North Carolina-based Discovery Insurance serves the non-standard auto insurance market across the state. The focus solely on auto and sell products through a network of agents.

About Discovery Insurance

Discovery Insurance Company was founded in 1993 in Kinston, North Carolina, where their headquarters remains today. They focus on the non-standard insurance market, providing auto insurance coverage to high-risk drivers who have been turned down by standard insurers for a variety of reasons. These include a problematic driving record, major violation resulting in the need for an SR-22, bad credit, and more.

Discovery products are sold through independent agents, and policies are available throughout North Carolina. As of the time of this review, there is no indication that the company plans to expand to other states.

Discovery’s website is very bare bones, containing basic information; they are likely a company that sees most new business through agents and not website visitors.

Discovery Auto Products

Discovery does not offer much information about their auto insurance policies on the website. There is a basic overview of how auto insurance works and a glossary of terms, but no specifics in regards to what to expect from a Discovery policy.

Discovery writes insurance for the non-standard market, which means they likely write a lot of basic liability policies to meet state legal requirements. They also offer higher liability limits and optional coverage that can be added to the policy.

Discovery only insures personal autos and does not offer motorcycle insurance.

Although Discovery has a setup on their website for obtaining a quote online, it is not functional. The website states that this option will be available in the future, but currently quotes are only available by contacting an agent. Based on our previous review of Discovery, this has been the case for more than a year, which indicates they have not made much effort to get the quote function up and running.

The website does have an agent search function using a zip code.

As a non-standard insurer, we do not expect that Discovery’s rates will compare to those offered by standard insurance companies.

Discovery has more information in the claims section of the website than any other section.

The company does have online claims reporting form easily accessible on the website. A separate form is available for a glass-only claim.

There is also a toll-free number to report a claim directly over the phone. The site does not say whether or not the line is available 24/7.

There is a link to track an existing claim, but that area is currently not functional; this is the second area of the site where the company appears to be behind on getting things working. Again it appears to reflect a lack of interest in web-based marketing.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Discovery Insurance has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are only four complaints on file in the past three years. There are no complaints closed in the past 12 months.

We found 68 Google reviews of this company with an overall 3.7-star rating out of 5. It is very important to note that a look through the reviews found multiple 5-star ratings not from customers, but from agents that sell Discovery products. This has the effect of skewing the overall rating to make it appear that more customers rated them highly. In fact, it appears that there are more negative reviews from customers than there are positive ones. Repeated complaints refer to poor customer service and difficulty with claims.

The company’s Facebook page has 12 reviews, with an overall 2.7-star rating. Similar to the other reviews, we found that the positive reviews appear to come mainly from agents who work with Discovery, while the actual consumer reviews are universally negative.

Discovery’s ratings are a good reminder that it is always worth reading through the reviews rather than basing an opinion on the overall star rating. In this case, agents seem to have artificially bumped up the company in a way that does not seem to reflect the actual customer experience.

The Bottom Line

If you are in need of non-standard auto insurance in North Carolina, Discovery might be worth investigating. Finding a good value in non-standard insurance is difficult, as is finding a company with a really solid reputation. Our look at the company did raise some concerns in regards to claims service, which is what really matters when it comes to an insurance company. Agents who work with this company, however, do seem to hold it in very high regard and go out of their way to praise it. While we would prefer to see happy customers, that does carry some weight.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. Aimee Loder did a great job.

  2. Discovery Insurance is HORRIBLE. I am currently going through a collision claim with them right now and they continue to give me the runaround. All I am trying to get right now is a rental car and they are trying everything in their power to not pay for it (although I have full coverage). I will be switching insurance companies as soon as possible. NEVER use Discovery Insurance.

  3. I called in many times to change my address on my policy and I’ve gotten hung up on every time. This is so unprofessional.

  4. If you have an accident with a Discovery insured person and they are at fault, good luck. I was rear-ended at a dead stop at a red light. In NC it’s an open and shut case, guilty regardless of road conditions, weather, etc.
State Farm fixed my truck and will seek reimbursement from Discovery.
I’ve personally had to get involved to recover a $500 deductible out of pocket.
I personally faxed the estimate and photos of my truck 3 times and they denied receiving this 3 times. My $500 deductible reimbursement is 10 weeks in the waiting with no idea when I’ll be reimbursed. They provide high-cost coverage to high-risk drivers regardless of their history and character. Of course, he never reported the accident to Discovery. This is why insurance is so expensive for good drivers, part of our premiums go to the NC Insurance Commission so they can provide coverage to low lives. The Commission is so political that insurance companies basically own them. Even seen a rate hike request denied?

  5. I wouldn’t recommend this insurance company to anyone. They are very unorganized. I agreed for this company to complete payroll decductions biweekly for my payments. From March until September the payments came out as we agreed, but then they stopped. I called every two weeks to ask if I needed to make a payment and I was told “No, nothing is due”. So, in November I decided to switch companies. Then last week, in February, they started to deduct payments from my payroll check again stating I owed them $1900.00 and that no deductions were make from March until November. Because the incompetent reps were not documenting when I was calling to try to make the payments I was informed by the VP that the money was due. I have a child with leukemia, which puts a financial burden on my family enough. Now because of their mistakes I will be lossing $400 monthly from my pay check. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T TRUST THIS COMPANY!!!

  6. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! I hope no one has to deal with them that is not insured with them. My husband was hit 2 years ago by a drunk driver that totalled his vehicle and he was in the hospital (no major injuries) we are still 2 years later fighting the drunk guys insurance (discovery) we have called every Tuesday since the accident and never not once spoke to anyone over the phone it’s all by email. Run run run.

  7. I’ve had a claim #[Redacted] pending for your insurance agent, [Redacted] (who has yet given me his last name-VERY UNPROFESSIONAL), for a month. He claims he is unable to contact his client to confirm the damage his client did to my Jeep Grand Cherokee ( approx 1800).

    • I have had same problem, keep telling me got to get up with driver of other vehicle to whom HlT my vehicle. Poor insurance company to do business with.

      • I’m sorry to hear that. My insurance company is still trying to get my $500.00 deductable from them. I’ve even been to the local office and talked with the local rep. This company is full of crooks as far as I’m concerned. Discovery is even afraid to contact me. Also they local reps can’t get off their butts and go see the bum who hit me or send an adjuster to either of our vehicles. This company will get poor reviews in as many places as possible (Facebook will be one)!!!!

        • I have had the same issue the aduster never came to see my car after there client hit car by running over the double yellow line and smashing my side mirror, this was on the 4th of July the adjuster [Redacted] never return calls and is useless to even talk to they are the worst,I am call the bbb they are a total scam insurance company.
