A regional insurer serving five states primarily in the Northwest, Mutual of Enumclaw started as a small farm insurance company and has since grown to be one of the larger insurers in Washington State. They continue to offer farm coverage, but today also provide auto, home, business, and more.

Mutual of Enumclaw Summary

Founded in its namesake town of Enumclaw, Washington in 1898 as the Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Company, Mutual of Enumclaw was created to provide protection for farms and other buildings in the small town. By 1963 the company had expanded to Oregon and Idaho, offering personal insurance to residents across three states. The name change to Mutual of Enumclaw took place in 1966.

In 2002, they expanded into Utah, and then Arizona in 2014. Policies are sold through independent agents across all five states. Mutual of Enumclaw remains a mutual company, which means that it is owned by the policyholders and not by shareholders. However, this ownership right didn’t extend to all parts of the company, this article explained the company’s plans to establish domicile in Oregon in order to extend mutuality to customers here. The plan was later approved.

Mutual of Enumclaw writes auto insurance, home insurance, commercial policies, boat insurance, and farm insurance. They are a relatively small company on the national level, but 12th largest in Washington.

Insurance Products

Mutual of Enumclaw writes the basics of personal insurance as well as commercial products.

Auto Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw writes car insurance that includes all of the basics of coverage as well as common options. This includes a towing and roadside assistance option.

The company also offers the option to extend coverage to a variety of specialty vehicles under the auto program. This includes motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and trailers.

The website does not offer a lot in the way of detail regarding the policy itself or coverage options, directing customers to an agent for more information.

Home Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw writes home insurance that covers structures, personal property, and liability. They write several types of home coverage:

  • Standard homeowners
  • Condominiums
  • Rental properties
  • Second and seasonal homes

Each policy is designed to cover the specific needs of that type of home. Mutual of Enumclaw offers several add-on options for their home policies, including equipment breakdown coverage.

Additional Products

Boat Insurance

Coverage is offered for various types of boats and includes trailer and equipment coverage, liability, and coverage for the boat itself. Towing assistance can also be added this type of policy.

Business Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw offers coverage for small businesses as well as medium-sized and large companies. Their commercial policy offerings include:

It is good to note that the company also tailors package policies to cover the needs of specific industries.

Farm Insurance

Mutual of Enumclaw’s roots are in farm insurance, so its no surprise that they still have a strong presence in this area. They write coverage for farms, ranches, and orchards, both family-run and commercial.

Coverage includes farm package policies, farm auto, and specific coverage for operations such as dairy farms and wineries/vineyards.

Mutual of Enumclaw Rates

Mutual of Enumclaw sells insurance solely through agents and does not currently offer online quoting. Instead, the customer is directed to a local agent to obtain a quote.

As a result, we are unable to obtain a comparison quote. As an agent-driven company, Mutual of Enumclaw is likely to have higher rates than direct-buy insurance companies in order to make up for the required agent commissions. The company is not one that advertises themselves as being low-cost or budget, so we would not expect to see the lowest rates here. Companies such as Mutual of Enumclaw generally try to make higher premiums worthwhile by offering better customer service.

Claims

Mutual of Enumclaw is ahead of some of its competitors when it comes to how claims can be filed.

Claims can be filed 24/7 by phone at 1-877-425-2580.

They can also be filed online, although this requires a policyholder login to gain account access.

Finally, the company has a mobile app through which claims can be filed on the go. This is something most often seen with larger insurance companies, and is less common with small, regional insurers. This use of technology sets Mutual of Enumclaw apart from competitors.

Mutual of Enumclaw’s website does offer a page that informs the client of their claims service and general procedure. This is a great information for a company to have as it gives customers an idea of what they can expect from their insurance company.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Mutual of Enumclaw has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, although they are not accredited. There are only nine complaints filed against the company in the past three years, one of which was closed in the past 12 months. This is a very low number of complaints for a fairly good-sized regional insurer.

There are a few mixed reviews throughout the internet, including some very positive ones. The negative reviews seem to center on slow response to claims, however, there aren’t enough of these complaints to really raise a red flag about this company.

