Zurich Insurance Group is a global insurance company with multiple subsidiaries including one of America’s biggest insurers, Farmers Insurance Group. Their other branches are general insurance, which includes commercial insurance and personal lines, and a life insurance division.

About Zurich Insurance

Zurich was founded in Switzerland as a marine insurance company in 1872 as part of the Schweiz Marine Insurance Company. In 1875 the company moved into accident insurance, taking on the new name of Zurich Transport and Accident Insurance Company. The following years saw expansion with offices opening in Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. By 1880 the company has already left its initial market and quit offering marine insurance.

By the end of the century, the company was operating in even more countries, including Russia and Spain and had changed names again to Zurich General Accident and Liability Insurance Company.

Zurich expanded into the United States in 1912 and Canada in 1923. The following decades saw the company make acquisitions and partnerships, including becoming the official insurer for Ford cars in 1925. In 1955, the company simplified its name, becoming Zurich Insurance Company. By the end of the 20th century, the company was operating in all corners of the world and had acquired Farmers Insurance Group, expanding their U.S. operations and forming Zurich Financial Services as a single holding company.

Zurich today offers a wide variety of insurance products both personal and commercial, sold through a variety of subsidiaries as well as directly. For 2018 they ranked at number 142 on the Fortune Global 500. In the U.S. they do not write personal insurance products directly, but offer commercial insurance through Zurich North America.

Zurich claims can be filed in a variety of ways. Initial claim reports can be submitted using an online form on the company website. The website allows the option to upload claims documents or email them in on an existing claim once it has been initially reported and entered into the claim system. A phone number is also provided for follow up questions, as is a link to find a local claims representative.

The website offers individual claim reporting instructions for each type of policy. And an FAQ section that provides tips for claims. Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Is Zurich a good insurance company? Zurich North America has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and was recently accredited, in 2017. There are 66 complaints against the company in the past three years, which is not a high number for the company’s size. 30 customer reviews on the BBB page result in a 1.5-star rating overall. The negative reviews are mainly focused on claims problems.

There are 57 reviews of Zurich on Consumer Affairs, with a one-star rating overall. Again, this is a low volume of complaints for such a big company. The complaints listed are centered on claims, which is common for such a company.

In general, we found Zurich to have a good reputation, with no red flags or major issues of concern in the reviews.

The Bottom Line

Since Zurich is a commercial insurer with a range of specialty products, it is best to speak with a broker to determine whether or not the company and its products are right for your needs. They do enjoy a solid reputation, a long history, and a stable financial status, so they’re well worth putting on the list.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. Our vehicle was struck by a “Commercial vehicle” from a company that was insured by Zurich.

After submitting the claim the day after the accident, and then providing them with a copy of the accident report (their driver was issued a citation for disregarding a STOP SIGN), our driver’s statement, and the estimate for repairs to our vehicle; they said they would get back to us right away.

2 weeks later I am calling and leaving messages for several days (multiple messages) with the adjuster’s voicemail, which states that she will return my call within 24 hours.

I finally got forwarded to her supervisor who also did not take my call and whose message also said she would return my call in 24 hours.

Finally, I got a call back from her telling me in the last several weeks they were unable to get a statement from their insured’s driver.

Meanwhile, my truck sits in the shop. Her advice to me? Have my insurance provide the needed repairs to get me back on the road.

They know it’s their fault, they have the accident report indicating it is their fault, but some or all of Zurich insurance are too lazy to get the needed statement and get the claim taken care of.

I manage a trucking company with over 100 trucks, and if we are involved in an accident, whether or not we are at fault I have the driver’s written statement and all facts of the case submitted to my insurance company the next day.

If you are looking for quick customer service and someone to answer your phone calls and let you know what is going on in your time of need, don’t look to Zurich…

  2. My buddy is fighting this company right now over an extended warranty he purchased on his truck.

They sent out a claims adjuster, he had no clue what he was even looking at.

They have given several different reasons for why they won’t cover even tho it states they do in his contract.

I sure hope they quit trying to make up excuses and abide by there legal bindings in the contract.

I will keep everyone posted on the outcome.

Zurich North America Insurance is the Worst out there to do business with.

Do not fall for these kind words in this blog but save your money when something comes along your way.

You are better off to throw the money you’re trying to spend on services in the garbage than giving them to these group of disrespectful crooks!!!

  4. Ziti has does not care about its clients nor the bills that they have to pay when they’re out on workers comp

they give you the runaround and doesn’t return phone calls or emails.

It’s been nearly two months and I still have yet to receive a check.
