About Horace Mann

Horace Mann was founded in 1945 by two Illinois teachers; the purpose of the new company was to provide educators with affordable auto insurance. The company expanded both its geographical reach as well as its product lineup over the years, and also opened its doors to all school employees.

Named for the founder of modern public education, the company aims many of its services at the needs of teachers, including things like student loan assistance and assistance with classroom funding. Workshops and other financial planning services are also available.

Insurance products include auto, home insurance, life insurance, and supplemental products, with annuities and IRAs among the financial products.

Products are sold through agents, who are often former educators. The company’s headquarters is in Springfield, Illinois, with agencies and offices throughout the country.

Horace Mann offers the big three in personal insurance – auto, home, and life, along with a few other options and several financial products.

Auto Insurance

Horace Mann’s auto insurance program offers all of the basics of coverage including legally required coverage and options like comprehensive coverage, collision coverage, roadside assistance, and rental reimbursement.

The Educator Advantage package is also included in every policy sold to a teacher at no additional charge. This includes a number of benefits:

  • Increased roadside assistance coverage (if this option is added to the base policy)
  • Waiver or reduction of the deductible on vandalism that occurs on or near school property or at a school-sponsored event
  • New car replacement
  • $1,000 in pet coverage
  • Liability coverage for transportation of students in the insured vehicle

Discounts on the auto policy include an educator discount for teachers and administrators, association discount for members of certain educational associations, and a payroll deduction discount. There are also standard discounts like multi-policy.

Home Insurance

The home insurance package policy is basic, covering the dwelling and other structures, personal property, liability, and loss of use. Extra coverage can be added on to customize the policy, including:

  • Refrigerated goods
  • Scheduled personal property
  • Replacement cost on personal property
  • Identity theft

There is an Educator Advantage endorsement for this policy as well, covering money or goods for a school-sponsored event against theft, lock replacement and re-keying, and a deductible waiver on claims for items stolen during a school-sponsored event away from home.

The discounts are similar to those found with other policies; new construction, protective devices, and auto/home among them. There is also a loyalty discount for those moving from a renter’s policy to a homeowner’s policy with the company.

Horace Mann’s renter’s policy is as standard as the homeowners, covering personal property, liability, and loss of use.

Life and Disability Insurance

Horace Mann has several life insurance options available including term life insurance, universal life insurance, and whole life insurance.

The site does not offer details on the policies, just general overviews of the type of insurance and how it works. Visitors are directed to contact an agent for more information.

Disability insurance is also available, but as the life policies, details are not available.

Since Horace Mann serves only a specific market, it is not surprising that the offer quotes only through agents.

In searches of the California Department of Insurance sample rate database, Horace Mann frequently appears among the lowest price for car insurance. We ran a sample through that system for this review and found Horace Mann to be the third least expensive option for standard coverage.


Claims can be reported to Horace Mann 24/7 through a toll-free number that is the same for life, auto, or home but differs for other claims. A separate number is listed for glass-only claims as well as for disability claims.

The company does offer online claims filing, but only when logged into the insured’s web account. There is a mobile app, but it does not appear to have a claim filing function.

Glass claims are handled through Safelite, a national mobile glass repair and replacement company. They are used by many large insurance companies and work directly with the claims department for direct billing.

The site provides a checklist for each type of claim and a basic overview of what to expect from the process. Claims information is easy to locate on the site and presented clearly and concisely.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Horace Mann has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with a total of 19 complaints on file in the past three years. There are 11 negative customer reviews on the website, many of them complaining about poor customer service and billing issues.

We were unable to find much in the way of customer reviews elsewhere, including the usual insurance review sites. A lack of reviews usually denotes a positive reputation, since people are less likely to write a review when happy than when dissatisfied.

The Bottom Line

Horace Mann has a good reputation and appears to have low rates, at least based on the information we were able to find. They are well worth a look for those who are school employees and are seeking a company aimed at the needs of educators. Products are basic but solid and should meet the needs of most customers, with added benefits for teachers.

  1. I recently made an offer on a home and need to get it insured before the closing.

    They responded by email would not insure the home no reasons given.

    It is currently insured and though showing that needs a little work would be nothing I will call the insurance on anyway.

    So I called for the reason.

    The agent told me that they would not be able to cover it do to the driveway.

    Yep it has some cracks in it and someone may hurt themself on it.

    When I expressed my distaste he said that it also had an oil heater and that the tank looked to be too close to the house, there were things on the porch (we were to close the house in 6 days at this time they may be moving out), the gutter is hanging (I think it is bent) and then there was the fact that he could not get close enough to take pictures of the place for the underwriters.

    I have been with this company for more than 10 years and have had 3 or 4 claims with them.

    I felt a bit like I was required to work in the system and not given the rules.

    Held ransom by the tow truck driver for the first claim who must take me to his shop which did not do the work right (my first accident ever).

    The company was not informed about the area well enough when called to give good answers.

    The second hail damage that they came and checked and sent a check with no problems there.

    When I fixed the roof the guy did not have insurance and let my home be destroyed (not Horace Mann’s fault.) Horace Mann came through and took pictures of all my stuff (like boxes stacked in the room, and laundry) focusing on anything that did not look good and the damage too.

    Which they did not do well enough the first time and had to come back.

    Soon after this, I had my vehicle blew an engine so I sold it quickly to get something else but not knowing that you should never cancel your insurance for any reason. Three days later I did and started it back up again.

    They seeing that I canceled the vehicle sent me a letter dated the cancellation date stating that they would cancel my home insurance if things were not fixed around the house.

    Some were not even connected to the house like the shed I was building in the yard.

    Please explain to me how a shed that is in the process of being build effects your home or its insurance 30 feet or more away?

    Some of these things were mentioned were brought up to me on the call.

    It is like we don’t like people to have claims, their lives to have problems, or to have any mess when your ceiling is hanging down around your ears.

    This should be their slogan “When we are done with you we will let you know”.