Overall, there are few complaints and nothing that would lead to concern, leaving Mutual of Enumclaw with a pretty good reputation.

Bottom Line

If you live in one of the company’s five service states and do not mind going through an agent to obtain a quote, Mutual of Enumclaw may be worth a look. With a solid lineup of personal insurance basics and a good reputation, the company has the potential to be a contender. They’re unlikely to be competitive with major direct buy insurance companies, so for those who consider price the top factor in an insurance purchase, Mutual of Enumclaw may not make the list. For those who want a good balance of customer service and price, they are likely worth obtaining a quote to compare to similar companies.

  1. I never thought I would have to complain about MOE until today.

We received notification that they will not be renewing our homeowner’s insurance after we’ve been with them for 16 years!

We’ve never filed a claim. Their reasoning is that we are in a wildland area. We are 20 minutes away from Sandpoint, ID.

Our area is no different than most of the Pacific Northwest which is their area of coverage.

Their reasoning is completely unfounded and has left us hanging in the wind. Shame on you MOE!

  2. I have been a Mutual of Enumclaw customer for decades now through debilitating car accidents and more. Service has always been great.

Call backs are timely and one gets a feeling that they listen unlike a “hot-line” call to an agent in New York… experienced this first-hand recently when a friend filed a claim and got what sounded like a robot on the other end of the phone.

This doesn’t happen, ever, at MOE. I like the small town feel about the company.

  3. S.T.A.Y. A.W.A.Y.! This company is the epitome of incompetence and dishonesty – rips off insured, sides against insured EVEN WHEN THE OPPOSING INSURANCE ADJUSTER AGREES WE ARE NOT AT FAULT. Not enough negatives in the English language to adequately express all the applicable attributes. SHAME ON THEM.

  4. I was just told that MOE management has been taken over by people from Allstate and Farmers and that many of MOE’s long-time employees have left because of the change in corporate culture. Do you know if this is true?

  5. Hello

I am having difficulty reaching my adjuster with regards to a fire suffered May 2016. There are a number of things that need to be done or replaced after the fire that have yet to be addressed. I have repeatedly emailed and textd agent but he does not respond. Very frustrating since he has been very helpful on 90% of the damage coverage. Do you have any suggestion on how I could get his attention, short of retaining counsel?

    Thank you.

  6. We had MOE home owners insurance until 5 years ago. We had a wild fire on our 50 acres and I hadn’t had time to call MOE. An adjuster was on top of things and called me. They insured the trees on the property. Something most companies don’t do. We had a check within a couple of weeks. I have been insured by USAA for 58 years but it is not the same company it used to be. I will be getting a quote from MOE and if they are competitive will switch my insurance.

  7. We have been with MEI for 7 1/2 yrs and are now shopping for a new insurance company mainly because there never is a good drivers discount or loyalty discount and maybe this is something that has gone by the wayside, all we get is a hike in the premium every year and told that it’s do to the economy, but what I have found is we are really getting dinged for our car insurance and possibly the home owners also, I will be calling my agent tomorrow to ask him about something I learned on our policy and if I can’t get the right answer we will be parting our ways.

  8. After reading your report I get the feeling you don’t care for Mutual of Enumclaw for a single family home….the insurance company has bought to my attention I like their quote a lot but after reading our report I am having second thoughts….should I or shouldn’t I?????? Helen Ellis

    • Hi Helen,

If you like the quote you received, by all means proceed. I do not think Mutual of Enumclaw is bad by any means, they are just more often suited well for farmers. If are happy with their quote for your single family home, I don’t see any reason to not give them a shot.

      Best,

      • Not sure how I stumbled upon this thread?

Your comment regarding Mutual of Enumclaw (MOE) being better suited for Farmers, not for a single family home, is simply not true. MOE’s HO5 homeowners policy is one of the best policies available. Combined with their top rated claims service makes them a great value. If you fit their preferred profile (well kept property, stable employment, good credit) then this is a company you should consider.

FYI-I have been an insurance agent for 24 years. As an independent agent, I represent MOE & numerous other companies.

        Patrick
