Farm Family Insurance is a regional insurer in the Northeast and Atlantic states offering a range of property and casualty insurance. They offer coverage for both personal and business interests.

About Farm Family

Headquartered in Glenmont, NY, Farm Family has been in operation since 1950. Their focus is mostly on rural and suburban customers, offering products that meet the needs of these particular communities, such as agribusiness, country estate, and equine insurance.

Farm Family is a subsidiary of American National Insurance Company, which acquired them in 2001. They operate in the Northeast and Great Atlantic region of the United States, selling their products through local agents.

Farm Family Products

Farm Family offers a good range of products, including the big three in personal insurance – auto insurance, home insurance, and life insurance – and a variety of business and specialty policies. The website offers only a basic overview of the policies available and directs customers to contact an agent for details.

Auto Insurance

Farm Family offers comprehensive auto insurance with all of the legal requirements covered as well as the most common options for add-on coverage. Options include full coverage (comprehensive coverage and collision coverage), towing and labor, and rental reimbursement coverage.

Home Insurance

The Farm Family Home Safe and Sound is the standard homeowner’s package that covers the structure, outbuildings, personal property, and liability. It is also available in three levels of the Signature Series. These levels are Silver, Gold, and Platinum, each offering an increased level of coverage. Package policies can be personalized with endorsements for things like identity theft, increased limits on valuable items, and more.

Farm Family also offers policies specifically designed for the needs of renters and for condo owners, with more emphasis on personal property and liability.

Life Insurance

Farm Family offers several types of life insurance.

Their Signature term life insurance has term lengths ranging from 10 to 30 years. Policies are renewable and convertible. They also offer an Annual Renewable Term policy that can be renewed every year as needed.

They also have a selection of whole life insurance with various payment terms. The Paid Up at 65 or Paid Up at 95 plans offer permanent coverage with different premium amounts that determine when the policy is paid in full. Both also have cash accumulation accounts. There is also a Paid Up at 100 plan option. Finally, there is a single premium whole life plan in which a one-time premium payment is made and the policy is then considered paid up.

Farm Family also has a range of annuity options to create a steady income for retirement. The options are Single Premium Deferred, Single Premium Immediate, and Flexible Premium Deferred.

Business Insurance

Farm Family writes coverage for a number of different business needs. Options include:

Specialty Coverage

Among the specialty policies offered by Farm Family are Country Estate insurance, which is a specific type of homeowner’s coverage designed for larger properties, collector car insurance, and recreational vehicles including boats, motorcycles, and RVs.

Farm Family offers online quoting for standard and classic car coverage. The quoting system requires a great deal of personal information, which may put some insurance customers off from using it.

Because Farm Family does not offer coverage in our sample rate area, we are unable to provide a rate comparison to other companies. However, as an agent-based insurer in a small regional area, we would not expect them to compete on premiums alone. Companies like Farm Family tend to rely on the promise of excellent, personal service to add value to insurance premiums that are often a bit higher than the national direct competitors.

Farm Family does not offer online claims reporting, which is not surprising for this type of company, although with online quoting we do often see that claims are also available.

There is a 24-hour claims filing line that can be used for most types of policy, while Worker’s Comp and life insurance have their own claims lines.

The website does not offer much in the way of detail regarding claims process, aside from promising fast, fair settling of claims.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) lists this company as United Farm Family Insurance, which causes some confusion in any effort to find their file. There are several other pages under the name Farm Family, but this record matches the mailing address on the “Contact Us” page of the Farm Family website. The company has an A+ rating with only one complaint on file in the past three years. Other Farm Family pages may have complaints, but appear to be related to agencies rather than the insurance company directly.

Farm Family does not appear on any of the major review sites, which is not uncommon for a smaller, regional insurance company. Overall, we did not find anything that would raise a red flag over the company’s reputation.

The Bottom Line

Farm Family is the kind of local company that will interest those who prefer a personal touch to their insurance. They are unlikely to compete dollar for dollar on rates but offer a promise of better customer service and individual attention. They cover most common insurance needs, making their agents a one-stop shop for personal and even business coverage. For those in their service area, they are well worth a closer look.

WE ARE HOMELESS (I myself, my husband and two daughters 4yrs and 1 yrs.) due to a hot water leak in our crawlspace, in our home which is a balloon structure is deemed unlivable from the mass amounts of steam causing mold on the entire interior walls and attic.

We are left homeless since November and abandoned by insurance who wouldn’t help provide a safe living environment or even any storage for our contents.

I Marissa Spitzer have a claim with Farm and Family Insurance Co. to remediate the home, which has been completely drawn out and falsely represented.

We have substantial amounts of proof from the restoration company, a mold report showing 600k plus new spores growing by the day, an environmental scientist/engineer that the mold was 100 percent caused by the hot water heater.

Our fine print in our policy shows coverage’s for mold in the event of water damage.

It has been to farm and family’s best interest to do their best and be sneaky to prove whatever otherwise!

We are left with no home and abandoned by insurance! This is NOT the company to trust with your home!
