People’s Trust is a homeowner’s insurance company operating locally in the sometimes-difficult Florida home insurance market. They came into the market at the same time as several other newcomers responding to larger insurers pulling out of the state.

About People’s Trust Insurance

People’s Trust Insurance was founded in 2008, and time when the homeowner’s insurance market in Florida was rocky after several difficult hurricane seasons. The company focuses entirely on homeowner’s insurance, offering two levels of coverage to include more homes.

The company is located in Deerfield Beach, Florida and provides coverage to approximately 125,000 homes across the state. They ranked as the second fastest growing company in Florida between 2012 and 2014, and employ about 300 people. Coverage is offered through local independent agents.

People’s Trust Products

People’s Trust writes only home insurance and offers two different products.

Homeowners Insurance (HO3) is a standard comprehensive policy, providing structure coverage as well as personal property and liability. The home itself is insured at replacement cost. Personal property is actual cash value unless the insured opts to increase coverage to the replacement cost level for an added premium.

This policy is for owner-occupied homes and has stricter requirements for coverage than the other option, Basic Choice.

Basic Choice is what is known as a dwelling fire policy elsewhere. Homes that do not qualify for a homeowner’s policy will often qualify for this policy.

This product has more exclusions, but still covers the structure as well as providing personal property and liability. Basic Choice can be written for rental properties as well and offers protection for landlords.

Flood Insurance is also offered by People’s Trust but is underwritten by another company on the authorization of FEMA.

Rates

People’s Trust does offer online quoting but requires personal information as well as the creation of an account with the company. The system rejected our attempts to obtain rate information with a sample address and phone number.

People’s Trust does not appear in the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation’s rate charts, so we were unable to get a rate comparison from that resource, either.

Claims

People’s Trust has a 24/7 toll-free claims reporting line offering an immediate emergency response.

The claims process operates on what the company calls its Rapid Recovery system, promising a fast resolution to claims large and small. After the claim is filed, the Rapid Response team is dispatched if necessary to prevent further damage and assess the situation. In non-emergencies, the company will send out an adjuster as quickly as possible.

From there, the system is much the same as most insurance companies – coverage is determined and benefits applied to the loss. The company promises a three-year satisfaction guarantee on all workmanship done by contractors in their network.

For a regional insurance company that sells only homeowner’s insurance, we found the claims section of the website to be clear and informative.

Ratings and Consumer Review

People’s Trust has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB) with 68 complaints on file in the past three years, 20 of which were filed in the past 12 months. They have been accredited since 2014. There are 43 reviews of the company on the BBB page, and the complaints are mostly focused on billing issues and policies being canceled without notice.

There are 42 reviews on Yelp, with a similar overall 1.5-star rating. Here we found several claims issues citing slow response. The company does take the time to respond to complaints on the Yelp page, which is in their favor.

The Office of Insurance Regulation does have data for People’s Trust in their complaints database. The most recent data is for the second quarter of 2018, and lists a complaint ratio of 1:1012, or one complaint for every 1,012 policies in force. The site also offers two similarly sized companies for comparison; People’s Trust has a complaint ratio that is lower than both.

The Bottom Line

There is not a lot of information on People’s Trust’s products, nor were we able to obtain rates. What we see in the complaints shows a company operating with fewer complaints than similarly sized competitors, which is a good thing. People’s Trust may be worth a look if you are having trouble finding home insurance in Florida, but there is a chance that those who qualify for a better-known company will get a better deal elsewhere.

  1. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE PLEASE!!

I want to make sure everyone can be safe and rely on their homeowner’s insurance when they need them the most.

Unfortunately, they have never helped me because I got my lawyer to help me since they were lacking on my claim.

I am a sick person with asthma and they did not help me with my roof problem so I needed to do something fast.

They do not care about anyone’s situation. They only care about the thousands of dollars I paid them for over 10 hears.

Thank you for nothing Peoples Trust. I hope you are doing awesome with my money.

  2. People’s Trust is the last home insurance company I would recommend. We had hurricane damage resulting in water leakage into the house but People’s Trust refused reimbursement because we took action to get repairs made to stop the damage before P’s T got to the house to inspect it. According to them, we could not take steps to minimize damage and still be eligible for coverage. GO ELSEWHERE for your insurance.

  3. My parents went with this company and they sent an inspector out. All that the inspector found was an electric outlet cover that needed to be replaced due to getting hot from the heater. It was DONE and proof mailed. Just got a letter saying that policy is canceled due to failure to correct items, but we did and sent them proof….Funny thing, we are approaching hurricane season in Florida. MY ADVICE, DO RESEARCH BEFORE GOING WITH ANYONE FOR ANYTHING AND STAY FAR AWAY FROM PEOPLE’S TRUST, they are NO GOOD!