    Up till this last interaction I was willing to stay their customer but no longer.

    Thinking that maybe it is me not knowing as this was my first of any of these problems.

    I will also tell everyone not to use them if they want to have good service over time.

    At best it was 50% ok service. I know they are out to make a profit but are they not expecting to have something happen some times.

  2. I was an HM agent for 4 years, both as an exclusive agent and a licensed producer. As I read through these claims and issues different people have had, I think it’s important to realize that customers all have good and bad claims experiences, no matter what company they are with. One issue that is specific to HM claims is that they are a relatively small company and cannot always deal effectively with the volume of claims, which results in the issues you’ve all described. I know that while I was there, the claims dept was effectively gutted more than once by other companies offering more money, perks, etc to claims agents, which meant they had to hire new employees, train them, etc. The other issue I think is specific to HM, (but not limited to HM) is that it views its exclusive agents like employees. It requires them to jump through hoops and does not allow them the freedom to pursue the kinds of business they want. They cannot easily sell their agency when they finally get fed up with the mess from HQ, it’s just a lose-lose from an agent perspective. They fire company owners (exclusive agents) for failing to meet production quotas, which strands customers. The agents who stay get disheartened and demoralized by the lack of support. When I left HM and became an independent agent 4 years ago, it was my independence day. I find that when companies compete for your business as an agent and a customer, rather than assuming you’ll stay, they provide better service and better prices.

  3. My daughter’s truck was hit while parked at her work almost two years ago, we have been fighting to her truck repaired since then. We have pictures and video of the actual hit and run that shows clearly the person that was driving the car, the color of the car, what type of car is & a partial license plate. With that same video and pictures, another Insurance Company was able to find all the information on this driver and the vehicle within 24 hours. So we contacted Horace Mann Insurance, after months and months of trying to get some answers and being ignored, with no responses to emails or phone messages, we kept calling and calling until they finally sent out a claims adjuster who said that her truck has significant damage to the entire body and bed of a truck and that he would submit his report and they would be contacting us to get it repaired. We never heard anything, that was four or five months ago and my husband finally got a hold of somebody at that horrible company, and they simply told us that the video and pics were too blurry to be able to determine that it was their client that hit my daughter’s truck. So they closed the claim, did not notify us and when my husband told them that he would be contacting our attorney, she just replied that we deny claims all the time so it really isn’t a big deal to us. I don’t understand how a company can stay in business by treating their customers and the general public like this. I don’t understand how they have not been shut down with this many issues being reported.
    I am so disgusted with this company, they are the most unprofessional, disrespectful, dishonest, unethical insurance company I have ever come across. Stay as far away from this company as you can get, and pray that nobody ever hits your car that has Horace Mann Insurance because it will never get resolved and you will be left paying for everything. It’s disgusting!!

      I was hit by there insured days ago still no conversation with them.

      They call me back right before they close from an 800 number which changes every time.

      • Insured by HoraceMann, full-coverage, I was hit by another driver and they had different insurance co.

        That person received a ticket, I did not. It was totally the other driver’s fault.

        Insured by Erie Insurance (other driver), they refused to pay for repairs to my car, and then so did HoraceMann.

        I’ve made complaints to insurance commission, spoke with someone numerous times, with no outcome.

        I was told they would investigate the situation along with BOTH insurance companies and get back to me, via phone, email, and mail.

        In 3 weeks, it will be a year-still driving significantly damaged car, with no response by anyone.

        And BTW, I had been with HoraceMann for about 25 years, they CANCELLED MY INSURANCE!

  4. I’ve been with Horace Mann for more than ten years. In that time I never filed a claim until I was struck by an uninsured motorist in mid-August 2017 (its now end of February 2018). They have yet to replace my son’s car seat despite promising to do so in August.

    I was struck again by another uninsured motorist while stopped at a red light on 2/4/18. It’s now 2/25/18, they’ve had an estimate for three weeks, and they still haven’t gotten around to approving me to get my car repaired.

    Avoid them like the plague. They take your money but give you absolutely nothing in return. If I could have back the premiums I’ve paid them I could pay for the repairs out of pocket and have a very nice nest egg.

    The worst insurance company I’ve ever dealt with.

    • I can’t even get them to call me back about my hit and run accident that happened on 1/23/18. Got rear-ended, even stated in messages that I likely wouldn’t need any repairs covered, just want to get the medical expenses with my whiplash covered. I’m delaying care because I don’t trust they’ll pay for it…

      • They are required by law to respond within a specific amount of time. If they do not they can be has happened to them before where a minor incident cost them thousands…google to see how long they have. Fortitude to you.


  5. I’ve read the above comments and I’m gonna tell you guys I run a body shop and this company is a joke and a ripoff. A customer of mine was hit at a stop light in the rear pushed into another vehicle in front of her by a Horace Mann insured driver. She got two estimates one from me and one from another body shop both showing nearly 2 grand of damage. I dealt with a [Redacted] who then transfers the claim to a rude [redated] named [Redacted] who proceeds to tell me that there just doing a claim on the rear not the front as well. My customer will have to pay for the front of her own vehicle, I told her twice I wasn’t to be [redacted] around so she calls the car owner and proceeds to tell her the same and ends the call. 3 days later she received a check for 600 dollars for rear damage lol. What a joke. Who is gonna waste there time to fix 2 grand of damage with 600 dollars? All I can say is god help you if you are hit by one of their drivers because these low-ball [redacted] won’t cover your damage that’s for sure. I deal with insurance companies daily and this is the first time I’ve ever been told we are gonna revise your estimate to what we think it should be. My question is if you [redacted] ever had experience in the body shop field then you would have a right but sitting behind a desk pushing a [redacted] pencil so the company you work for is to the good will come back on you eventually so if you wanna know what I think HORACE MANN SUCKS !

      Avoid a headache and find another insurance company.
      Why pay for insurance when you will get denied when you make a claim?

