Utica National is a group of companies known mainly for business insurance, but offering several lines of individual insurance as well. With over 100 years in business, Utica is a solid company that has grown to be one of the top 100 insurance companies in the U.S.

Utica National Summary

Utica National Insurance traces its roots back to two companies, Utica Mutual Insurance Company and Graphic Arts Mutual Insurance Company, both founded in 1914. Today the group of companies has grown to include several more under the Utica National Insurance group umbrella, writing a variety of different policies across the nation.

The inclusion of Graphic Arts Mutual Insurance Company as a primary subsidiary has landed Utica a position as a major specialty insurer in the Graphic Communications industries. They also have a lot of business in the area of errors & omissions coverage for insurance agents and similar businesses.

Based out of New Hartford, New York, Utica has offices across the country representing both the primary and other subsidiaries. Their agents are scattered across the nation offering policies for both personal and commercial lines.

Insurance Products

Although they are best known as something of a specialty commercial insurance company, Utica does offer both basic and specialty personal lines products as well.

Auto Insurance

Utica has a comprehensive auto insurance program that includes all of the basic coverage as well as a few less-common extension features.

The Auto Essentials policy is Utica’s budget-friendly option for good drivers. This option offers a basic policy at a reduced premium. It’s designed for people who do not have a lot of assets to protect and don’t need a lot of options, although it still offers a choice of coverage limits and discounts.

The Auto Extension Pak takes the coverage to the next level with the following features:

  • Diminished Deductible (a program that reduces your deductible for good driving)
  • Accident Forgiveness
  • Airbag Malfunction
  • Gap coverage
  • Emergency Living Expenses
  • Increased roadside assistance
  • Death benefits

Among other benefits, Utica also offers Pet Medical included with their auto policies free of charge.

There is a long list of discounts available, from common features like good driver, to discounts for Electronic Stability Control and a green vehicle.

Other Vehicles

Policies are available to cover other vehicles and “toys” such as motorcycles, boats, and snowmobiles. Each policy includes coverage specific to that vehicle, such as motorcycle gear coverage and trailer coverage

Home Insurance

Unlike the auto program, the Utica website offers very limited information regarding their home insurance policies. Homeowner’s insurance from Utica offers structure coverage, personal property coverage, and liability protection.

Utica also offers Renter’s Insurance policies that cover the personal property of those who live in rental homes and apartments.

Business Insurance

Utica’s business insurance is a big part of their market, offering coverage for both main street businesses and specialty markets.

Coverage is offered for the following business types:

  • Bakeries
  • Bed and Breakfast
  • Child Care Centers
  • Funeral Homes
  • General Business
  • Graphic Communications
  • Libraries
  • Professionals
  • Quick Foods
  • Small Business
  • Religious Institutions
  • Retailers
  • Wholesalers
  • Volunteer Fire Departments

Utica also provides coverage for the following “niche” markets:

  • Artisan Contractors
  • Auto Service
  • Educational Institutions
  • Energy Dealers
  • Financial Institutions
  • Franchised and Non-Franchised Auto Dealers
  • Light Manufacturing
  • Machine Shops

The company also offer bonds, Worker’s Compensation, and Agent Errors & Omissions coverage.

Additional Products

Personal Lines Products

Utica rounds out their insurance offerings for individuals with personal umbrella insurance and identity theft insurance.

Utica National Rates

As Utica is an agent-driven insurance company, online quoting is not available and therefore comparing rates is not easy. In general, insurance companies that use agents to sell their policies tend to have higher rates than direct buy insurance companies who do not need to pay agent commissions.

Utica does offer their Essentials plan, which promises to offer 10% reductions for good drivers. This indicates that those with clean driving records are likely to qualify more easily for competitive rates. A company like Utica is not likely to be particularly low-priced for anyone who has tickets or accidents on their record.

The company has a good list of discounts, which are helpful when it comes to bringing down rates, but will do the most good to those who already qualify for good rates thanks to a clean driving record.

Claims

Utica claims can be reported either through the 24-hour claims line or online on the Utica Customer Care site. There is also fax and mailing address information available on the website.

