Retail giant Walmart offers a range of health insurance products on their website via a partnership with Direct Health. The company partners with big names in the insurance and healthcare industry to provide nationwide coverage options.

About Walmart

Walmart is one of the most recognized names in the world, a giant of the big box retailers. The company was started as Walton’s 5& 10, a discount store in the small town of Bentonville, Arkansas. The name change to Wal-Mart took place in the 1960s, and statewide expansion was followed by nationwide and then global.

Walmart today is one of the largest companies in the world; in fact, as of 2016, it was the largest company by revenue. While they are mainly known for discount shopping, they have added a number of services to their stores over the years. These include optician services, pharmacies, and recently, assistance with obtaining healthcare.

Walmart does not actually underwrite any of the insurance policies but offers agents who can assist customers with obtaining health insurance, including overall coverage and supplemental policies. Policies are underwritten by the various health insurance companies with which Walmart partners. These include Humana, Aetna, and United Healthcare.

Customers can speak with an agent in a Walmart store or will be taken to the Direct Health website from the Walmart site to shop plans online.

Walmart Insurance Products

As mentioned above, Walmart does not actually sell insurance directly, nor do they underwrite or administer any of the plans. They offer assistance with choosing a plan through partnerships.

Individual and Family Plans

Through the Direct Health system, Walmart customers can choose from a wide variety of individual and family plans at all levels of coverage and cost. These plans are offered by big names in the health insurance market.

Plans are available from Aetna, Humana, Coventry, United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and more. Because of the wide variety of plans to choose from and the number of different companies involved, it would be helpful to check out our reviews for each company individually and then compare plans and rates.

Medicare

Medicare Advantage, Supplement, and Part D plans are all offered through Walmart’s partnerships. Again, there is a wide range of plan options and multiple different companies offering coverage.

To narrow down your choices, we offer Medicare-specific reviews of multiple companies.

Rates

Because of the number of companies and plans involved, we are unable to offer a rate comparison. In fact, Walmart’s insurance service is really an opportunity to compare plans both by rate and coverage than it is a direct sales system.

Although Walmart is seen as a discount retailer, their insurance service does not actually offer any reduction in rates on health insurance.

Claims

Claims will be handled directly by the insurance company through which you purchase your plan. Walmart itself has no direct connection to these companies and does not handle claims, nor assist with them.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Due to Walmart’s position as an enormous global retailer, it’s very difficult to separate reviews for the company in general from any reviews that might exist regarding their health insurance services.

Of the reviews that mention health insurance, most are referring to the plans offered by the company to its employees.

Our research indicates that Walmart’s insurance agents are generally only available during open enrollment periods, which means customers will not have regular access to the agent. Reviews of the coverage are more likely to be directed to the actual insurance company than towards Walmart.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for assistance shopping for insurance during open enrollment, you can find it at Walmart; you can also shop online at any time. Walmart doesn’t actually provide any coverage or real service outside of assistance choosing a plan. If you feel you need the advice of an agent to pick a plan and are unsure where else to go, the Walmart service might appeal to you. Otherwise, there are plenty of other services providing the same access and information.
