Now, I’m having major problems with auto insurance…..

it was supposed to be changed from annual payment to monthly payment…..

      I did pay $668 a year…..now, supposedly $71 a month…

They were fast about taking out the $668 (which, by the way, was supposed to be used to pay for part of my new deck)…..

This has been 2 or 3 weeks…I still have NOT gotten that amount refunded…..called/e-mailed my agent 2 or 3 times….

He said I would get a refund check…..going on 3 weeks….still have yet to get the $668.

Do you know, is there anything I can do to get the $$$ back?

Selective is the worst company ever, with very incompetent service…….

Their client rear-ended my daughter’s car.

They want to settle for $4751, the car is worth $6000 to $6500.

They know that I can’t sue them and come out ahead.

So what can I do to put some pressure on their asinine behavior?

Can you say cancel!! I’m just happy the damage was not that significant and can cover the cost.

They remind me of the movie “Rainmaker” where they deny, deny and deny claims until you finally give up. Never ever use these scammers!

  8. I had a retaining wall built by a professional contractor. In only 2 years the wall completely collapsed and almost killed my dog. It took 3 weeks just to get someone at Selective Insurance Group to return the contractor’s call to provide a claim number. In only 3 days and absolutely no assessment of the damage, they determined that a payout will not happen. They couldn’t even tell me by phone. Direct email:

Please be advised that, per review of this policy of Commercial General Liability insurance, we have determined that there is, unfortunately, no coverage available to our insured for the damages at your premises.

    Sincerely,

When I replied to his email requesting WHY they felt it wasn’t covered. Their reply was priceless because they don’t need to tell you why they won’t cover, just that they won’t. Direct email:

I apologize but we cannot disclose the basis of our denial of coverage to our insured or the specific reasons why their policy of contract does not cover this Property Damage loss, however, we are required to notify you that we will be denying coverage to our insured relative to the current Property Damage in this case.

    Sincerely,
    [Redacted]

If you are a contractor then I would avoid these scammers if you are considering commercial insurance. Now I have no choice but to sue the contractor to recover the rebuild cost and the sad part, I like the contractor.

  13. Selective Insurance is probably the most obtuse, least service-oriented company I’ve ever dealt with. I recently neglected to update my auto-pay information with them due to fraudulent activity on my previous payment method (nothing to do with Selective). I was notified that the payment for my automotive policy was not approved by my bank so I went to the Selective website, corrected my auto-pay, paid in full and then received a payment confirmation number.

In reviewing my accounts, I noticed my homeowners policy wasn’t listed as being current. In clicking further I find it was canceled due to non-payment with no cancellation date listed. I contacted my agent who replied with a copy of the cancellation notice dated more than nine months previously. I received no notice by mail, email or phone. My agent presumably didn’t either since she would have contacted me. The mortgagee apparently didn’t either as they would have notified me to obtain insurance or they would do so and bill me. I contacted my agent and asked to have the policy reinstated and let me know how much I owed. Selective would not reinstate the policy and accept payment even though the past nine months were obviously claim-free.

The next day my agent contacts me and says Selective still hasn’t received my automotive policy payment though their representative apparently “did take a long time to look for your payment”. I replied to my agent with a copy of the email that Selective sent me with the payment confirmation number. I have yet to receive a reply to that but no need… I’ve obtained insurance elsewhere and have asked my agent to cancel my automotive policy.

It’s incredible to me that a company could be so irresponsible with a long-standing customer or ANY customer for that matter. Perhaps I should have kept a closer eye on debits to my account but auto-pay is supposed to make monitoring your accounts less time-consuming. I typically look at all of my numbers at the end of the year. Nor does that excuse them for not taking enough care to ensure that a customer is aware. Imagine the loss of your house which you thought was safely insured.

I’ll never deal with Selective again. -Brian Jones

    • I had a very similar experience- canceled without any notice.

Later told it was for failing to fill out audit forms that I never received.

No record of a phone call email or otherwise.

Just canceled without notice- but they continued to withdraw payments for several months after canceling, which allowed me to think everything was fine.

When I went on the website and discovered we were canceled I contacted them and learned that there was nothing I could do to be reinstated.

They sent me a refund check for the months they withdrew payment after the cancellation date.

I later received notices of cancellation- but they were all dated months later than the actual cancellation date.

