Previously known as Unitrin, Kemper is a family of companies offering a range of personal and commercial insurance products. Through this group of companies, they are a one-stop shop for most insurance needs, with more than 6 million policies in force across the nation.

Kemper Summary

What is Kemper Insurance? Kemper was founded in 1990 as Unitrin Inc., a spinoff from Teledyne. Their success was so great that within a few years they became the target of hostile takeover attempts, winding up in a legal battle with American General over their stock buyback approach to staying independent. Unitrin succeeded and continued to grow by leaps and bounds through the 1990s.

In 2011, Unitrin officially took the name Kemper Corporation. Most of their insurance products are sold through a network of insurance agents, but Kemper Direct offers direct-buy auto insurance to consumers without an agent. Among their subsidiaries include recently acquired California auto insurer Alliance United.

Kemper’s products include auto, home, and life as well as commercial insurance. They also offer several specialty products and have a branch handling consumer finance products such as loans. They operate in all 50 states, although not all subsidiaries and products are available in every one

Insurance Products

Through their family of companies, Kemper offers a full range of insurance products. The various businesses cater to specific market segments.

Auto Insurance

Kemper offers auto insurance through several different companies. They have choices for direct-buy, policies sold through agents, and high-risk coverage as well.

Kemper Direct is the company’s direct buy option, offering online quoting and purchasing of auto insurance without an agent. They offer coverage in 26 states. In addition to the standard coverage, Kemper Direct also offers features such as accident forgiveness and pet protection coverage. These standard policies come with several discount options including multi-policy and safety discounts.

Kemper Personal and Commercial Lines is the main insurance company that sells products through agents. This company offers standard and preferred policies with multiple options available to upgrade such as the Kemper Total option, which offers extended replacement cost coverage instead of actual cash value, this option is available for a brand-new leased or purchased vehicle.

Kemper Specialty California is the California-only company offering non-standard insurance to those with driving record issues or other problems obtaining coverage.

Home Insurance

Kemper sells home insurance through both Kemper Direct and agents, as well as through many subsidiary companies.

They write standard homeowner’s insurance offering coverage for the structure, personal property, and liability, as well as offering both condo and renter’s insurance options.

There are multiple discounts available including a loss-free discount and a mature homeowner’s discount, and they also have a bundling option available. The Package Plus policy, only available through agents, offers a single-policy, one bill choice that covers auto and home under blanket coverage.

Life & Health Insurance

Kemper offers whole and term life as well as several options for supplemental health insurance needs. These are sold through two subsidiaries, Kemper Home Service Companies and Reserve National.

Kemper Rates

Kemper’s rates are really quite reasonable. Based on our standard rate test, we were able to get a quote that came in about 20% below average. That’s impressive for a company not considered a budget insurer.

This rate quote is from the Kemper Direct system, so it may not reflect the kind of rates offered through agents, where commissions can have an impact on price.


Kemper accepts claims both online and over the phone. Their 24/7 toll-free claims line can be reached at 1-800-536-7376.

Claims can be filed through an online form for auto, property, glass, and roadside assistance.

Status updates for claims can be found in the Manage My Policy section of their website. Claims typically show within one business day, and are subsequently updated every 24 hours.

Claims for life and health policies, as well as those through other subsidiary companies, are filed through each individual company’s claims department and handled independently.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Is Kemper Life Insurance legit? Kemper is not Better Business Bureau accredited, but does carry an A+ rating. There are 30 complaints filed against the company in the past three years, 15 of which were closed in the previous 12 months. Of the complaints filed, 19 of them were regarding product and service.

There are a few complaints about Kemper on the throughout the internet, most of which appear to be written by non-Kemper customers who were involved in an accident with a Kemper insured. There are also a few positive reviews of the company – something rare enough in the insurance industry to really stand out.

Overall, there are no red flags in the reviews and the company has a very low volume of complaints given their size. The positive reviews give an added boost to Kemper’s reputation.

Bottom Line

Kemper offers solid products at a good price, with a good reputation to back them. They give insurance shoppers the choice of buying direct or working with an agent to select insurance coverage, which helps them widen their appeal.

With bundling available and access to all of the basics of personal insurance, Kemper can provide one-stop shopping for most people. While we are unable to say what their rate would be in the non-standard market, for good drivers Kemper is well worth a closer look.

  1. I spoke with an individual named Marlyin Clayborn

    Aside from the fact that he could not answer most of the questions I asked, he was getting extremely agitated and frustrated by and ended up hanging the phone up while I was still talking to him.

    While that goes to show the morals of him as a person along with the lack of respect he has/shows, it also shows his lack of competency and professionalism in handling the matter.