  6. My car was hit by one of their policyholders. They were TERRIBLE to work with. They were slow to respond and cost me $ because of it. Then, they lowballed me completely on their settlement offer. They wouldn’t even consider my list of comparable vehicles that were much more similar to my vehicle than to the 2 comps they used. The Horace Mann claim rep [Redacted]. was a complete jerk, combative at every step. Finally, I had to speak to his boss. He was more pleasant but repeatedly referred to the “minimum” they are required to do by law. That seems to be their approach. Do the ABSOLUTE minimum they can get away with legally.

    I’d stay away from this company. And, if you’re hit by one of their customers, prepare for a hassle and major loss.

    • Oh yes, they low balled me on my settlement as well. But I ended up taking it so I could get them out of my mind and move on with my life. Then they went up on my insurance, even though they said it wouldn’t increase because the accident was a hit and run and was not my fault.

    • Me too. I have a lawyer but they are absolutely criminal – get out while you can if you have Horace Mann.

      • I agree with you on Horace Mann Insurance they think it’s okay to take their sweet time to pay people out after their motorist hit others. I’m having an issue now with them. They are horrible at paying out.

        • From the bottome of my heart I am sorry for anyone who had to ‘deal’ with Horace Mann. On further inspection we found multiple problems including being charged for properties we know nothing about. Big heads up here, check out your business with them.

  7. You get what you pay for, and in this case you will get very little. Regarding my recent experience with home insurance in North Carolina –
    – Agent does not answer his phone, and may get back to you in a day or two, or not.
    – After having homeowners insurance for over 20 years, the policy was cancelled after a one month’s delay in payment with little or no notice despite being notified a refinance was in progress and they would be paid from the closing proceeds.
    – The agent was either not made aware of cancellation, or failed to tell his clients (us) that the cancellation had occurred. No apologies were given, written or otherwise. No written notice of the cancellation was given to the clients or the new mortgage company.
    – The agent’s reason given for cancellation was different from the reason headquarters gave. Why?

  8. One of their clients ran a stop sign and had no license and admitted guilt for the accident that totalled my car. After 12 days I still cannot get a rental car. The adjuster, the adjuster’s supervisor and the main office will not return calls, emails or texts. This is by far the worst company I have ever had to deal with. My adjuster is [Redacted] at [Redacted] and her supervisor is [Redacted] at [Redacted], neither of which you will be able to reach. I have tried several times is the 10 day period since the accident only to be frustrated by no communication by email, text or phone.

    • I’m having the same issue! My truck was hit by one of their insured (she ran a stop sign) on Jan 24, 2018, and I honestly feel like I was involved in a hit and run. I took a picture of the impact which included her car. Every agent that I have spoken with gives me a different answer. They don’t return calls, have NEVER contacted me by phone as promised and refuse to reply to the email I sent with a picture attached. To say I am livid is putting it mildly! I am going to contact the BBB and whatever other agencies that deal with fraud because they are a fraud in my opinion. They claim to have been trying to reach their insured. I was told the time frame they give their insured is up to 2 weeks. Needless to say, I think I’m going to contact an attorney & then sue them for damages as well as the stress and anxiety I have developed! Now I see how people go postal at businesses! I am feeling REAL postal at this point. It’s consuming my life. They have no empathy whatsoever! I just want to get my car fixed. They are the most inconsiderate, rude and incompetent people I have EVER dealt with!

      • File a complaint with your state board of insurance, I don’t know how they get away with their illegal ways. Don’t waste your time, file claim with your insurance. Who would USE them after reading these reviews?

  9. DO NOT USE Horace Mann Insurance.
    I’ve had two claims.
    On my second claim, the adjuster wouldn’t return the calls and emails from the body shop so my car sat for about a week with not activity. The body shop called me to tell me things were stalled because the adjuster wouldn’t return their calls or emails. I had to be very very demanding with Horace Mann. I had the original adjuster removed from the claim after a very long and frustrating phone conversation and within 24 hours the second adjuster processed the repairs. Really, that’s very poor customer service.
    So then I decided to shop prices because they seemed fairly high. I called Costco Auto Insurance and got a much lower rate. Then the agent from Costco Auto Insurance said that I could have a lower rate but because of how Horace Mann was reporting my first claim, my rates were higher than they should be. I called Horace Mann and they were very rude and evasive. I needed a letter of clarification to be sent to Costco Insurance regarding who was and was not at fault on my first claim. This is a quote from my conversation with [Redacted], Senior Claims Counselor: “Because the adjuster from your first claim is noted as [Redacted] and that’s a nickname, we can’t find or communicate with her so no adjuster will be able to help you”. [Redacted] wouldn’t write me a clarification letter from the company.
    So, they only paid a claim after I had a very heated conversation to get their adjuster to act and when I go to compare prices I get evasive and limited help.

  10. What a nightmare. Hit by one of their insureds. In MD I should be able to have repaired at shop of my choice. Horace Mann offered $4k for a $24 repair to my brand new 2017 Audi Q7. I can’t help that it requires an Audi Certified Aluminum re-constructor, but Horace want to pay cheap, parking lot repair rates.

  11. I have been with Horace Mann forever (30+ years), but no more! For over a year, there has been no local agent until recently, when one was supposedly added. However, it’s impossible to talk to a local agent, all calls go to their national office. In fact, I have been getting cellphone calls from a Mexico line, and they finally left a message – yep, Horace Mann is using a call center based in Mexico – unbelievable! I am getting quotes from other companies, and will be switching soon. The very first quote was saving over $60/month, just on the auto insurance portion! Horace Mann’s customer service and value has become awful – I can’t believe this company is still being pushed as friendly toward those in the teaching profession – friendly for a ripoff!

