One of the biggest property & casualty insurance companies in Massachusetts, Safety Insurance has a solid range of personal and commercial products. This local company focuses on the Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine markets through agents.

Safety Insurance Summary

Safety Insurance was founded in 1979 in Boston, MA. Over the past several decades they have expanded their product lineup as well as their operating territory into New Hampshire and Maine. Safety Insurance has grown to be the second largest local auto carrier in Massachusetts by market share.

In addition to auto insurance, Safety writes home insurance, umbrella insurance, and commercial coverage for businesses. Most products are available in all three states, although coverage details may differ.

Safety Insurance products are sold exclusively through a network of independent agents. Safety Insurance does not offer online quoting, however, the website does offer a customer support system that allows policyholders to log-in and manage account information.

Insurance Products

Safety Insurance writes a lineup of personal and commercial lines policies. While they are not quite a one-stop shop, they do cover the basics, with the notable exception of life insurance.

Auto Insurance

Safety writes auto insurance in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. Their policies include basic coverage with a few upgrade packages that can be added to for enhanced features. These upgrade packages differ depending on the state.

Massachusetts:

For Massachusetts, Safety Insurance offers two package upgrades, Safety Shield and Safety Shield Plus.

Safety Shield adds the following upgrades:

  • Disappearing deductible
  • Rental vehicle loss of income coverage
  • Guaranteed replacement cost
  • Personal property coverage
  • Emergency travel expenses coverage
  • Supplemental towing and labor
  • Air bag mechanical failure
  • Extended substitute transportation coverage

Safety Shield Plus adds everything in the Safety Shield package, as well as:

  • Accident forgiveness
  • Extended personal property coverage
  • Pet medical
  • Seat belt coverage
  • Bail Bonds

New Hampshire & Maine:

For New Hampshire & Maine, Safety Insurance offers only the Safety Shield package, and coverage differs.

The package includes:

  • Collision waiver of deductible
  • Full glass coverage
  • Emergency travel expenses coverage
  • Airbag mechanical failure
  • Extended substitute transportation coverage
  • Lock In Value (Guaranteed Replacement Cost)

Loan or lease gap coverage is available in both states as an add-on.

There are a variety of discounts available, including multi-policy, which vary slightly between the two states, student discounts, loyalty discounts, and more. Discount percentages differ between states as well.

Home Insurance

Safety writes homeowner’s insurance in all three states with the following coverage level options available, building on standard homeowner’s coverage:

  • Safety Select
  • Supreme
  • Supreme Plus
  • Complete

Each level has different coverage and features. Safety also writes a home insurance policy for condo owners, designed to meet their particular needs.

Dwelling Fire policies are also available to cover non-owner occupied homes; these policies provide coverage for landlords.

Auto/home discounts are available with all home insurance types, but the discount is much larger for homeowner’s than for dwelling fire.

Additional Products

Umbrella Insurance

Safety writes personal umbrella and commercial umbrella in all three states. Coverage limits from $1 million up to $5 million are available for added liability beyond the limits of underlying policies.

Commercial Insurance

Safety writes Business Owner’s policies, Commercial Auto, and Commercial Package (package only available in Massachusetts) policies to meet the needs of a variety of business types.

Safety Insurance Rates

Safety does not offer online quoting which makes it difficult to obtain easy comparisons to other companies. Quotes are only available through local agents.

As a local insurance company selling policies through agents, Safety is unlikely to be the cheapest insurer on the block; agent commissions are usually a sign of somewhat higher rates. They do offer plenty of discount options and have a pretty high discount for auto/home bundling, therefore rates will be far more competitive for those who choose to insure both with Safety.

Safety is likely most competitive with insurance companies that are also regional, rather than large national companies.

Claims

Claims can be filed with Safety one of three ways: through the agent, by calling their 24-hour toll free line 1-800-951-2100, or with the online claim reporting form, which is located in the customer account section of the website. The online reporting option puts Safety ahead of many regional insurers, and even some national ones; this is a feature today’s insurance customer expects to see.

Safety also offers their VIP Claims service, which is a start-to-finish service designed to make claims handling easier. Customers can drop off their vehicle at a VIP claims center, where the company can arrange to have a rental car ready. Safety will handle everything until the car is ready for pickup, usually within a week.

Drive-in appraisals are also available at Safety’s VIP claims centers. Customers can also choose to have repairs done at a non-affiliated repair center, or simply accept a settlement check.

Safety’s website offers a claims FAQ section for different types of claims to help walk customers through the process and answer questions.

Consumer Research and Complaints

Safety Insurance has an A+ rating with the BBB and has been accredited since 2009. There are 31 complaints against the company in the past three years, with five of them closed in the past 12 months. Those numbers are low for a company of this size.

There are several negative reviews on Yelp, peppered with a few positive ones, and most of them focus on claims service. Complaints cite difficulty getting a hold of claims representatives. Some appear to deal with issues that are related to agents, which doesn’t necessarily speak to the company itself.

Overall, the negative reviews do not appear in large enough numbers to be of serious concern, and there are some positive reviews to offset them. There are not any major red flags are raised in the reviews.

  1. My husband had them for car insurance.

    We decided to add me to the policy.

    Well we were told everything was all set and I was added to his policy.

    A month later I am pulled over and my car is being towed because I don’t have any car insurance.

    After running around between the insurance agent and state police proving I had insurance the whole time.

    They never sent anything to the RMV which they literally did 2 seconds after we called them as soon as they opened.

    Why couldn’t they do that a month ago?

    I was late for work at my new job, had to pay $200 to get my car back from a tow that didn’t have to happen, the tow company scraped up my bumper and I have to still take a day off and spend it in court.

    I didn’t even do anything wrong.

    We called the agent a few times to make sure everything was all set when we added my car in the policy and they told us yes.

    Which was a lie because it wasn’t. My policy for the year is $700.

    This one day has already cost me double this. You can’t even trust someone to do their job.

  2. DO NOT get insurance thru this company.. was with them for 5 years. & no car accidents. never missed a payment. I went to go pay my bill on time as i always do yesterday. was told my licence is suspend. so next day i pay my stuff to get my licence back. not even 24 hours an they cancel me. An will not reinstate me either. Now how much sense does that make. your going to get rid of a loyal customer. maybe if i were a bad driver they would have kept me. your loss not mine. found a cheaper company.. look around an shop. believe these people that are writing these comments. no good

  3. Service is awful. I am, trying file a 3rd party claim against one of their drivers and have currently been on hold for 48 minutes. The only person that I have talked to is the operator when I first placed the call. Since then it has been nothing but the same 16 bars of some Kenny G-esque smooth jazz and voice recordings about how fantastic this company is. I cant wait to see how responsive they are to my claim against their at fault driver… If they ever answer.

    I would avoid doing business with this company if you can.

  4. Absolutely terrible customer service. No one ever picks up the phone and they never get back to you. Have been waiting for a week to open a claim after an accident with someone who had Safety and it wasn’t my fault. Pretty sure after I suffer through opening a claim I will have to wait for a week or two to get appraised. In the meantime my car is wrecked by their irresponsible driver!

  5. Not happy with safety insurance at all. I had an accident (not my fault) and they take there sweet time getting back to you with the status of your claim and when they can send out an appraiser.. Yet if my payment was late they would cancel me in a minute….. Horrible company to deal with…
