Cincinnati Insurance was founded in 1950 by a group of four insurance agents, and continues to sell insurance through independent agents to this day. The company continues its focus on local, personal service as a major selling point. Company headquarters is located in Fairfield, Ohio, but they have branch offices located in various locations across the nation.
Cincinnati Insurance is comprised of the following five companies:
- The Cincinnati Insurance Company
- The Cincinnati Casualty Company
- The Cincinnati Indemnity Company
- The Cincinnati Life Insurance Company
- CSU Producer Resources, Inc.
Most of these companies are licensed in all states and the District of Columbia. In addition, the Cincinnati Insurance Company is also licensed in Puerto Rico.
Through the group of companies, Cincinnati Insurance writes personal lines basics, business insurance coverage, and specialty risks as well. The company does not quote or sell insurance online, instead they use independent agents.
Cincinnati offers a basic lineup of personal insurance products, including the big three: auto insurance, home insurance, and life insurance. They also write a wide variety of business insurance products.
Cincinnati Insurance offers a solid auto insurance program with all of the basics plus a list of included features and optional add-ons. One of the added features strongly promoted on the website is the enhanced rental car coverage. This coverage protects drivers in a rental car for liability and damage to the vehicle without a deductible.
The Personal Auto Plus add-on package includes a list of additional features such as:
- Air Bag Replacement
- Safety Restraint Benefit – which doubles coverage for injuries in which the driver or passenger was wearing a safety belt
- Transportation Expenses
- Towing and Labor
- Deductible Waiver
- Supplementary Payments for death of policyholder or spouse
- Trip Interruption
- Lock Replacement
- Child Safety Seat Replacement
- Glass Deductible Waiver
Cincinnati’s auto program also offers:
- Replacement Cost Plus
- Customizing Equipment Coverage
- Gap Loan or Lease Coverage
- Collector and Antique car insurance
There are a number of common discounts available, such as auto/home, multi-car, good student, and accident free.
Cincinnati Insurance has an extended home insurance program with multiple levels of coverage and a long list of add-ons.
The basic plan is the Executive Homeowner Policy, which covers homes of any value for structure replacement, personal property and personal liability.
There is also a high-value home plan called Executive Classic, designed for homes over $500,000 in value and adding on higher replacement cost, more personal property coverage, and extended limits for water damage and identity theft.
Additionally, Cincinnati covers:
- Rental Homes
- Seasonal/Vacation Homes
- Tenants (Renter’s Insurance)
There are a number of add-ons available, such as:
- Valuable Articles
- Extended Replacement Cost
- Inflation Guard Coverage
- Extended Water Damage
Cincinnati’s life insurance program includes the three main types of life insurance. Term life, Whole life, and Universal life are all available in a variety of benefit levels. There are two different Universal plans available, one that is designed to offer some of the benefits of term life with a permanent plan.
Cincinnati Insurance also offers disability income insurance and annuities.

- Office Operations
- Specialty Programs for companies with specific needs

- Commercial Umbrella
- Worker’s Compensation
- Business Life
Because online quoting is not available, it is not possible for a quick price comparison of Cincinnati Insurance, but as an agent-driven company we would expect commissions to impact rates.
That said, reviews of the company seem to reflect competitive rates and customers pleased with the prices of the products. They may not compete with major direct-buy companies, but appear to offer fair prices to their target market – those who want personal service and will pay a little more for it.
In keeping with their agent-based business plan, Cincinnati Insurance claims can be reported directly through agents. There is also a 24-hour toll-free line: 877-242-2544 through which claims can be reported directly. The lack of online quoting is surprising for such a large company, although there is a policyholder login which may offer claims tracking – this is not made clear on the website.
Life, Worker’s Compensation, and glass-only claims are reported through their own claims phone numbers found on the website.
There is no information on the website regarding how claims are handled, aside from a promise to handle them by seeking coverage and not loopholes to avoid paying. Claims are likely handled in the standard format, with an adjuster assigned and investigating the claim before determining coverage and offering a settlement.
The BBB lists Cincinnati Insurance under its parent company, Cincinnati Financial, and has an A+ rating. The company has been accredited since 1981. There are only a total of 14 complaints registered against the company in the past three years, six of which were closed in the past 12 months. The low number may be a result of confusion between company names, as Cincinnati Insurance policyholders may not leave complaints under the parent company, but even so this is very low.
Other reviews across the Internet reflect generally happy customers, citing fast, fair claims service and good rates. Customers appear to be loyal to the company, often citing 20 or more years with Cincinnati. Minor complaints include rate increases, but overall the company has a very positive reputation.
|Rating Company||Grade||Financial Outlook|
Cincinnati Insurance has a solid financial backing and an excellent reputation. Offering all of the big three along with a few other personal insurance products, they are likely to be a one-stop shop for insurance for most customers. With competitive rates based on customer reviews, Cincinnati Insurance is well worth a look for anyone willing to take the time to obtain quotes directly from an agent.