  4. Had them for the first two years of our new home. The first-year premium was $3,694, the second year was $4,606 and we just got our renewal for year three…$5,891. They seem to be a company that sucks you in with a low rate, then rapidly increase your premiums with the hope that you won’t notice or care. Not a way to do business in my opinion. We will not be renewing with Peoples to state the obvious. BTW…we never filed for a single claim in that two year period. By reading the other comments, I’m glad we didn’t need them.

    • They did the same thing to me. I had a $1,956 premium in 2017 and just received my new dec page for 2018.. Went up to $3200. A 57% increase. And I’m told they can’t help me lower it in any way… Searching for a new company.

  5. I had People’s Trust several Years ago. I never filed a claim or had any interaction with them other than the home inspection. I was with them going on two years when they refused to renew my policy. When I called them, they stated that they were eliminating some of their exposure. I told them they are full of s***. I told them that I live 1/8 of a mile feet east of the Florida Turnpike and I know people that they still cover that live east of US 1. They were rude on the phone and act as if they couldn’t be bothered answering my stupid questions.
    Stay away from them.

  6. I have peoples trust now but they are dropping me as of December 18th because they want me to have my trellis on the side of the house fixed up by a licensed contractor i had it fixed up by a neighbor painted and pressure cleaned but that is not good enough for them. I also have copper tubing under the sinks in the house and above the hot water heater in the garage they want it removed or replaced why should do that they are no leaks and nothing wrong with the tubing this is a very shady outfit

  7. Had them for two years. Had one claim – the only one I’ve had in 30 years of owning a home. My neighbor’s tree fell on my deck and carport roof – got reimbursed $7,000.00. Two months later, a small tree limb fell from same neighbor, and punctured the new roof on my carport. I called Peoples to report the issue but called them back later the same day because neighbor was going to pay for the damage himself. Now I have been dropped by Peoples due to “excessive claims”. Trying to get reinsured, I am finding that even though I cancelled the second call to Peoples, it still is being counted as a “claim” even though zero dollars were paid out on it. Now other companies are rejecting me due to “excessive claims”. Got one company willing to insure me – policy went from $1000 to $2500 for lesser coverage. No joke – can’t get anything else. I am so disgusted.

  8. Was dropped by Peoples Trust after being one of their original customers and never having a claim.
Reason for dropping roof too old. I paid their company, Rapids Rewards, to do a required roof inspection
and rest of the house in 2010. At that time they said the roof was good until 2020. Also reason for dropping
hot water heater too old. They did not come out to inspect my roof or water heater, which I have not had any
issues with. I have the original roof inspection that they did in 2010 and emailed it to them. Customer service
did not seem interested and said it probably wouldn’t change anything. Well guess what PPT my roof survived
Hurricane Irma without a scratch. Any suggestions for new insurance providers ?Thank you

    • Same thing happened to me paid 10 years no claims insurance off course increased every year and without looking at my roof top side or inside as mine is a custom built home survived two hurricanes and couple tropical storms without on tile missing or damaged no leaks. My roof was also made of superior quality products. I have taken within 10 mile radius of my home construction of homes 400 to 600k without the quality of my roof. I will seek legal because the inspector never looked at my roof and date of cancellation was same day IRMA was formed and I receive zero damage to my roof.
I lost my river home to damage only to find out Peoples Trust cancelled me after being loyal customer without claims for 10 years
Inspection seemed to be pre-empted to cancel my policy and maybe put me in higher risk knowing that my VA Mortgage requires insurance coverage. All I need is fire and theft and if my home was paid for I would not even need this type of 10 % of your damage first at MARKET Value up front before they even drive a nail in my case 30k which I would broker my self with my construction contractors.
NOT HAPPY Stay Tuned Peoples Trust cancel a excellent customer and cause unbelievable stress without even meeting with me first and going over details already stressed out over loss of another home.

  9. Just got my renewal notice, price went up from $1900/y to $5335/y. Yes you read it right. Called thinking this was a mistake, no it’s not they said. “Lost $300million so we have to raise premiums”
    What a lot of B.S.

    • I would just shop elsewhere. I dropped People’s Trust and got a new policy with American Integrity. I was surprised to find out the new policy was actually CHEAPER than PPT. It was also better coverage with a much more reliable company. I am grateful to PPT to have made unreasonable demands forcing me to shop for a better and cheaper policy. PPT refunded the remaining premium for their canceled policy, which paid for the new one! There was a bright side to this story after all.

    • Literally one of the worse ethical companies I have ever dealt with. I have had a claim in for about a month due to a ceiling leak. I had to call, cajole and nag to get little results. Now we have a hurricane called Irma and there is still a hole in my ceiling. I am a full time working RN and received a call today from an alleged customer service rep, i think her name was [Redacted], she ended up yelling at me so i could not respond, so i hung up on her. She called me right back and said my case would be taken to the top dog and she would call me back in 10 min. Never called me. Return phone number is the basic # with all menu options. When i said I have contacted an attorney she said she couldn’t talk to me. However i explained i only left a voicemail with an attorney . End result – She lied to me, never got back to me and Im facing a hurricane with a hole in my ceiling. This is the worst customer service company ever. Stay safe everyone.

