Arkansas-based American Underwriters Insurance Company (AUIC) offers both standard and non-standard auto insurance policies across the state. They assist customers who have difficulty obtaining auto insurance elsewhere.

About American Underwriters

AUIC is based out of Conway, Arkansas, and offers auto insurance to Arkansas drivers through agents in all counties across the state. The company operates as part of Crum & Forster, which is in turn owned by Fairfax Holding Company. AUIC is one of several Crum & Forster specialty insurance companies.

Very little information is available regarding the history of AUIC or its operations. The company does not have its own website and is instead listed on the Crum & Forster website, although it does appear to operate as a separate company.

Auto policies available from AUIC include standard package auto insurance and custom, or nonstandard, auto. This company appears to be the type to which a driver is referred by an agent when they are having trouble getting coverage elsewhere.

American Underwriters Products

Based on the vague definitions offered online of the company’s website, there are two types of auto insurance offered by AUIC.

Standard auto insurance is offered to customers with a good driving record and no lapse in coverage over the past 12 months. There is no further information available as to what type of coverage or discounts are offered.

Custom auto insurance is what is better known as non-standard or high-risk. This policy is designed for customers who have problems on their driving record, have had lapses in insurance, have poor credit, or have other issues that disqualify them from a standard policy. Again, details on the coverage are not offered.

American Underwriters Rates

Unsurprisingly, there is not an online quoting system offered for this company. The limited information on the website is clearly directed at agents, and not at potential customers.

This seems to be a company to which an agent will direct customers who are having trouble obtaining coverage elsewhere. As a result, their rates are unlikely to be competitive with most standard car insurance companies.

Claims

We were unable to find specific information offered for claims on AUIC policies, although the Crum & Forster website does have a comprehensive claims section. While it seems likely that AUIC claims would be filed using this system, the website does not make that clear.

There is a list of phone numbers and email addresses on the claims reporting page. The site also indicates that claims can be filed online, this requires a login to the secure area of the site. Directions are offered for obtaining a username and password in order to login.

Forms can also be obtained in PDF format to print and fill out.

The Crum & Forster site indicates that they contact the insured within one business day of the filing, and attempt to resolve auto claims quickly. The company has a direct repair network where the fastest and simplest claims processing can be handled. Again, AUIC is not named directly in the claims information, so we are forced to assume the process is the same for all Crum & Forster companies.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Consumer information on AUIC is difficult to find. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) does not have a file for the company. Parent company Crum & Forster has two BBB files, one for a location in Boston and the other in Morristown, NJ. The two files both have an A+ rating.

We found one Google review for AUIC, a very basic positive review. Aside from this, we were unable to find other customer reviews, either positive or negative, for this company.

The Bottom Line

American Underwriters is the type of insurance company to which an agent generally refers people when options are limited. It’s unlikely that this company will make its way onto the list for the average auto insurance customer. With very little information available, it is difficult to form a solid opinion on this company.