Similar to most major insurance companies, there is a Direct Repair program through which repairs are guaranteed for as long as the car is owned, as long as one of the in-network shops is used for repairs.

Utica promises fast and fair claims service, and that the claim will be settled as quickly as possible, but does not provide a timeline for claims or further in-depth information about the process.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Although not accredited, Utica has an A+ rating with the BBB, and in the past three years had only 11 complaints filed, two of which were closed in the last 12 months. This is an incredibly low number for a large insurance company. It should be noted though that this covers only the head office in New York, and there may be other complaints for other branches directly.

There are very few reviews of Utica out there, which is generally a positive sign. People are much more likely to write a review when they are unhappy than when things are going smoothly. As a result no reviews is usually good news when it comes to insurance companies.

Bottom Line

Although it’s difficult to ascertain how competitive Utica’s rates will be without easy access to a quote, everything else about the company points towards it being well worth the time to get one. A solid auto insurance program with plenty of features is the central attraction in their personal lines products, and the long list of discounts is certainly appealing. Those who are looking for the service of an agent, and willing to pay a little more for that service, should consider Utica.

  1. Utica Insurance is the best insurance company ever!

I’ve had them forever and I find my insurance agent a truly professional and efficient person.

I’ve had cars totaled and questionable accidents and they always paid.

    Terrific from beginning to end

  2. I wish I had read these reviews before choosing Utica. I also received a notice that they are not renewing my policy. I guess they only want you as a customer if you never submit a claim. This is fair warning to anyone considering this corrupt company. I’m also very annoyed that my insurance agent ever suggested them.

  3. This is the worst insurance company I ever worked with. I had an insurance policy on two commercial buildings under the same account, they canceled the insurance on one building and rewrote the policy for one building and charged me the same premium I was paying for the two buildings. I paid in advance for 3 months on the original policy, they are still billing me after I canceled the policy. I called the main office and tried to explain the situation , they were so rude they just hung up on me. I am reporting this to the BBB and hopefully, they will be able to help me. Do your self a favor and never ever get a policy with this highly unreputable company.

  4. Forget completely having comp insurance with these CROOKS and EXTORTIONISTS. Out of nowhere, these SHYSTERS wanted to raise my premium 500% for no reason. I canceled immediately and STILL, they are sending threatening letters trying to EXTORT money for the increased premium. Stay FAR away from these BANDITS!

  5. Utica National Insurance Group wanted almost $4000.00 a year to insure an 18 year-old male with a clean driving record who was also a good student. I switched everything to Geico (home, autos, umbrella) and still am not paying as much. Maybe Utica hasn’t heard there are other insurance companies out there?

  6. Horrible insurance company can’t get anyone from claims department on the phone. Never return voice mails or emails either.

  7. HORRIBLE insurance company. The house inspector demands that I take a day off work to accommodate his schedule. Finally, the inspector said that the would just do an external visit. Well Utica then cancelled my insurance stating that I refused to allow them to do an inspection. If it is this bad to buy insurance you can be sure that when you file a claim, they will stone-wall you until the end of time. Save yourself a lot of grief, and avoid them.

  8. THE WORST OF THE WORST! Please stay far away from this company. Instead of helping you, they exacerbate your situation and leave you (or anyone else BUT themselves) to be accountable for the problem. What is the point of having an insurance company if they don’t even help you??? I am never trusting this company again.

  9. Utica is the worst insurance company I’ve ever had the misfortune of being paired with. Geico sent me to them as underwriter on a BOP. Inspector calls to arrange a day to meet me at my business, but doesn’t give me a time. Called to clarify, no received call back. Informed him that the store was not open as reno was still taking place. Inspector never showed from 9-3:45. Attempted a call back, nothing. Contacted Geico to inform that the guy never showed nor clarified the time. Boom, dropped from company for failure to provide phys. inspection. Still haven’t received a single call back from Utica. Dumpster fire company.

