Oklahoma-based Old Surety Life operates with a faith and family approach to providing insurance. Although the name implies a life insurance company, Old Surety’s focus appears to be Medicare Supplement.

About Old Surety Life

There is very little information in regards to the history of Old Surety. The website states that they have been in business since 1932, with headquarters in Oklahoma City.

The mission statement for the company indicates a Christian faith-based background, which will likely appeal to those who prefer a company that shares those values.

Old Surety sells its policies through independent agents across the country. Currently, the only product listed on the website is Medicare Supplement.

Old Surety Medicare Products

In keeping with the minimally informative nature of the rest of the website, Old Surety offers only basic information in regards to their plans.

The company offers standardized Medicare plans A, C, and F. A is the most basic plan, covering basic coinsurance amounts. Plan F offers the most comprehensive coverage, paying for most out of pocket expenses. C, the only other plan offered out of 11 possible standard plans, lands somewhere in between.

Old Surety directs visitors to the government’s Medicare page for more information about the plans.

It comes as no surprise that Old Surety does not offer online quoting. Although they have a chart outlining the basics of the Medicare Supplement plans they offer, rates are not listed.

This company is very much an in-person focused insurer, so it makes sense that they want potential customers to call in for a quote or reach out to an agent. It seems unlikely that they earn much business by way of Internet searches.

Old Surety does not offer much in the way of claim information. There is a claims forms page, which lists only dental, hearing and vision forms; this is strange considering the website doesn’t list any such products.

There is no information offered on Medicare claims, although most will go through the provider directly, so this is not unusual. It does not appear that Old Surety has a policyholder login area, further indicating that they operate in an old-fashioned way and do not rely much on internet services.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Old Surety has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. As of the time of this review, there are no complaints on file over a three-year period.

There are five Google reviews of Old Surety, and all but one are very positive. The single one-star review does not offer a comment to explain the rating, while the rest include praise for excellent customer service.

The company’s Facebook page has 17 five-star reviews. All of the reviews are glowing and again focus on excellent customer service. According to reviewers, Old Surety pays claims without issue and it is easy to get a real person on the phone.

The Bottom Line

Those in search of an old school, agent-based insurance company with strong Christian values are likely to find Old Surety a good bet. Their rates may not be competitive with larger companies, but they appear to make up for it with very personal service.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. I found out that issue age vs attained age is largely irrelevant.

The issue age will give you a single large increase in most years.

Attained age will give you two smaller increases, one based on age and one based on claims.

Given that prices increase the same every year for medical costs, these two are very likely to equal the same amount over time.

  2. My Old Surety Plan F premium increased 20% in the first 3 years I had it (2016-2019).

So much for an “Issue Age” policy!

I dropped them this year and got an issue age Plan G for 2/3 the price from Lumico.

Fortunately, I passed underwriting but many people would not and would be stuck with these premium increases.

  3. I live in NC and am also looking for a G plan like Joel. The monthly rate for Old Surety’s issue age plan according to the NC website is only $116/month which is cheaper than most the attained age plans. My only concerns are claim service and financial stability. However, since the reviewer found no complaints against the company, the choice of Old Surety seems to be a no brainer if the rates on the NC website are accurate.

  4. I am looking for a Medigap plan G from Old Surety. They have started offering this plan recently in NC. It is an Issue Age policy which does not increase premiums due to age. Their cost is well below most major providers. Combined with the minimal raise in the future, the fact that their plan has to be the same as all G plans this is a very attractive Medicare provider.
Your information on the lack of complaints against the company provides more assurance that this is a jewel yet to be discovered by baby-boomers looking for Medigap coverage.