  14. I have them now. I have never had a claim with them. However, I do find that they are also slow at sending out bills. Mine typically arrive with only 7-10 days to get them paid. Some might see this as an additional source of revenue called “late fees”. I went on vacation 8-6 and returned 8-17. I did not have an invoice when I left but when I returned I had received an invoice and it was already late. Then I got a $27 late fee on a combined home/auto policy and both of these invoices arrived 9-6 and the due date 9-17. So I can tell you when the bill is due….. They drag their feet sending you a premium invoice and then they want your money in 7-10 days or they’ll take some more of it. I’m looking !!!!!

  15. Wow, glad I’m not alone. Was hit by a driver from a company that is insured by Selective. Claims person, [Redacted], took two weeks to get approval for me to get a rental car. Three weeks have gone by and towing company hasn’t heard from her- they are racking up storage fees and are afraid they will get stuck with the damaged car. Took them 4 days post accident to even get back to me- I then realized I needed to get an attorney to protect myself from their incompetence and lack of compassion.
Best advice- stay away from these guys- I would never use them as my insurance company after reading these reviews. Someone should file complaints with insurance commissioner of their respective states.

  16. I was injured at work. I have a full thickness rotator cuff tear, a partial thickness tear and a third tear cannot be ruled out. I also injured the tendon that is connected to my bicep. All this was confirmed through an MRI. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who told me these injuries would not heal on their own. I would definitely need surgery. My injury was 03/09/2018 and as of today 05/22/2018, I have not received an approval for my surgery. I am in pain every day. I have called the company numerous times and each time I was told we only need one more thing and I have had to supply them all the information about my visits, my medical records. I have done all their work for them and still have no answer. I have never in my life been treated this way by any professional or medical company. These people are incompetent and don’t seem to care about my pain/suffering. Wonder if they are sitting around eating Bon Bons and telling jokes. I am appalled at how long I have waited, but refuse to get the surgery through my medical insurance. That’s what they are probably hoping. I don’t see how they even have 3 stars. I would give one.

    • My husband has been having atrocious problems with this company also with workers compensation.

In PA it’s against state laws for any work comp insurance company (no matter where they are based inside or outside PA) to just stop sending a comp check at random without notifying both the worker and the workers lawyer 30 days ahead of time.

Every 6-8 weeks, after receiving a weekly check from them, they just up and decide, without notice by mail or lawyer or phone call, to not continue sending them.

We have gone without groceries or with little food amounts and our basic necessities like gas for car for a week or little over because by the time it takes lawyer to hear back from this company about this issue, almost a full 2 weeks will go by before receiving the missing check and the current owed check.

      They don’t care.

They told me to take my car to a body shop and they would reimburse me for the loss of use of my car. It’s been two weeks and I still do not have my car back. I have not seen a dollar in reimbursement. They will not call me back. I have had to call them over and over, then they finally answer the phone. They act like it’s my fault I was hit. I have had two claims in the last year, one for the auto when someone backed into my car in a parking lot and left without a leaving a note. Selective was great with the claim, fast, understanding and allowed me to get the car fixed very quickly. The other claim on the home policy was for earrings listed on the policy. My wife lost a very special pair of earrings and Selective responded unbelievably fast to my claim. They were very understanding as to how it happened and was very fast with the claim check. I have had many insurance companies over my lifetime, but have never had one more dependable and accurate than Selective. I totally recommend this company.

He came out the next day and worked with the man fixing my house. Selective paid promptly on both claims that I had. I am so suprised on all these negative comments. I have had nothing but great service and prompt attention from selective. Their website is awesome also. My only complaint was that they gave the man fixing my house from the hail damage WAY TO MUCH MONEY! I highly recommend SELECTIVE INSURANCE COMPANY!

His info was at the bottom of an email the “adjuster” had sent me. Also, if there’s a general email for existing claims, a few emails sent to that address might prod them. Or filling out the “contact us” page using “claim questions” option. Several times. https://www.selective.com/contact-us

I had to make myself a pest to a supervisor to get any action. He actually responded. Within a DAY!!

Another thing there’s ways you can save on your insurance coverages call your company and tell them you want to take off collision coverage and keep compressive coverage..they both are $500 deductible and covers the same thing..I have Geico now, first I was paying $109 now I’m only paying $67 on a Full Coverage but run or cross the street whenever you see selective crap coming take care people

    Reply
    • I would suggest you read your policy form or ask your Geico representative to explain Comprehensive vs. Collision coverage, as they are not the same thing, that is why your premium went down. Collision covers damage to your vehicle when you “collide” with something (other than animal, i.e. another vehicle in a car accident). Comprehensive covers damage to your vehicle if damaged by something “other than collision” (i.e. hit or hit by an animal, hail damage, a tree or anything else falls on your vehicle, flying debris damaging your windshield, flood, etc.). Without Comprehensive coverage you do not have coverage for any of these (and more). There is a reason why your premium went down when you deleted Comprehensive coverage.

