Part of a trio of companies under the United Equitable Group banner, United Equitable Insurance Company is a property & casualty insurer in Illinois. They specialize in non-standard auto insurance.

United Equitable offers very little in the way of information about either the company or its products on the website, which is basic and limited. The company is connected with Lakeshore Finance and American Heartland Insurance as part of the same group.

The company website is set up entirely for either existing customers needing to pay a bill or make a claim, or for agents and prospective agents. It is clear from this lack of new client information that this company does not bring in new business very often through their website.

Even the United Equitable Group page has very little information, listing the three companies they own and redirecting visitors off to the only slightly more useful company pages.

From further digging, it became clear that United Equitable writes non-standard auto insurance, serving the high-risk market. They appear to sell their products exclusively through independent agents, which is fairly common for non-standard insurers. The company is based in Skokie, Illinois.

Due to the lack of information for this company, it is not surprising we had a difficult time finding anything useful whatsoever in terms of what products they offer. In order to determine anything, we combed through the policy terms document that is one of many documents that can be downloaded on the website and the only place that any details on coverage and endorsements can be found. This document is not meant to be a source of policy information for those in the process of shopping for coverage, and it is complex and detailed, written in legal language not intended for the average insurance shopper to read.

The policy terms indicate a fairly basic insurance policy offering liability as well as the most common optional coverage such as comprehensive coverage and collision coverage.

Other options include a non-owner endorsement, rental reimbursement, legal expense reimbursement, automobile loss payable endorsement, roadside assistance, and something called Autovisor.

Autovisor is an endorsement that provides coverage for mechanical repairs to a vehicle; it is essentially a mechanical breakdown endorsement. It covers mechanical problems that are not related to an accident.

This is an unusual endorsement for any insurance company, but particularly for a small, non-standard insurance company.


In keeping with the lack of marketing-focused information on the website, United Equitable does not offer online quoting as an option nor do they provide rate information on their website.

As a non-standard insurer, we would not expect this company to compete with any of the standard insurance companies; non-standard rates should only be compared with other non-standard companies. High-risk drivers that need to get coverage from a non-standard company typically pay higher rates than those that qualify for standard, so it is unlikely that United Equitable is particularly competitive.

Some of the complaints we read as part of this review have referred to this company as “cheap” and “low cost”, however, so they must be a cheap option for some drivers. That said, cheap is only worth it if the company pays claims, and we will look at that issue further along in this review.


The claims section of the website seems to be the only area that contains any useful information.

Claims can be filed online or over the phone, although the toll-free claims line is only available during business hours. Those hours are listed as Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., presumably Central Time.

Claims forms are also available for download on the website.

There is no indication as to whether this company uses a preferred repair shop network and no further information on the claims process available.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

United Equitable has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which is the lowest possible score and one we do not see very often. The F rating is given for the 72 complaints that have been filed against the company, 44 of which they did not respond to at all and two of which were never closed.

The 56 reviews on Google are all negative and repeat the same complaints; the company does not pay claims, does not communicate, and has poor customer service when it can be reached at all.

The 20 negative reviews on Yelp reflect the same complaints. We were unable to find anything to redeem this company’s reputation.

The Bottom Line

The non-standard market can be difficult, but there are insurers out there with a much better reputation and a customer-focused approach that United Equitable lacks. The repeated complaints citing the same issues, F-rating from the BBB, and utter lack of information from the company itself leads us to recommend looking elsewhere for your car insurance.

  1. *******PLEASE HELP!!!!!

    This company is a FRAUD and they should not be in business.

    They have denied my son’s claim and gave some ridiculous reason.

    They are not helpful, I’ve not heard 1 good thing about this company, in fact, it has been the opposite.

    I’ve reported them with the BBB. but I see others have as well.

    Is there anyone that has contacted a lawyer to have any luck with your claims.

    They need to be sued.. are there any lawyers on here.

      Just was told my claim was denied because their member who was CLEARLY at fault didn’t complete his paperwork.

      WTF? so I can’t get my vehicle repaired because this a@#hole isn’t cooperating?? How is that possible?

      I’ve contacted a few criminal attys I know & asked for referrals in this kind of situation.

      I will post to this page/site once I find a law firm to sue their @$$es!!