  12. I started auto insurance with Horace Mann in early 2014. Payments set up automatically – deducted from my credit card. Added a 2nd vehicle – new car on 6/24/17 on exiting account. Husband personally met with agent to sign documents to ensure insurance coverage. Within days, I received a package that included identification cards, itemized list of coverage and a notice highlighted at the bottom: “DO NOT PAY – AUTOPAY IS SET UP” The amount of the insurance costs was significantly higher than the quote I’d received. Prior to receiving the false quote and deciding to continue coverage through Horace Mann, I had added/switched to Allstate the night I purchased the new vehicle. My agent Horace Mann immediately sent a quote that showed I’d save $800 per year if I remained with Horace Mann and was angry that I signed up for insurance with Allstate. My husband said [Redacted] was cursing Allstate – behaving very unprofessional and upset – venting at my husband besides the false quote. THE WORST PART … within a few weeks, I got into a fender bender accident. Without knowing really who was at fault, the total damage estimate for both cars: $1,500 with my deductible being $500. Despite the low cost of the accident claim, Horace Mann denied coverage saying that I was not insured on 7/20/17 (date of accident) because I failed to make a payment. They’ve given no explanation for the package from them that said I had coverage and signed up for auto pay – further, why I had not received any notice of cancellation, or even pending cancellation. From this and all the other complaints, I’d conclude they are bogus. I’m canceling as soon as I get signed up with Travelers or Allstate. Further, getting a lawyer or seeking relief through small claims against Horace Mann.

  13. I have been with Horace Mann forever, I am not sure how long. Have never had a claim, but then in March, I went on line to pay a premium and one of my policies said “canceled” with instructions to call customer service. I tried, the phone tree was too complicated, I was in meetings, so I immediately got new insurance with another company–for less. I am still waiting, almost 2.5 months later for a refund of the prepaid premium I had paid on the old policy, and have canceled my other policies, for that reason. Not sure what kind of business these people are running but if I am told one more time about their “multistage” cancellation process, you can be sure I will find many other venues to complain. I am not with Traveler’s for half what I had been paying Horace Mann–the price of loyalty, I guess…

  14. Do not use this insurance company!!! They are terrible! One of their customers pulled out in front of us and totaled our escalade. They are only wanting to give us $7000 for our $15000 vehicle. And they didn’t get us a rental until a week later! And are ditching us on the parking for it! Don’t use them and don’t have a wreck with any of their customers!

  15. Please stay away from Horace Mann. If you file a claim they will deny your renewal even though you are not at fault.

    They will raise your premium after 6 months.

  16. Horace Mann lost the payment I made for my car insurance and only let me know about it via notice of cancellation. I provided them with proof from my bank that I had paid on time, complete with a confirmation number, amount, date, and contact info. I’ve been using Lyft and borrowing family vehicles to get myself around, because I can’t very well drive without insurance. I’ve been at extreme inconvenience by this lapse for going on a WEEK. This still hasn’t been resolved.

    I am LIVID.

    Thank goodness I’ve never had to make a claim. With as unbothered as this company is on correcting their own mistakes, I can’t imagine I’d be impressed with their service. I’m actively looking for another provider.

  17. Wow. These comments surprised me. I’ve been with Horace Mann for 14 years and not had an issue with them. I’ve filed three claims with them during the time. Each time, I had a check in hand within one week. I’ve never talked to rude representatives, and they have always called me back the same day on the rare times I had to leave a message.

    I just think people looking for reviews should also hear from customers who have not had these types of experiences.

    • I am very unhappy with Horace Mann. I have full coverage Auto Insurance. My friend was driving my car and was pulled over and the dea said they had a search warrant for my car when in fact they never showed it. When requested, they could not find anything in my car at the scene so they decided to seize it. They had my car for 3 weeks, totally destroyed the inside, and never found any wrongdoings. I filed a claim and they would not cover it. So any government official can take your car and completely destroy it even though you are innocent and it’s too bad for you. You have to pay for any damage that they do to your car. My car is destroyed and Horace Mann is denying the claim even though there was no criminal activity. This is crazy.

    • I’ve been with them around 10 years. I’ve never had an issue until recently when I filed a claim after being rear-ended in a hit and run. Its been well over a month and I have yet to actually speak to my adjuster. If you would have asked me in December, I would have told you they were fine. My glass claim 6 years ago was handled in a timely manner. Now, I’m looking to switch companies as a result of the lack of care or concern. It’s not about people only seeing the bad. This is my ACTUAL experience after 10 years with the company. I’m very disappointed that I can’t get a resolution and have to fight with my own company to get my medical expenses taken care of.

  18. I am a teacher in the public community college system, and I have been with Horace Mann company for 7 years, on a bundle insurance plan, car, life, earthquake, and home insurance. I have had 4 claims with them for repairs in my home and now they are not renewing my policy. I always thought when you get insurance and that insurance policy covers specific damages in your home, therefore you were covered by that policy. That was the case they paid out on all of the claims, but now I have to seek more coverage with another insurance company, at 3 times more rate. No Thank you Horace Mann for not standing by your policy and taking care of teachers, who you claim your company was developed to take care of teachers.

    • Horace Mann is an awful company to deal with. They are very nice when writing a policy to get your business. But don’t have an accident. It’s been a year and I have bill collectors calling and notices in mail. They more than DOUBLED my policy after 1 accident which was a hit and run. Not even my fault. I was recommended by a friend, then I recommended them to a friend. I am cancelling with them and so is my friend.

    • You’ve had HOW MANY CLAIMS? Do you think insurance companies are charitable organizations that aren’t trying to make a profit? Do you not understand that if they continue insuring poor risks that they will be out of business and then everyone will pay higher rates? I’m sure you’re a great person, but all insurance is about risk management. Try and find ANY company that wouldn’t non renew you for 4 claims in such a short period. Companies only have 2 mechanisms to protect themselves; raising rates and non renewal. If you were a stock holder and you knew the company was losing money because it didn’t exercise prudent risk management would you stay invested? All companies have similar policies.

      • 1 claim! Never had an accident in 50 years where I was at fault. Only 2 in 50 years where I was hit from the back!

