Physicians Plus is a health insurance plan provider in Wisconsin, serving their local area with a variety of plans. The company is part of Quartz Health, a branded group of Wisconsin health insurance companies that have formed a partnership.

About Physicians Plus

Founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 1986, Physicians Plus serves southern Wisconsin with HMO health plan options. The company partnered with Meriter-UnityPoint health to provide medical services to plan members, and also partnered with other local health systems.

In 2015 Physicians Plus signed a new agreement with UW Health, restoring plan member access to their services and also restoring some of the company’s success; problems with UW Health access had resulted in a loss of membership over several years.

As of October, 2017, Physicians Plus has been a part of plan administrator Quartz Health. The Quartz brand was created out of a partnership with two other health plans – Gundersen Health Plan and Unity Health – and associated health systems. The brand was created with the goal of improving access and administration processes; all three companies still underwrite their own policies directly.

Physicians Plus Medicare

Physicians Plus does not offer Medicare Advantage or Part D coverage, but the company does have a Medicare Supplement plan available. The plan follows the state of Wisconsin’s standards, which differ from those used by most other states. There are no letter-coded plans in Wisconsin.

Medicare Select is an HMO plan that pays for most of the out of pocket costs not paid for under Original Medicare. It covers Part A and B deductibles as well as coinsurance and the cost of the first three pints of blood each year.

The plan also adds coverage for treatments that have limited benefits under Medicare, such as kidney transplant and breast reconstruction. It also includes coverage for foreign travel emergency medical needs.

The plan is comprehensive and similar to what would be a Plan F in other states.

At the time of our review the Physicians Plus website was not functioning properly, and as a result we were not able to get a rate quote for their Medicare Supplement plan.

In the past, Physicians Plus has offered a reasonable rate on their Medicare Supplement plan, given the comprehensive coverage they provide. It is important to note that this an HMO plan which means your provider network is limited to those in-network.

Physicians Plus handles claims directly with the provider in most cases, which is how all health insurance companies handle billing. The insured should not need to be involved in submitting claims in most cases, although in some situations it may be necessary to pay up front and submit for reimbursement, such as in foreign travel emergency situations.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Physicians Plus has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only one complaint on file and only one review left on the page. This one review happens to be on the subject of Medicare Supplement insurance; the reviewer states that she has had difficulty obtaining referrals to in-network doctors since the shift to Quartz.

There are three Yelp reviews, all of which are negative and result in a one-star rating overall. The newest review on the page is from 2014, which makes the complaints outdated.

We did not find much else on this company; overall there is a low complaint volume here and not much that is recent.

The Bottom Line

Physicians Plus may be a good choice for Medicare Supplement, but we do recommend checking their provider network before signing up, since your existing doctors may not be part of the network. For those that are ok with the limitations of an HMO, they do have a good reputation and are likely a safe bet.