    I’m not sure as to why Kemper would hire such a person to be a representative of theirs.

    I am extremely disappointed in the way that situation has been handled, especially given that I have been without a vehicle since April 15, 2019, due to an accident caused by Kemper’s insured.

    I made several requests and repeatedly asked to be given information regarding a rental car and even that was ignored and not acknowledged.

    I have not been able to exercise the simplest of daily activities because of you guys and your unreasonable delay of this entire process, and I did place Kemper on notice more than once.

    I’ve dealt with several insurance companies previously, however, this is by far the worst, most unethical, and unprofessional company I have ever had to deal with.

  2. Worst insurance ever! Their insured hit my parked car.

    Almost going to be a month since then. My car is in the shop and they told me it’ll be there for 22 days.

    The adjuster has yet to authorize them to purchase parts so it will be 22 days from whenever she gets off her ass and allows them to order the parts.

    Who knows when that will be.

    Also, they have the nerve to ask us to pay out of pocket for a rental when again THEIR INSURED HIT MY PARKED CAR.

    My question is Why am I spending any money at all when I had nothing to do with this????

    Why am I stressing about paying my bills over a rental??

    I’ve been taking a lyft to and from work and just like other reviews I’ve been told “submit your documents for review” which of course means there’s no guarantee we will reimburse.

    Worse insurance, Leave calls 5 times a day to get a call back at the end of the week.

    They have NO customer service.

    They could care less what you’re going through which is sad because I had nothing to do with the accident but man am I paying for it.

  3. Kemper sucks. This is the first clam I have ever had on my house in 30 plus years. A tree hit my house because of the weight of the snow. They sent an adjuster out and then they sent part of the money. Now, I’m waiting for the rest of my money, $3,408.92 that I have paid out of my pocket. Been trying to get a hold of them for over 7 weeks they won’t even return my insurance agent calls or emails. I will not renew with them and tell everyone I know what a [redacted] insurance company they are.

  4. This is my reply to my lawyer below (2nd paragraph) because I saw your CCC report. I will post this on every social site with your company name attached. It’s disgusting how your company treat victims. I will let the public know. Reviews. Facebook. Etc. Your client not only totaled but “demolished” my car, 86yr old women, my only means of transportation. Do you know how tough it’s been with kids and work? And you treat me like this. The victim. Wow! Nice…..

    I read over the paperwork. It’s crazy how they are trying to lowball me for my car. I understand it’s used. I understand it’s a 2006, but it was mine. First title car of mine. Every place on the internet is saying the value is between 3400-4200. I heard what you said, forget what I paid, forget Facebook prices, consumer value is WAY different, look on the internet and look at sites. Sort through 2006 prices. Show me where I can get one for 2,047.00. Please show me! I will buy one immediately. So they expect me to buy a new one for 2,047.00. Where? That’s ridiculous.

WORST INSURANCE EVER – They do not return your emails or calls, they do not provide you with ANY information – each time you call you are on hold for at least 20 minutes, nobody is ever available to help you… I could go on and on… WASTE OF MONEY – if anything serious happens and you have Kemper insurance – you are F*****!! Save your money and time and energy, this insurance is a joke.

  6. The worst insurance company I have ever dealt with. Their employees bring new meaning to the word unprofessional and discourteous. Avoid like the plague.

  7. Kemper is hands down the worst company I have ever done business with. My monthly payment went up regularly for no reason,no tickets,accidents or anything. This company has very shady business practices and I highly recommend you look elsewhere if you are in need of any kind of insurance.

  8. I am not and will not EVER be insured by kemper. We were involved in an accident by a drunk driver insured by kemper. In the middle of our repairs kemper refused to continue to pay for our rental, cancelled our rental, threatened to report rental as stolen, and had money taken out of my bank account for this rental. While calling 11 times In 3 days never received a return call. When finally getting ahold of an agent they were extremely rude, gave me the run around on my questions, was unprofessional and refuses to work with me. [Redacted] was the worst one we spoke too

  9. Kemper send a demolition crew to get rid of a couple square inches of mold due to a water leak. After destroying my kitchen they are refusing to pay for rebuilding it. I’m not a litigious person, but I’m getting close…..

  10. Was involved in a claim on my house due to water damage. They are extremely difficult to work with, unhelpful, very rude, and shady. As soon as possible, I’m fleeing. It’s been a nightmare.

  11. Kemper has to be the worst. I can’t imagine a company handling a claim with a sense of less fairness. After many years of paying premiums with only a few minor claims they completely let me down when I needed them. Suddenly I was treated like the enemy. They did every thing they could to low ball me and in the end I had no choice but to let them get away with cheating me. My only revenge is cancelling my policy and writing this review.