    • I TOTALLY AGREE I JUST GOT MY RENEWAL , SIGNED UP WITH THEM LAST SEPTEMBER BECAUSE THE rate they gave me was about 1100 less than my current insurance company, only to find out that this year it has gone up 1800 even with my wind storm mitigation!! I will be looking for another company and will report them to the BBB.

  13. STAY AWAY! Used them to cover our 3 houses because they were cheap only to learn there is a reason why they are so cheap. First they will send an “inspector” to take detailed photos of your house, and that included my kids!!! Very invasive and troublesome inspection (they want it on their schedule not yours). If you ever have a claim, they will send their people to fight it. If they cannot fight it, they will insist that they fix it themselves and they will do it the cheapest way possible. I am now shopping for a real insurance company and will be happy to pay more as it’s just a big waste of money to go with these guys. Do NOT trust “Peoples Trust”! You will regret it.

    • Don’t fall for it. I did and I regret it bigly. Had them for 3 years and just got a letter today from their “risk analysis” department that I need to install a new shingles roof soon to keep my insurance! This was without any recent inspection “on their part (they did a thorough inspection when I signed up a few years back). I never filed any claims with them and paid my premiums in full and in advance. Other people I know have similar stories encountering bad service and unreasonable demands.

  17. I have Home Owners Insurance with PTI since 2014. Premiums paid in full by annual lump sum, never filed a claim. The policy renewal came to be and I missed the date. I called the
company a couple of days later to explain this and pay for the premium. All I learned was that
my policy has been cancelled and will not be renewed. Despite further efforts they did not change their position. You missed the date, you’re out.

I submit I am treated unfairly and without concern for my situation. Age does not matter, I am
85 years old and expected some consideration for their decision.

  18. I have been dealing with a claim from Hurricane Mathew since 10/07/2016 and it is now 2/1/2017. They tarped the roof and it leaked again causing more damage. They dragged their feet on adding the additional damage to the claim. They will also insist on you using their contractor which I do not recommend based on reviews and personal knowledge from others. The policy was in my deceased fathers name. I sent them all the documentation they required and they still issued and sent the first check to the wrong address and made out to the estate of my dad instead of his trust. I still have not received any payment and am consulting with an attorney on what to do next. Steer clear of this company and their proprietary contractor Rapid Response!!

  19. Purchased insurance with this company almost 6 years ago. They surprisingly did not require a home inspection. My home was built in 1979. I have had two claims in the past 6 years. The first claim was for a roof damaged by high winds. This claim was handled professionally and without incident. My second claim was a trip down disaster lane. The rapid response team was great but after that it went downhill fast. I opted to let Peoples trust provide the contractor to do the work which turned out to be a big mistake. First off I could tell that this contractor was up to no good when he wasn’t even able to provide samples of carpet or tile for us to choose from. We actually had to go to several different stores to pick out tile and carpet. When dealing with the carpet supplier I learned that the insurance company approved two bedrooms for new carpet instead of one. I received a letter from an individual advising me that he was the project manager for the insurance company and that I should call him with any questions or concerns. I made numerous calls that went unanswered. Currently there has been no final walkthrough. There are areas that need caulked such as around the tub fixtures. The paint job was amateur at best as there are missed areas and drips and runs. The fixtures were suppose to be replaced bu the contractor failed to replace them. STAY VERY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY. They have threatened to cancel my insurance if I refused a home inspection by them.

  20. What reinsurance company they have in the event of a category 4 hurricane? There is no information on their website other than by an AM Best rated Company from Bermudas. Who owns that Company? Are they self-insuring? I called as I wanted to get a quote and could not get a straight answer. I was directed to the Website. Very weird. Who do I call?

  21. I just received a letter in the mail from PTI. According to them I have excessive and improperly stored contents in my garage. I will have to provide at least 42 inches of an access path. I have to provide proof that contents have been organized and stored properly. I have until Oct 15, 2016 to provide pictures that this has been done. Seven years ago, when I took out the policy the inspector took pictures of my whole house, including the garage. My garage today is still the same. Now I will make a concientious effort to comply. But I don’t know what the term excessive and improperly stored contents means exactly. I am an engineer and have a large number of tools and hardware in my garage. Since I have had insurance with PTI, for a number of years, I have never made a claim. Do I have to remove my tools from my garage. I don’t know. I never thought that this would ever be a problem. I do have a lot of items in my garage, but I thought my garage could be used for storage.