  10. Terrible company! Claims agents are impossible to get in touch with, do not return emails or voice mails and do not answer the phone. When you do eventually get in touch with someone they are rude and condescending. Overall communication is HORRIBLE! We had some wind and hail damage to our roof so we had 3 separate roofing companies come out to asses the damage and give us an estimate for repairs. My husband and I filed a claim with Utica (our first time filing a claim after years of on time payments) and the entire process was a nightmare. We did eventually get a small payment for a portion of the roof, but not nearly what we needed because the entire roof needed replacing and we had to pay for the rest. I would not recommend this company to anyone. If you currently have Utica National as your insurance provider get out NOW before you have to file a claim!

  11. The absolute worst insurance company I have ever herd of
I had an accident with someone who was in a company truck insured with ultica insurance the driver was at fault he even admitted he was atfault once I called ultica to make the claim I had to wait for almost two weeks for them to contact the driver then the driver said he wasn’t at fault I sent pictures to the insurance company and I also had witnesses now they sent me a letter saying that they couldn’t determine who as at fault not I’m contacting my own lawyer to go after them because for one they never contacted the witness’s to see if anything was true and second I haven’t herd from them in over a month

  12. UTICA is an insurance company that is nothing more than paying homage to a heathen god. Don’t expect anything but rejections and denials if you have a legitimate claim. Worse to deal with than an ex-spouse with an attitude. Their rationale for not paying claims would be hysterical if it weren’t personal and costing me money.

    • Currently you have no tort rights against insurance companies. Governor Cuomo is going to amend insurance law 2106 but currently just for Hurricane Sandy victims. He reads his Twitter feed. Collectively we can appeal to him to amend the insurance law for everyone. 9 out of 10 insurance claims get dropped. New York courts are the 47th worst state out of 53. The way the law works currently the complaints have to be constant and egregious and you have to go to the attorney general. How can they be constant if 9 out of 10 give up?
Go to the attorney general’s office and complain go on Governor Cuomo’s Twitter to change this law. Amend 2106 for all.

  13. UTICA is a SHAM. You’re better off not having insurance. I don’t waste my time reviewing online but this one is worthy. DO NOT “protect” your business with their General Liability. They will do EVERYTHING they can to fight the claim, treating you as public enemy number one. I am happy to say that I will be dropping them immediately and moving to a company who wishes to have a long-term business relationship. [Redacted] Utica.

  14. Customer service for Utica national insurance is horrible. The person who was handling my case is not professional at all. The person who handled my case represents the company. Therefore I had a terrible experience with Utica national insurance. Never recommend this company to anybody else.

  15. was referred to a broker thru a friend…..this broker then helped me to get auto and homeowners insurance. bought the house for 130k, replacement cost was set at 200k. ok fine…so far so good. Utica National then supposedly had broker contact me cuz they were trying to say my house square footage is larger than what was stated on tax record, and they wanted me to insure my house for 300k. WHAT??! r u saying my house is worth more burned to the ground than standing???? almost triple what i paid for it. INSANE! we did the math here, and the square footage is what was posted on the realtor.com website. think broker and utica national just trying to make more money off of me. so in the long run, i switched to another company. now im waiting for refund check…

  16. As a commercial landlord owner, you deserve to be able to speak directly to the inspector representing the insurance company if you need questions answered regarding issues about your property noted. Instead, the inspector never returned my calls after leaving him a couple of voicemails about issues he pointed about my sidewalk. Utica said, because I received their insurance through an Allstate agent, that it is the Allstate agent’s responsibility to explain the issue.

LISTEN UTICA!!!! THE INSPECTOR WAS OUT THERE TO DO THE INSPECTION AND WRITE THE REPORT. YOU ARE ASKING MY AGENT TO EXPLAIN AN ISSUE THAT IS THE INSPECTOR’S RESPONSIBILITY? ALLSTATE HAS NO CLUE AND IS NOT QUALIFIED TO BE AN EXPERT! UN BE LIEEEEVA BLEEEEE!!!!

YOU ARE FIRED ONCE MY POLICY WITH YOU EXPIRES!