  19. Today I received a letter informing me that my Horace Mann policy was denied for renewal. I was so excited about having an auto policy that was geared towards benefiting workers in the field of education, as we are limited in so many other financial aspects. Of course I called immediately to inquire why they would cancel me so definitively. It’s seemed unfair. The rep I spoke with was very polite. She explained that I wa being dropped via the underwriter’s determination, because they’d had to pay for a couple of parking fender benders and getting my keys out of my locked car twice. I’m not suggesting I didn’t goof on those mistakes. I’m being a lot more careful these days, but I thought those were services I was paying to have covered. I didn’t know I would be given the proverbial boot for using them. Such a disappointment!

    • They are good when getting your business. You are okay as long as you are paying your insurance month after month. But, please don’t file a claim!

    • I have had 2 accidents and am 52 years old, plus, drive for a living. HM is denying renewal because I did not send in a survey done by a 3rd party vendor. And, they never notified my local agent, whom I love, of what they were doing. Fine, you don’t want to renew my auto policy? Well, I’ll withdraw all of my other policies as well and move on, aling with filing a complaint with the NC Insurance Commisioner. I urge ANYONE with issues with them to please file formal complaints in your respective states.

      • OMG, I just received a survey from them within the last day. I will not be completing it. I did file a complaint with the SC Department of Insurance.

  20. I got my payment notice 3 days after the due date, when I went online to pay it off I was charged another $10 “late fee”. I called them to have them fixed it for me, they deleted the $10 late fee since it wasn’t my fault, Meanwhile I changed my correspondences to “paper less”. The next payment notice I got I went to pay and I see there is another $10 late payment fee while my payment is not due for another 15 days. I call them and ask them what is the extra charges for? They have never deleted that $10 in the first place. I spent hours on the phone with different agents until they promised it will be deleted. We’ll see. This kind of behavior makes me doubt their honesty.

  21. I have experienced a whole lot of bull with Horace Mann. My rates on my homeowner’s policy skyrocketted after Hurricane Katrina. Eventhough, a limited amount wss awarded for damages, they paid a little more for another disaster that occured. The last 2-3 years, I noticed my rates were steeping higher. I called to get a review as to why I was paying for coverage so high. I didn’t get a review. My insuramce started out with 120,000, the next year, it was 160,000. It is now 240,000. REALLY!!! I finally received a review. They acknowledged that the covetage was too high and put it back to 160,000. It caused me financial difficulties resulting in a balance on my part of 800 dollars. I asked them to write off the 800 dollats being that you have been raising my coverage to higher coverages needed. They said that the dwelling policy has an inflation rate to increase at anytime. I feel that I am being tedlined because of my zip code. I h ave been a loyal customer for almost 20 years. I pay monthly installments. Not only do they expect me to pay the 800 dollars , but 1200 dollars up front by tonight or I will no longer have insurance. They were waiting on information back and forth from the agent to home office to remedy the situation. They didn’t get information on their end to put it back on the monthly bill and get the corrected amont from the 230000, so I have to suffer. This is horrible customer service. Where is your loyalty to your customers? My fault for sticking around by being loyal. I am not happy. I now will mot have any insurance because of their misake. WOW! Thanks, HORACE MANN for NOTHING!!!!!!!!

  22. I have had the worst experience with this company since day one, when I became a member in May. Every time I called, I had an issue. Policy was once canceled and no one could tell me why. When my policy was canceled and then reinstated, I received a letter letting me know what my payments would be in August. I called and spoke with [Redacted] and asked him if the letter meant that I wouldn’t have to make another payment until August and he stated yes, looks like they skipped your July payment due to the mix up about the policy being canceled. (This was in June) While on the phone with him, I asked him to change my pay dates until the 15th of the month, b/c I started a new job, but the dates were never changed in the system which in turn caused me $173.00 in bank fees.I was told by [Redacted] that I would pay one thing when I added my new car, but when I added the car, [Redacted] gave me a totally different amount. The policy went up over $200 more. Every time I called and had an issue, some reps were very nice, but some were just rude as if they were tired of hearing my complaints. I have nothing good to say about this company at all. One of my friends recommended this company to me. I wished I never listened to her. I will not recommend anyone to this company ever and I hope that you guys can get it together and work on your customer service. One of the nasty reps told me she could play the recording back on certain things, but she never did. It would be a good training tool for you guys to play some of my recordings back to see all the hell I went through. I hope no one else has to experience what I’ve gone through with you all.

    • I experienced some of the same things as you. They quoted me a figure to settle a claim, then changed the amount to $2,000 – $3,000 less. When I refused that amount, it was a loooong time before I heard from them. I kept getting bills and calls from bill collectors for bills they would not pay. I scanned and emailed them to Horace Mann.
      I too, was referred by a friend but wished I had never heard of them. I had referred a friend and she said she would call them but it was a long time before anyone would return her calls. We both are leaving them.
      Sorry you had such a hard time. They need to stop it. People pay their premiums on time but get very poor service.

  23. I have never purchased Horace Mann insurance, but have been interviewed for two jobs at their headquarters. Both times the hiring manager contacted me and asked me to apply. Both times, I was not hired. Something is wrong with a business that reaches out to an individual (that is probably overqualified for the job), asks that person to apply, not once but twice, puts them through the interview process and then determines they are not a good “fit” for the company. It’s mean, it’s a form of harassment, and it ultimately says something about the lack of truthfulness or integrity within the company. Any company that is willing to “toy” with the life and livelihood of a person is not a company that I would trust to “protect” my possessions.

    • All I know is after 29 years of insurance with Horace Mann with [Redacted] in Burlington. North Carolina, he had our house valued at $275,000 over the value of our home. After 29 years of deducting homeowners insurance directly from my checking account, only to find out we were being grossly overcharged for 29 years. When I approached [Redacted] in Burlington North Carolina, he gave a candid response was ” we only go back one year” what a dishonest representative and truly not to be trusted. How disappointing! Shame on you Horace Mann.

