About United National
United National Life Insurance Company of America has been in business since 1961, with headquarters in Glenview, Illinois. They operate as a privately owned insurance company, selling their products in 25 states through independent insurance agents.
United National writes health supplement policies that are focused on specific types of out of pocket costs. They also offer basic life insurance options. While various sources list them as a Medicare Supplement provider, they do not list these products on the website.
The company’s website doesn’t offer a lot of detail in regards to their history or operations, and limited information on their products.
United National Products
United National has a focused set of supplemental health insurance products as well as two life insurance choices.
Known as their Shield Series, United National lists four supplemental health plan options on their website.
Cancer Shield is a plan that offers several benefits, including lump sum payment (if selected as a rider) as well as benefits for cancer treatments as needed. This plan also has the option to add several other riders, including a heart attack and stroke rider and a dental and vision add-on.
Dental & Vision Shield is United National’s dental and vision plan. It pays 80% of covered services after the $100 deductible is met, up to an annual maximum. This plan can be added on to either the Cancer Shield as noted above or the Home Health Care Shield.
Home Health Care Shield is a supplemental plan that pays the out of pocket costs of short-term care at home. The plan can be customized to several benefit levels and can also include a number of different riders. These include ambulance coverage, critical illness benefits, and hospitalization.
The last of the Shield products is Hospital Indemnity. This plan offers options of between $100 and $600 a day, with benefit periods of 3 to 10 days for out of pocket hospital costs. An ambulance rider and skilled nursing rider can be added to this plan.
United National writes only whole life insurance. There are two options to choose from.
Family Whole Life offers coverage amounts of up to $125,000. The plan includes an accelerated death benefit, and rider options include a term to age 60 rider, children’s insurance rider, and waiver of premium.
Provider Whole Life has lower benefit amounts, offering a range between $10,000 and $25,000. It offers similar rider options, and little information is given regarding the difference between these two policies other than the maximum benefit amount. This policy, however, based on benefit amounts appears to be a final expense plan.
The United National website does not provide information regarding their rates, nor is there an option to receive a quote. Quotes can be obtained by calling directly or by contacting a local agent.
This is fairly standard for a company offering this type of insurance, although we do like to at least see sample rates for life insurance. As a result of the lack of rates, we are unable to compare this company in terms of value.
Claims can be filed by calling the customer service toll-free line, or by logging into the customer portal to download claims forms. These forms do not appear to be available for download outside of the customer portal area.
Claims being filed by beneficiaries who do not have access to the portal will be handled through customer service; according to the site’s FAQ section, all necessary forms with a list of required documentation will be mailed out to the beneficiary.
Claims cannot be filed online, which is common for this type of insurance company.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
United National Life has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). There are two complaints on file in the past three years, and both of them were closed in the past 12 months. Currently, the company is not BBB accredited.
Of the four reviews on Google, two are positive and two are negative. The first positive review is from an agent working with the company, and the second from an actual customer. Of the two negative reviews, only one has comments added. The negative comment states that the company refuses to pay claims. Overall, there is a 3.0-star rating.
We were unable to locate further consumer reviews elsewhere.
The Bottom Line
United National provides limited information on their website, an indication that they rely on agents to sell their products and do not necessarily cater to the online shopping audience. Unfortunately, that makes it very difficult to gather enough information to provide a recommendation for this company.
