Key Insurance Company is a Kansas-based insurer focused on what the website refers to as specialty auto insurance products. Private passenger auto insurance appears to be the company’s only product.

About Key Insurance Company

Key’s website is one of the most basic we have ever seen for a car insurance company and offers very limited information.

The company was chartered in 2007 and is an admitted auto insurance carrier domiciled in Kansas. They operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Med James, Inc. which is a managing general agency that offers insurance products through companies like Key. They have been in business since 1991.

Key Insurance is licensed in Oklahoma, Alabama, Nevada, and Arizona in addition to Kansas. Their headquarters is located in Shawnee, KS. Products are sold through independent agents. Based on the lack of information on the company website, it is a safe guess that most of their new business is brought in through agents.

Key Insurance Products

Auto insurance is the only products available from Key, but they offer no information whatsoever about this product on the company website.

Although there is an agent login – which makes it clear the company does use agents – there is no option to search for a local agent to assist with further product information.

The front page of the site advertises “specialty” auto insurance, but it is not made clear what that means.

Rates

Not surprisingly, the option to obtain a rate quote for this insurance company online is not possible – as we noted, there is not even an agent locator to direct potential customers to the appropriate place to obtain a quote.

A general toll-free number is listed, and we can only assume this will direct to a customer service representative that can assist with quoting.

Claims

The Key Insurance website does have an instruction page for what to do in the event of an accident, but there is no information in regards to how to file a claim.

The site does have a policyholder login, and we would guess that some claim information might be available through that portal, but we can’t say for sure.

Again, the toll-free main line appears to the access point for all questions, including those regarding claims.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Key Insurance Company has an F rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), which is the result of nine complaints filed against them and four to which they did not respond. While nine complaints overall is generally not a lot, we cannot judge it in relation to the size of the company since we have no information in that area. The BBB has deemed it to be worthy of their lowest possible ranking.

The BBB page also has 13 negative reviews citing poor customer service and failure to pay claims. We didn’t find any reviews of this company elsewhere.

The Bottom Line

Key Insurance offers little to no information about the company or its products, and it has the lowest possible rating from the BBB. We found nothing to recommend this company and suggest looking elsewhere for your car insurance needs; there are many other companies serving the same area with a much better reputation and much more available information.

  1. Currently dealing with Key Insurance due to one of their drivers hitting my car and fleeing the scene.

I have dealt with them for almost a month now and the service has been absolutely terrible.

The adjuster refused to speak with me or call me back.

I’ve left at least 3 voicemails and have yet to speak to that person.

Getting a rental through them has not been an easy process.

Misinformation has been given to me, the collision company and the rental company.

I work in customer service and I know how the customer should be treated and this is completely unacceptable.

  2. Key Insurance [redacted] me over. They cancelled my policy out of no where and didn’t even call me or send me a letter to let me know. So I call DMV saying I’m no longer covered and ended up having to pay $500 to DMV to re-register my plates. Also ended up pulled over when I didn’t know they had cancelled my policy and have had to pay another $500 for a ticket. DO NOT GET KEY INSURANCE THEY ARE [redacted].

  4. Worst insurance ever, got hit by a Key insured driver, after they got all the story and found out it was the other driver’s fault, they wouldn’t answer phone calls. I left messages many times but they wouldn’t call back, now I’ll have my lawyer do the calling.

  5. WOW! So I have Key Insurance I live in Oklahoma. I’ve had them maybe 3 or 4 months. I just now checked the reviews…I’m shocked that there isn’t one single good thing to say. I just paid my next 30 days today. I am for sure going before my next bill an switching to a new company. I’m afraid of what could happen if something does ever happen while I’m driving an I am a mom of 2 and live pay check to pay check so I would need my car or a car if something did happen. I can’t believe there isn’t anything good said. I will say though… I have liability and it is affordable. That’s really it

  6. Worst company ever! We represent a client that was hit by a Key insured. The adjuster REFUSES to return calls, even the manager has done nothing! We already filed the suit and will see them in court. Done playing games with this company and their half-[redacted] adjusters.