  2. The worst insurance ever they totaled out my car about two months ago they stop communicating as of April 2nd.

    I am reporting them to Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB),(filing a complaint online and they must respond to them within 30 days.

    I am also sending a letter to channel seven news their investigation team.

    This is ridiculous they have not paid out my credit rating was great but now it is damaged.

    My name is Michael Johnson. I am a current customer of United Equitable insurance.
    I am sending this message today based on the decision the adjuster has made in regards to my claim [redacted]. I have been a customer since 2016. I was directed to the company from a peer of mine that currently uses Chicago Consumer insurance. I answered some questions online, was provided a quote for full coverage and an option to purchase. At the time I purchased my insurance I included myself and my wife. The ONLY possible drivers in the house are my wife and she has no intentions on driving my car because it was mainly for work.
    I was involved in an accident on December 16th, 2018. The car was towed. I made sure I stayed in touch with your insurance of the status and there were no problems. The car was picked up and delivered to Auto body tech in [Redacted]. I continued to call to get the status. Sometimes before work, while at work or anytime I can find where I will have 15 to 20 minutes hold because that’s how long it takes for someone to answer the phone. I was advised the car was considered totaled and the account was being reviewed. Then last week I was advised my son was not on the insurance and this was an issue that needed to be addressed and a letter was mailed. I immediately provided the representative my son’s ID number because he does not have nor has ever had a license, she added the information to what she needed to and disconnected the call.
    I was never advised my son was an issue at any time being a customer
    My son was diagnosed with a seizure disorder at 3 years old. Which currently we have been blessed that he has not had any seizures, so we attempt to provide a normal life for him
    My son currently has a ventricular shunt that drains spinal fluid from his brain into his stomach to prevent spinal fluid from building up and can possibly be deadly
    My son is not a driver, does not have a license
    After multiple conversations with my son and wife we allowed him to get a driving permit based on his progress.
    His driving practices are done with his mom or grandmother
    I never received the letter
    I called yesterday to get a progress report on the status of the claim. Once again I was on hold for 15 minutes, the rep answered the phone, only to ask me to hold for another 18 minutes. The reps then returned back to the phone only to confirm my information all over again as if she forgot I was on the phone. She then continues to advise me that due to a driving ticket in Kentucky I was given in 2015 and my son not being documented as only insurance my claim will not be honored and another letter will be issued. I attempted to ask some questions to get a better understanding, but the rep was getting frustrated. I remained respectful, but that did not help the situation because I was advised [Redacted] ( who I found to be known as [Reddacted]) is the adjuster and if I can’t speak with him, I can speak with [Redacted] and was abruptly transferred to her voicemail. I left 2 messages on her voicemail, with no calls back. At this point I am outraged. I was worried about this happening due to the reviews online, but my wife told me to wait and be patient. I cannot believe this treatment. I currently do not have a car, getting to work, doctors appointments and my father responsibilities however I can, but I am paying for car insurance. I will not stand for this because I can see how this makes money for you your company and I’m left without and expected to continue to pay month over month.

        I’m currently insured by them and had an accident.

        I wasn’t at fault, which doesn’t matter.

        This is the third week and when I contact them I received the same treatment.

        I now have to submit my 2018 tax returns because they say I have high mileage.

        I really feel this is a serious breach of the privacy act.

        I reside in Illinois close to Chicago.

        I really would love to involved in taking this company down.

  4. This is the worst and unprofessional insurance in Illinois. I had an accident, they didn’t cover me and just cancel my policy. They don’t answer my calls to explain me why.

  5. This is the worst insurance company in Illinois. Please don’t get them. I was in an accident with thier policy holder. It was her fault. It happen July of this year and I am still waiting on them to honor my claim. They keep telling me that they are waiting on more information from thier client. I see that the Better Business Bureau has rated them For. Why are they still in business. Can the state do something about them. They are taking money from thier clients, but are not paying claims that are against thier client. I think as a consumer that we need to start protesting to our representative about companies like this.

  6. This is the most unprofessional, ignorant, useless insurance company I’ve ever in countered. They refused to pay for storage and towing fees, due to an accident by that THEIR insured caused. They did not seem considered about my well being, or taking care of my claim against their insured. Stay the hell away from this company! There a wanna be insurance company, a [redacted]!!