  18. WORST INSURANCE COMPANY EVER!! their insured rear ended me on the freeway in a rental car, turn the rental back in (didn’t tell the rental car company) jumped on a plane back to NY and they never told Utica she hit someone! took 4 months for them to get things moving and my car fixed then had my personal medical records emailed to their personal Gmail account and went through 5 adjusters over a 19 month period… never returned phone calls or emails. They played the blame game of my insurance company never providing requested documents when I was cc-d on the emails!!! When we settled I was told “check was in the mail” well see if it ever gets here! ABSOLUTELY NO ACCOUNTABILITY of their employees and when to speak to a supervisor they have an “oh well” attitude

  19. I went with Utica insurance for a workmen comp. insurance. Only to find out they cancelled me after one month, they didn’t want to carry the tile on my policy for flooring. They knew this before I paid for the policy. So they took the down payment of $756.00. The first month I paid $ 199.00. Only to find out, they dropped me. Said they would sent a refund check. I was moving and I called and told them what my new address, was a week or more before I moved. When I called to see where the check was, they said they didn’t have time to change the new address in there system!!!!! So they cancelled the check they sent and sent me out a new one.

WELL THE CHECK CAME IN THE MAIL AND I DEPOSITED INTO MY ACCOUNT AND IT CAME BACK A WEEK LATERtTO MY ACCOUNT WITH OVER DRAFT !!!!!!!!!! I STILL DO NOT HAVE THE CHECK TWO MONTHS LATER AND I HAVE TO CLEAN UP THERE DIRTY WORK. AND TO TOP IT ALL OFF. THEY ONLY REFUNDED ME $ 278.80.

I even talked to a manager, and asked for a list of what they covered my company for. That they thought, talking all that money for. She never called me back as of today.

My advice DO NOT USE THIS UTICA INSURANCE FOR ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!! I WILL BE CALLING THE INSURANCE COMMISSIONER OFFICE TODAY TO PUT THEM ON THERE LIST!!!!!!

THIS IS FRAUD ALL THE WAY!!!!!!! WORST INSURANCE COMPANY EVER !!!!!!!! THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY AND LEAVE YOU WITH NOTHING BUT A PAIN IN THE BUTT. AND I’M NOT STOPPING THERE.

    • Victoria,
I just read your post and have recently been scammed by Utica in my NY WC Case.
Please contact me if you can to discuss . I have 2 attorney’s at the moment working on a very aggressive stance towards UTICA unless they resolve this quickly because after four years of battling them, winning my WC case, Winning THEIR appeal, they have resorted to illegal practices to obtain their objective (closing my WC case)., obviously after ALL this, I am not simply going to “roll-over” at 60 years old FULLY disabled, and live in the street. I will do WHATEVER is necessary to resolve this and I am in the process of obtaining allies who have dealt with them in similar fashion. The Insurance Commissioner in New York may have to get involved (if need be)
ANY help, appreciated, there is strength in numbers.
      Thank you,
      Linda

  20. Received non renewable notice from my agent dated 10/17/2013 due to one of my four vehicles being a Suzuki Samuri which is unacceptable according to their vehicle list. It was strange that I was paid up until the end of the year and had three other vehicles on my policy. If this were an unacceptable vehicle, why did they take my money for over a year on this vehicle? There was also questioning why I had four vehicles, if they were all registered to me and if they were used in my business. I have a one man business, me.

Was already looking for insurance elsewhere. Is that the reason for this letter. Too, would I have been covered or will I be covered if I have an accident until 12/29/2013, my expiration date?

    Reply
    • Hi Tony,

If the notice was “non-renewable” then you are probably covered until the renewal date. I would double check that to be sure. Send an email to your agent so you can get something back in writing. That way, if it turns out the carrier actually dropped the car while the agent said it was covered, his Errors and Omissions insurance should be on the hook for that. Either way, it would keep you somewhat protected.

On the other hand, if they say it is no longer covered, stop driving it until you get insurance elsewhere. Try shopping your four cars around. You might find a better rate if you have not checked prices in a while.

      • I am currently in talks with them about fixing my car because I ran over some unexpected debris on the highway. They don’t want to pay the supplement the body shop wrote for and only wants to pay $900 odd dollars when the damages done to my car is about $5000. I am waiting to see the outcome of this. And the insurance commission will hear about this.