They will lie, you pay your insurance like clock work but I was in an accident over a year ago and They have not paid my bills. I have bill collectors calling all times of morning and evening and sending notices. The accident was not my fault, it was a hit and run, Horace Mann more than doubled my insurance. When I called to ask why it doubled, no one answered the phone for a few days. When I did talk to my agency the explanation was as clear as mud. Then it was stated to me that I can’t find anything cheaper. Duh, I have found 3 companies at least $40-$50 cheaper!!!
          They quoted me one settlement amount initially then called back later to offer me $3,000 less. I would not settle and reminded him of what he quoted me initially. Then his boss called to off er $2,000 less than what was initially offered. All I can say is I think they are crooked Horace Mann. They were recommended by a friend and I was stupid to change. My bad!
          I could go on and on.

  24. Worst insurance company that I have ever dealt with. You people NEVER and I mean NEVER answer the phone. When I got into a car accident, one of your customers hit me, and I had to deal with you people. Worst insurance when it comes to customer care. I would advise that you hire people who actually are in their office during office hours.

    • Amen!! My boyfriend had to total his truck out due to them downgrading it to $706 when it was worth over $1800. A guy pulled out in front of him and he only gets some rear scrapes while my boyfriend gets the damage. He luckily could drive away but in the end he gets the short end of the stick while the guy who pulled out is off easy. We’d call them multiple times and no answer. They called once a month since March. When we finally had the guy pick up his truck, they put the wrong truck on the paperwork and spelled my boyfriend’s name wrong after we repeated it and texted it to them countless times. We are now waiting on that $706 they owe us. His truck and title are in their hands and we are stuck waiting on the money. To make matters worse they said it would be here yesterday. It didn’t show up so we asked them for the tracking number and it was a fake one that didn’t exist. This is the most unprofessional insurance we ever had to deal with. Never use them even if they were your last resort!

  25. I also have had abysmal service from Horace Mann. Even though we have retained them for our insurance needs for over 50 years, their agents come and go with amazing rapidity. I believe I can count at least 56 agents in the past three years or so, and it’s difficult to even get customer service on the phone..endless wait times, no apologies, the works.

    About the only reason we stay with them is for the price; have not found a better deal.

    Just wish they valued their victims…. oops, customers…more!

  26. I’ve been a loyal customer for over 10 years with multiple policies. Horace Mann customer services has gone horrible, I’m planning on leaving – thank you for your suggestions for better insurance companies. HM constantly move case representatives, contradict each other, drag cases, back out of the promises.
    The last draw was when they refused to pay for the car seats that the police officer recommended changing after the accident and when I talked to the representative, she told me that it would be no problem, I should just go ahead, buy new ones and send her photos of old and new ones. I submitted photos, she acknowledged the receipt.. and disappeared… several months later I reached out for a follow up just to find out that representative is on maternity leave, so talked to a new one, who told me that my policy does not cover a replacement.

  27. I was in an accident two weeks ago and was at fault. It took a full week for them to finally call me to tell me that my car was totaled. I have been handed off to numerous people, all of whom never answer their phones, never reply to my voicemails, and have no problem telling me that they “work for a different part of the insurance company” and hand me off to yet another person. I have only spoken to an actual person about 5 times even though I have called and left 20 or so voicemails. I also spent $450 on brand new tires 3 months ago. Horace Mann is only giving me $81 even though they state that my tires are in exceptional condition. This company is extremely money hungry and do not want to pay for any damages! As soon as this whole thing is finished, I’m finding another insurance company.

    • Yes! I had this issue as well. They never answer the phone! I had to deal with several different people and not one knew anything about my claim. Worst insurance I’ve dealt with.

  28. I had an older woman client call me and tell me she had an accident December 16th, 2014. I called around the 20th to make sure the auto body shop had picked up the vehicle and was working on it. To my surprise the auto body shop told her that they wouldn’t be able to work on it until after the New Year. My client was 78 and living alone. This wouldn’t due at all. I called the auto body shop and told them that if they didn’t get her vehicle picked up and worked on immediately I would find someone who would. They were there in a matter of hours. Customers, no matter who your insurance company is, call the agent and get them to help you. As agents we assume everything is going along well and it is only that I my client was older that I called back. Much to my surprise she told me she had lost her husband last year and her two sons just a few months previously. This is one sweet woman who needed help. Please, always let your agent know if there is a problem, whether it be in claims or someplace else. Have a great day!!!

  29. My truck was in an accident with another person who had no insurance. His vehicle was stolen and he carried no insurance at all. Horace Mann kept asking me to get a hold of this owner so they could get the claim off their desk. The accident happened the third week of September and they couldn’t find him until the third week of October but then he was paid. This company did well, but I realize that clients have to help. The owner of the stolen truck was afraid he would go to jail for not having insurance and so wouldn’t answer the calls or call back. Really had to work to track him down as he left the city after the accident.

  30. Wow! THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST COMPANY IT HAS EVER BEEN MY DISPLEASURE TO USE FOR ANY REASON!!! I had an accident 24 days ago in a car I bought 2 months ago. State police report states that it wasn’t my fault. A lady pulled out in front of me. It took Horace Mann 23 days to tell me that my car was totaled. It took Progressive 2 days when I had an accident many years ago, and they had a check in my hands for the actual value of the car within the week. I’ve been renting a car this entire time on my own dollar until they decide. Just today, Horace Mann sent me my settlement price of $17,000. I bought the car for $21,000 just 2 months ago, and it’s listed on Kelly Blue Book AND NADAguides for $20, 350. Where are they getting that price of $17,000? In the last 24 days, I have had 6 different people calling me from the company handling the claim. I don’t who is who anymore. I just called all 6 of them on a Thursday at 1 pm and nobody is answering their phones. In fact, whenever I’ve called anybody in the company (at least 30 times over the past 3 weeks), nobody has EVER answered their phones. They might call you the next day, but sometimes 2 days. Even though the accident wasn’t my fault, they have never offered to get money from the other insurance company to pay for my rental. Please find another insurance company! Don’t try to save a buck. These guys are HORRIBLE!

