Georgia-based State Mutual Insurance was created in the 1930s to boost the local economy. The company today focuses on supplemental health insurance products for the senior market.

About State Mutual

In 1937 the Georgia State Legislature licensed 113 insurance agents in an effort to create jobs and improve the economy in the city of Rome. Out of these efforts State Mutual Insurance was born; originally the company chartered in Florida as a result of Georgia’s lack of legal provisions for mutual companies, and later they re-chartered in their home state.

State Mutual was successful and grew steadily, acquiring several other companies in the 1980s. By the 1990s the company had shifted its focus to the senior supplemental insurance market, offering life insurance as well as Medicare Supplement plans.

Today State Mutual is licensed in 44 states as well as the District of Columbia. Their primary products are disease-specific indemnity coverage and Medicare Supplement. They partner with Platinum Supplemental Insurance to market their products across the country.

State Mutual Medicare Supplement

The State Mutual site states that Medicare Supplement is one of their main products, but there is no information whatsoever available on that product. In fact, the site does not describe any of the products beyond mentioning that they are available.

This indicates that State Mutual does not anticipate bringing in much in the way of new business through their company website and likely relies on marketing partners and on local agents to sell products.

In the modern age it is unusual for an insurance company – even a small, agent-drive insurer – to have a complete lack of product information online.

Since all Medicare Supplement providers selling in the states that use the letter coded system, (which is most states) are required to sell Plan A, we can assume this plan is offered by State Mutual. Beyond that we are unable to guess at what they write.

There is contact information on the website that will assist visitors with getting more plan information, but those that are searching online for plan details are likely hoping to find a little more detail without having to make phone calls.

Rates

Not surprisingly we were unable to find any rate information for State Mutual’s products. Rates usually vary from state to state. We assume they can be obtained by sending in a contact request form or calling the company directly, but there is no mention anywhere on the site of how to get a rate quote, nor do they explain how to contact an agent or representative.

Claims

In keeping with the lack of any useful information for customers on the website, there is no mention of claims either. Most health insurance claims are handled directly with providers, so it is really not unusual to have little to no claim information on the website. In this case, State Mutual’s lack of detail is fairly normal.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

State Mutual is not rated by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) at the time of this review due to the lack of information. There are no complaints and no reviews at all on the file.

In fact, we found no reviews or comments about this company in any of the usual and more unusual locations we usually reference. This company’s reputation is as mysterious as their product lineup.

The Bottom Line

Due to a lack of information we are unable to draw any sort of conclusion regarding this company. If you’re seeking Medicare Supplement insurance and wish to shop online, there are plenty of choices out there that will provide detailed plan information, rates, and even the opportunity to buy directly online; State Mutual is not one of them.