  7. The Key İnsurance is the worst insurance I have ever seen. Someone must shut down this insurance immediately. They don’t care about the customers. They don’t respond to the customers and they are really RUDE …

  8. We live in Alabama. We are currently dealing with Key Insurance. One of their clients hit 6 vehicles, one of which was my sons truck, and yes it is done. Bent the frame pretty good. He was traveling at a high rate of speed while under the influence of drugs. One car had 2 babies in it. And one had an Attorney/ Judge/ Senator. Same person. So maybe he will get somewhere. As for us and the other folks, we’re going to have to battle. Going to go to the Insurance Commission if no help within a week.

    • Help for what???

The moron doesn’t have enough coverage to pay everyone & they won’t pay until they know everyone’s damages.

It’s not hard to figure out: damages exceed the policy limits.

Which is why you have insurance & don’t rely on another.

  9. Have yet to read a positive thing about Key insurance and I understand why. I too have been involved in an accident at which the insured, with Key, was at fault I received local estimates and then they sent an independent appraiser out to assess the damage, her estimate was 1/4 of what two reputable body shops were. Keys appraiser told me how she had been raised with her dad in a body shop and knew how to appraise vehicles and had no affiliation with Key insurance which was BS. Upon telling me what her appraisal was they would only pay half of the total, even though their client was at fault. They said if it cost more than what the total estimate was they would pay an additional half, never heard of this kind of BS with an insurance company before. The claims agent at Key was rude and tried to over talk me every time I went to say something. I hope the insurance commission shuts this company down as quickly as possible, all they’re doing is collecting money from their clients and not paying for the claims that they should be paying for it. I strongly suggest before trying to deal with Key insurance get a lawyer

  10. Las Vegas, Nevada Adjuster is [Redacted] from Key Insurance seems to be the same, 08/29/2017 I was stopped at a light with my kids in our 2016 dodge dart when a 2002 ford mustang slammed into the back of us and admitted fault knowingly driving with faulty brakes. She’s pushing for my insurance Progressive to fix my car and I pay the $500 deductible, I got a lawyer and recommend everyone going against Key insurance do the same.

  11. This is the first time I’ve posted but felt compelled to add to the many posts sharing terrible Key experiences. My daughter was stopped in traffic on a highway and was hit by a Key insured at a high speed. Her new SUV was totaled but thankfully the new safety features protected her from long term injuries. Key personnel have been repeatedly unresponsive, rude and after three months and a ridiculously low offer for a new Toyota SUV based on vehicle values that were not at all comparable, they’ve sent me a letter telling me that they are closing my claim and I should go through my insurance. I responded to their very low offer with a detailed assessment showing that the basis for the low offer was severely flawed. The contact for the claim ignored my email, so I called and finally got someone who received my email and responded that he had added my assessment to the file record, but that did not prevent them from sending me a letter claiming that I didn’t respond to their offer so they are closing the claim. It’s about $35K, so I’m sure that’s why it’s being closed. I have countless emails documenting all my calls and emails to them, so my records are strong, but suing them will just prolong the pain. Of course, I pay well for my Farmer’s insurance, so that’s my best option at this point, but that’s what Key has been telling me to do from the start… It’s been a constant theme since my first call – wondering why? Hope that person who plowed into my daughter on the highway enjoys those cheap premiums! Any hope in filing a complaint with the insurance commission?

    • Hi JP,

Yes, it is recommended to get your state’s Insurance Commissioner’s office involved if it comes to that. The other route I would recommend when dealing with a potential settlement of that size is to involve an attorney. You can often get a free consultation, and only pay if the case is settled in your favor, depending on the attorney’s terms.

      Best,

      • KEY INSURANCE IS THE WORST INSURANCE. THERE IS NO ONE IN KEY INSURANCE COMPANY WHO CARES ABOUT THE LIVES OF INDIVIDUALS. SOMEONE HAS TO PUT A STOP TO THIS AWFUL COMPANY. IT’S JUST SAD THAT IS GOING TO BE A DAUGHTER OR SON THAT GETS KILLED BEFORE KEY INSURANCE GETS SHUT DOWN!

        • Yes they are a crap company. I agree.

But what you said makes no sense.

So a state farm insured person can’t kill someone, only a key insured person?