    • I can for sure back this up. I was in an accident where Horace Manns client ran a red light and t-boned me. Their client admitted to the police at the scene she was guilty. It took 2 months to get a valuation report done on the car and I still haven’t received my settlement check from when their partnered scrapper took the car a week ago.

      They NEVER answer the phone or e-mails and seemingly take time off whenever they please, Fridays and Mondays.

      This entire settlement should’ve taken 1 week tops from police report to settlement check in my hand and it has taken 2.5 months. Worst insurance company I have ever had to deal with. I hope they go bankrupt.

  31. The one auto claim we had was resolved quickly. I called my agent and he said'”That’s why you have insurance.” I am shopping around for ways to lower my premiums but his service may ultimately keep my business with Horace Mann.

  34. I was in a car accident March 30th and have gotten nothing but the run around with this company! The accident was not my fault, the other person is insured by Horace Mann. After being told my car would be considered totalled and a check would be issued to me, I waited two weeks and finally called them to find out that I needed to send them something(which I already did) when the lady looked in her email she realized she had gotten it and didnt realize it and a check would be issued that day and over night delivery. After not receiving my check I called and she assured me that it was sent! Today is now a week and no check! I have been told Horace Mann insurance has a very big issue with paying out what is owed to people and from what I’m seeing I agree! My car was destroyed byone of their clients and yet I have ggotten nothing and no return phone calls! What kind of company do you people run?!! Its ridiculous!

    • I, too, am experiencing the run around by Horace Mann. I was rear ended by one of their customers. They have bounced my claim to a third representative now. They do not return calls ad claim they did not receive an email from the body shop adding on more time to this claim. When you call, you get voicemails and no returns from them. I will also be calling BBB and checking with an attorney.

  35. Terrible service. By looking at all of these reviews, I find it hard to believe they are still in business. No return phone calls or emails. Very poor customer service. Have been with them for many years but am now ready to kiss them goodbye. Don’t go with them and be sure to include your lawyer in all transactions.

  36. I have been trying to get a quote from Horace man insurance (wasilla, ak) and website for a week now. I have left numerous voice mails and even talked to the receptionist. They have not returned one call or email. If it us that hard to talk to an agent about a new policy I can’t imagine what its like when you have a claim. So no thank you Horace man and I will not refer you. I will also talk to the Realtor that referred me and tell them about bad experience.

    • Worst auto insurance ever…why…we have a claim and they keep telling us that they are still working on it and they know exactly that after two year we will not be able to do a thing…they lag on the information and do not tell us until right at the two year ended and tell us how much they can give to us…which is like were getting almost nothing back. We paid them to make sure we have good coverage and work for us but end up they don’t want to paid us. Its impossible that they find out the amount to distribute out right at the two year end. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!

  37. In 22 years I have spent a fortune on Horace Mann Homeowners Insurance but they are about to get richer without me. They want double what other mainstream insurers want, and I haven’t even made a claim. Sup? I’m outa there.

  39. I have been a member with Horace Mann Insurance since 2007 and have had a terrible experience.
    They are suppose to represent educators and administrators and that is not the case at all. This has been the worse experience with an Insurance company. I was in a wreck and was not at fault and have two policies with them and now they refuse to assist, stating i didn’t have collision coverage on the car that was wrecked, however in Good Faith I was sure the agent had full coverage on both vehicles. Now I am without a vehicle and Horace Mann Insurance refuses to help at all. I have paid my premiums through payroll deductions and now that I need their assistance, This is the treatment I received.

    • I wish you all of the best, as I experienced a major catastrophe, provided out of pocket expenses, & begged for the Insurance Commissioner’s help, & never saw a dime of the several thousand dollars that was due to me. Hire a lawyer before it is too late, to at least provide you direction & a state of mind.

  41. Jan 27th an insured of Horace Manns ran a red light and struck my vehicle. Their insured acknowledged fault. There is no question of liability. Four days and eighteen phone calls later-…. nothing. Eighteen phone calls and have never had anyone actually answer their phone. Think about that. I was taught that if it is predictable it is not random.

    An adjuster came by and totaled my vehicle. HM has not offered settlement or issued payment. Since then I have been ticketed and received a ‘red tag’ – meaning my vehicle will be towed. Five of the eighteen calls are to a ‘claims manager’ none of which have been returned. Every out going voice mail message says that your phone call will be returned same day. I have received one return phone call from an adjuster saying that my claim has been re-assigned.

    If you need insurance to protect your asset base from a potential liability suit I would not recommend this carrier. Their claims handling process will, in my opinion and experience, increase the likelihood of being sued. I have filed a complaint with the BBB. Next two phone calls are to the insurance commissioner and my attorney.

    • Good job. I wish everyone had the resources to get an attorney or a lawyer involved because if you have or are dealing with Horace Mann you will need one.

  42. Horace Mann is the WORST company to deal with. Rude claim adjusters (dude hung up on me), bad service (if you’re not able to pick up the phone when they call, don’t expect to reach anyone that day – leave a message and they will get back with you tomorrow!!!), refuses to put you in a comparable vehicle (you have a mid-size car, we’ll put you in a compact. You have a large SUV, we’ll put you in a compact), refuses to make repairs to pre-accident condition (we can’t see how a 40 mile per hour collision would knock your front end out of alignment?) and an oldie but goodie – Check is in the mail!!!!!!!!

    I’m not a “lawyer up” type of guy and just want to settle the claim quickly and amicably, but they refuse and want to argue over everything.

    Advise: DON’T deal with these adjusters, at least not the ones in Cary, NC. Get yourself a lawyer from the get go and save yourself the time and hassle. Don’t try to be fair and do what’s best for both parties – get a lawyer that knows how to handle companies like this and SUE, SUE, SUE!!!!!

