Tennessee-based Hauler’s Insurance Company, Inc. (HICI) specializes in personal and commercial auto insurance. They sell their products through agents across seven mostly Southern states.

What is Haulers Insurance?

HICI was founded in 1986 and has its headquarters in Columbia, TN. In 2008 the company was acquired by Shelter Insurance Group and now operates as a subsidiary. Hauler’s products are available in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Indiana, Missouri, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Products are sold only through local independent agents, with 700 insurance agents offering Hauler’s products in the seven states where they are licensed. The company’s business is clearly very agent-oriented, with a very basic and dated website that provides little to no information about the company or its products.

HICI sells only auto insurance, and no other products are mentioned on the website.

Is HICH Auto Insurance Any Good?

As previously mentioned, HICI has a very bare-bones website. The website does not offer information about their auto insurance products or coverage at all.

The only information given is that both personal and commercial auto is offered. Visitors to the website can use an agent locator in order to contact someone for information on products. It is very clear from the website setup that HICI does not see much of its business come in via online searches.

Are the Company’s Rates Competitive?

Not at all surprising given the lack of any product information is the lack of online quoting. Customers will need to contact a local agent in order to obtain rate quotes.

Small companies operating through local agents rarely compete with the rates of major direct buy companies like Geico; instead, they often rely on reputation and customer service to provide value to customers.

How Are Claims Handled?

There is a toll-free claim reporting line listed on the Haulers website, however, there is not an indication as to whether or not it is staffed 24/7. A separate toll-free line is also offered for claims questions, as well as yet another customer service line that is listed as having business hours, which seems to indicate that the reporting line may be open 24 hours – we are unable to confirm that, however.

The website does not offer an online claim reporting option, but there is an area for customers to log into their accounts. It is possible that some claims services are offered to customers once they have logged in.

Are the Ratings and Consumer Reviews About the Company Positive?

Haulers Insurance has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) at the time of this review, and it has been accredited since 2007. We found a total of nine complaints on file in the past three years, which is low for a reasonably sized regional company. Two complaints were closed in the past 12 months.

We found eight reviews on Google for the company, with an overall rating of 2.8 stars. The negative claims cite difficulty contacting the company and claims issues. Of the positive reviews, one is from an employee and the others do not provide any solid information.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Overall, there is not enough information available in regards to HICI to form a clear opinion. This company may appeal to those who prefer to work with an agent and like a smaller, regional insurance company. It is clear from the limitations of the company website that this is the way they prefer to bring in business as well, which might make them a good match for the right customer.