  13. I was involved in a very serious accident were a key insured driver going over 70 MPh slammed into the back of me when all traffic was stopped on the freeway. they hit multiple cars, and are clearly at fault. just telling me that they have yet to speak with the driver. My case worker is conveniently at the doctors today and has been out all week but the voice-mail says all messages before 3pm will be returned the same day. very frustrating!!!

  14. I have had key insurance for quite a few years i am happy with the coverage but there is a lot that i am not at all happy with i have been on a SR-22 for over 6 years i ask about how long i am to be on it and well they just do not know.. another i am extremely upset about they NEVER get your proof of insurance cards mailed out in time i have to go days sometimes weeks before I receive them in the mail so if i get pulled over i will have no proof to show the cops and will have to go to court and have yet more fines that cant afford.. another problem is I put my sons on my policy and they both are to have SR-22 also well the agents where i go i do not think they really know their jobs i cant never get a straight answer out of them. well for the last problem i went in last august of 2016 and signed out 3-4 or 5 cars off my policy the payment is on auto pay well i go to check over my auto pays and well it is now may 2017 and the cars are still on my policy i just know that your company will credit my account since this is an error in your companies side.. i like the 1 guy at the office that i go to but there is a female and a dude that is very rude not just 1 time but everytime i have went in there but the other male he is very friendly and polite.

  15. I’m looking at the comments above and just smiling “frustration smile” at how i’m currently being treated by [Redacted]. I happen to have liability insurance, a Key Insurance insured was at fault but his insurance company (Key) thinks their frustration will pull me off the case. It’s been more than three weeks now, and I’m still calling everyday to get something/anything moving. So frustrating and don’t bother calling the supervisor… same service…. These idiots are so frustrating, i wonder how much their customers pay for insurance. I’m amazed at the fact that they are in business…. how how how

    • I am in the same situation. I was involved in a car accident back in April. The driver insured by Key was cited with a ticket and per the police report puts their insured driver at fault. After being told by the first insurance rep there I was told they are waiting to here from the other 2 cars involved to get damage estimates to see if the $10,000 limit they had was going to be enough to pay all damages. Through this process I always had to call. They would never give me an update. So the first person that was handling this case at Key Insurance got fired or quit but I was never updated on the switch to a new case manager. Now I am being told that they are claiming not liable. It took them 4 months to come to this conclusion??? I think not. I am just getting the run around and am now going to have to take them to court. This Insurance company is a joke and would highly recommend staying away.

      • A drunk driver with Key insurance plowed into my back wall 4 months ago. Key insurance has been giving me the run around for 4 months. I sent them the estimates and the police report. They have done nothing and haven’t paid anything. They suck!

  16. This is the worst insurance company i have ever ran into. They expect you to make an on-time payment, but their computer system fails to log you in. And if you are unable to process a payment, then they want to drop your coverage, because you are unable to do so. As soon as i can, i am dropping ( KEY INSURANCE ) , and looking for something else. I have never seen anything like this before. This is not the first time this has happen, but i WILL make sure this is the last. PATHETIC !!!!

  17. my claim adjuster, [Redacted] with key insurance in shawnee mission, ks, has been the worst business person I have encountered in 56 years of living.
i am a retired accountant, with a enterprised comprised of eating establishments, video and photography production company, advertising and marketing and bookkeeping, accounting and taxes.
key insurance is my insurance company and the two accidents (claims) that [Redacted] has been the adjuster for are dormant to date. she has done nothin!!!!!

Both accidents were not might fault, so unfortunately, by law in kansas; my insurance co has to pay pip first. Well, I wasn’t aware of that law, and the insurance company, State Farm immediately without hesistation, promptly starting paying medical bills… then……….
[Redacted] comes along in November and nothing!!! the other insurance company treats me better than my own.
I made arrangements to have [Redacted] confer and work with state farm when i found out key insurance should have paid first then state farm, so i made the necessary info availble to state farm to assist [Redacted]. zelch!!!!
finally, after two weeks of waiting for prescription reimbursement, yesterday march 18th she asks me why didin’t i have state farm pay for my prescriptions then.
this lady is the worst and i guess i have to seek counsel to handle my accident and to bring a case against my own insurance company.
I am already stressed and without work awaiting surgeries, she makes my health worse. I regret having key insurance and hopefully others will add their comments and get this lady and maybe company ousted