  43. I recently had a homeowners claim for water damage to a basement resulting from a broken pipe. They told me that it was from ground water and refused to pay anything at all. When I stated that I wished to appeal the finding I was told that I could not appeal.

  44. VERY DISSAPPOINTED with this Horace Mann Car Insurance Company. I called them in August 2013 about the accident in my car. I needed the car fixed or replaced and till this day I have no Status. Till this day with no Status.

  45. Wow, I’m glad Horace Mann has a nice S&P rating. Of course they got it by screwing their customers. I have been a member for nearly 10 years. I had a break in to my house. They found every way not to pay. Deductible, heavy depreciation, and limiting coverage to a maximum dollar amount per category. Then, after I made the claim, they cancelled my policy… Good for their profits, and S&P. Too bad they don’t care about the customer they way they do their financial ratings.

    • I am going through the same issue with them now. Someone broke into my home while I was at work. I called the police and filed a claim the same day it happened. It is has been a month and the claim adjuster has never been out to my home. They told me when I made the claim that the adjuster would be out to my home to look at the damages within three days. I have called my claims representative over 20 times and she only returned my calls once to tell me that I needed to fax her a copy of my police report and an estimate for damages. This was two weeks after the claim was made. The night I made the claim the claims agent requested the police report number, which I gave to her, because she said she needed it to get a copy of the police report. I had to do all the “leg work” myself. My thing is when we’re they going to tell me I had to gather and fax all that info to them. In the meantime, my daughter and I are living in our home in fear because anyone can now enter my home through the broken garage door and gain access to the dwelling area of our home. I have been with Horace Mann for ten years. I never had a claim. They have received thousands of dollars from me. Now it appears as if they don’t want to pay on the claim. I am dumping them when this claim is settled.

  46. I am so exhausted dealing with Horace Mann – they used to be so good! I started with them in 1996. In the early 2000’s I was surprised at how much they were increasing but I was told it was because values were going up. I then switched to allstate early this year. My mortgage company had already sent the payment to them so I had to pay in full for my new policy with Allstate. I received a call from Horace Mann about a month ago about renewing my policy. I said that I didn’t have insurance with them – I provided a policy from Allstate.
    At the same time I discovered that someone at the county had entered a typo back in 2002 on the square footage of my home. This is why my rate had been so high – they were using a much higher sq ftg to calculate replacement. So for ten years I was paying a 1000 year extra for something I shouldn’t have ( I had always assumed they were using the sq ftg I signed for when I purchased the original policy )
    Now they are saying they never received my cancellation and I must keep the policy till the end of the term. UGHHH

  47. I am very dissatisfied with Horace Mann insurance. They took over last year and instead of making using a PayFlex card easy, they make it a chore. They want me to send birth certificates showing my children are mine and then have been asking me to send an explanation of benefits each time I use my PayFlex debit card. What’s the point? I should simply submit each bill to them personally. This company is a ridiculous waste of my time. The company I used for two years previously asked for proof of one claim I believe in 24 months. When you are using your PayFlex card to pay obvious medical bills, this amount of work to justify use of my own money is just absurd. I will never get a PayFlex card again if I have to deal with them. I’d rather lose out on the tax savings to avoid all this unnecessary paperwork and my time. I am a very unhappy customer.

  48. Horace Mann created so many problems for our family after we were hit by a tornado. I had to involve my state’s department of insurance to get them to cover our interior flooding resulting from the tornado removing our roof and gutters.

    They only paid out on the tornado-related flood damage because my state has a very active regulatory agency that wasn’t afraid to intervene on my behalf. It took almost a year to resolve our claim, so we had to pay all the contractors out of pocket while we held out for flood repayment.

    After this experience, my uncle (a retired high school principal) called me and said he’d wished he had warned me off them. Many years before I was born his family were denied a just claim.

    Our agent was very friendly when we were buying the insurance, but just threw up his hands when the company categorically denied our claims which were clearly covered under our policy.

    Horace Mann also placed some erroneous information on our insurance record (it’s like a credit report for your insurability) even after they’d agreed to pay our initial claim. It took me over a year to get our record corrected.

    Check your state’s Department of Insurance Complaint list before buying insurance. It should give you an idea who settles fairly and which companies require regulatory intervention to pay contracted services.

    • I can empathize…it is almost as sensible to have no insurance at all, as Horace Mann & every aspect of the company, makes your life & catastrophe worse than the actual event.

  49. My girlfriend had Horace Man auto insurance for almost 40 years, when she had an accident they offered her $900 for a Tahoe worth around $6000. After complaining they sent the comparison vehicles they used. They subtracted $600 for cracked leather seats, about $1500 for a slight dent, $1400 for high mileage which 2 of their comparison trucks also had. They even took value off for the tires not being new which were better than the trucks they used for comparison. I would suggest extreme caution when dealing with Horace Mann.

  50. VERY dissatisfied with Horace Mann Insurance. I have been a member since 1980, have only two claims filed against me; they paid $1500 out once in 33 years. I have never had a ticket. But because the two claims were in two years and one involved a child on a bike that was not hurt, they are dropping me. They tell me I am high risk and I will not be able to find anyone to insure me. They want to sell me insurance from a sister company that will run $300 per month.

    • Please keep looking! There are better companies out there. I was fine before a friend recommended me to Horace Mann. They gave me an unbelievable rate. Then doubled after one accident that was not my fault. I will remember that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is not true!!!

  51. VERY dissatisfied with Horace Mann Insurance. Pay the premiums for years and then when you need to file claims what happens – cancel your insurance of course.

    • Cancel or MORE THAN DOUBLE your insurance. It seems like if they pay you, then your insurance sky rockets so they can re-coup that money. Therefore, you actually pay twice. you pay insurance, then pay them back for paying you! Really unfortunate because they are overly nice when you give them your business!

      • Yep. Same thing here. 30 years NEVER a claim, then a tree falls on my house. They were a pain to work with and raised my rates substantially. I am currently researching other insurance options. I can’t believe I got suckered into going with them in the first place!!!
