About Country Financial
Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company was founded in 1925; it was created by the Illinois Agricultural Association. As the name implies, the company initially wrote insurance for farmers, a common background for insurance companies. The company eventually came to be known as Country Mutual Insurance, and in 1965 began to expand its product lineup to offer more products to a variety of markets.
Country Mutual expanded beyond Illinois to cover 40 states, and they changed the name to Country Financial in 2008. Thanks to several mergers and acquisitions over the years, they are now a large group of companies with a robust list of products and services across the insurance and financial services spectrum. That includes auto insurance, home insurance, and life insurance as well as retirement planning.
Among those services is Medicare Supplement, which is sold through local agents. Country’s headquarters is located in Bloomington, Illinois.
Country Medicare Supplement Products
Country Financial offers several of the letter-coded Medicare supplement plans that are the same across most states. They provide this coverage in Illinois, and state that they can assist with obtaining coverage in other states as well, which indicates that they only underwrite for their home state.
Plan A is the base plan offered by all insurance companies and pays for Medicare Part A & B coinsurance amounts as well as the first three pints of blood each year. The highest end plan is F, which covers all out of pocket expenses and also covers emergency medical abroad. Country offers this plan both with no deductible as well as the high deductible option that is designed to provide more coverage at a lower price in return for a deductible. This provides a known out-of-pocket amount that can be planned for while allowing lower premiums each month.
In addition to these three options, Country also offers Plans C and D. These plans fall in between A and F in terms of coverage levels. While this is a decent selection of choices, it would be helpful to see a few more options from a company as large as this one.
Country Financial does not offer an online quoting option for Medicare Supplement Insurance, nor is there any sort of rate chart, something we frequently see with Supplement insurance companies. Rates can be obtained by contacting a local agent.
Since Country underwrites Medicare Supplement only in Illinois, their rates are only comparable to other companies offering coverage in the same state.
Although Country Financial has online claims as well as a toll-free number for many of their other products, Medicare Supplement insurance is not mentioned in this section. This is common since Medicare claims are usually handled directly with providers, and do not typically involve the insured.
Country does have a 24/7 customer service line where questions and concerns about Medicare Supplement insurance can be directed.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Country Financial has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there is a total of 38 complaints in the past three years. The complaint volume is low for a company as large as Country and reflects all of their many lines of business. Country Financial is not accredited with the BBB.
There are 62 reviews of Country on Consumer Affairs, and the company has a 1.5-star rating overall. We were unable to find any reviews that relate directly to Medicare Supplement products, and most of the complaints are for auto and home insurance. A few positive reviews are scattered among what are mainly claims issues reviews.
There are 26 reviews on Pissed Consumer with an overall 1.4-star rating. Again, none of these complaints are in regards to Medicare Supplement coverage.
For a company like Country that has a large number of products, it is difficult to relate all of the complaints and comments to any one specific product, particularly a smaller product line. In the case of Country, the overall complaint volume is pretty low, since they are a big company, which is a good sign.
The Bottom Line
Country offers a handful of Medicare Supplement policies to Illinois residents, however, their rates are not available to get a sense of value. They do have a good reputation, and that goes a long way towards filling the gaps in information about their products. They are worth a look for residents of Illinois and especially those that already use Country for other products.