The plumber (who has Selective Insurance) worked on the water heater in the condo above ours as well as checked the toilet in the guest bathroom to make sure everything was working properly. The next morning came and there was water dripping through our guest bathroom ceiling through the light fixture from her toilet upstairs that was now leaking through the handle. Keep in mind that the tenant upstairs never uses that bathroom and the plumber was the only person who touched the toilet. Now Selective Insurance is saying that it is not his fault and they won’t cover the claim. To say that I am extremely upset with them is an understatement…

The other parties insurance company had the police report within 2 weeks of the accident. It has now been almost 6 weeks and I have yet to receive a copy of the report. I have followed up with my claim rep weekly and keep getting the run around that he does not have it. Now he doesn’t even response to my inquiries regarding it. I finally took it upon myself to do his job and get my hands on a copy of the report. If getting a police report takes so long I can’t imagine how long it will take for them to get my deductible back! Not impressed with the service whatsoever. I will be shopping around.

Damage was done to my home by the construction company and a claim has been put in to Selective. I’ve been getting nothing but a run around with them to get my home repaired. It’s been four weeks and every week the tell me by the end of the week they will have an answer in regards to the claim. They don’t return phone calls or emails in a timely manner. When I do talk with the adjuster he is belligerent.

        • I am going through that right now. Someone completed my work on my home 7 months ago. I am having problems with the bathroom remodeling and now they are saying my invoice is not legit. I didn’t make all the checks out to the company, I paid her employees and her partner. It is just a bunch of foolishness. So sad that you have insurance companies of this low morale. They don’t care about the insured or the client. They need to go out of business. No one should use them. I have never felt so insulted in my life by an insurance company.

        • Claim Service is awful. We were rear-ended and Selective has treated us like criminals for filing a claim. Please don’t put yourself through the aggravation that will surely follow “Selecting” this company.

  29. Driving down the highway and one of the Selective insurers US LAWN was throwing gravel and rock off the truck and shattered my windshield, placed a claim and was told by them that the claim was denied even tho the driver was cited for failure to secure the load by the highway patrol. The worse part is a claim idiot lied about my statement to her. [Redacted]

  30. Selective Insurance has been a nightmare to process my claim for hail damage. The adjuster and manager do not return phone calls. The have done everything to not process my claim. After
they did, it was not accurate. I will not renew my auto and home policy with them.

    • I can agree with this. Had hail and wind damage 2 weeks ago…my neighbors already have their properties fixed and Selective is just now getting around to even looking at my property…no communication and they really don’t care about their customers. Just collect money from you.

  31. I was hit by someone who was insured by Selective Insurance and nothing has been done yet. It’s been three weeks already! They claimed to still not have a copy of the accident report. I faxed it to my insurance company over a week ago. They faxed sent a copy to Selective for me and nothing. Nobody has looked at my car and because of their lack of effort, I can’t get a rental.

I have no trust in this company and they are now showing themselves in a good light right now with their lack of contact and effort to deal with this claim.

    • I was hit in the rear by a selective ins customer it’s been three weeks now and they have not done anything. They are telling us that trying to accept responsibility. My car has been in the shop for three weeks now ,with no work being done to it. This seems to be the way they do business

  32. Selective insurance is the worst insurance company ever especially there claims specialist.. In February the furnace caught on fire in my restaurant and it was so cold so one of the pipes burst and cause lots of water damage in the ceiling, walls, pos system etc, and the claim specialist asked for proof that we put the walls, ceilings, computers equipments .. That’s so stupid who else would do it ? our neighbors? Or someone donate it ?
Well my advice to everyone insured with them to switch before anything happens and you have to make a claim because it’s going to take for ever and they not gonna pay enough to replace or to fix things

    • I am currently dealing with a similar situation with Selective. I have been insured with them for many years and have not had an issue, however, that is only because they only have problems paying claims not collecting premiums. I had a flood in my retail store 9 weeks ago due to a malfunctioning water heater. 5000 gallons of water! They have not paid a dime yet. They kept trying to verify that fixtures and samples were purchased by me despite having a replacement policy and providing invoices for original al purchases, replacement estimates from the manufacturer, lease agreements, statements of loss (notarized), testimony from 3rd party sales reps, etc. Selective adjuster that is assigned the case has still never visited. Unbelievable and criminal in my opinion.

    • I agree wholeheartedly! Been involved in a suit for almost 3 years, carried this supposed coverage, paid promptly and they have worked to deny the claim in some very deviate ways.
