American National Personal Lines Property & Casualty Insurance

The property & casualty products from American National cover the basics of personal insurance, including:

The website does state that the company offers a cash back incentive for loyal customers. If the client has their home and auto insured through American National and is claim free for a period of three years, they are issued 25 percent of their eligible home and auto premiums back in cash (not available in all states). Customers who have commented on their insurance programs seem to be pleased with it. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) provides customer ratings. Use this site to find insurance information for your state.

American National also runs the subsidiary ANPAC. What does ANPAC stand for? It stands for American National Property and Casualty Company. ANPAC is run out of Missouri and offers life insurance options and more.

Are American National’s Rates Competitive?

Online quoting is not available for most of the products from American National. Only its term life insurance and whole life insurance options can be bought online, through the American National Direct website. Online quoting requires providing contact information that allows the company to contact you by phone in order to follow up on the quote and complete the application which may put off some insurance shoppers who simply want to get numbers without being contacted.

American National is very focused on its life insurance products and likely has competitive rates. For other products, it’s difficult to say what sort of rates this company might offer. As an agent-driven company, it’s unlikely that its auto rates will be as competitive as major direct-buy insurance companies. For comparison, check out the chart below, which features different rates from several top companies.

How Do I File an American National Claim?

How do you file American National insurance claims? American National provides very little information on its website with regard to claims. The website does have claims forms available to download for some of the company’s products, including life and health insurance.

However, with regard to property & casualty claims, the client is directed to contact a toll-free number. This is likely a function of American National’s focus on life insurance and other similar products, but the lack of information is still a major oversight.

There is information available to contact customer support and a customer access point where policyholders can log into the company’s system to manage accounts. The website does not say whether there is any claims access through this portal.

It seems likely that American National directs claims through the customer support line or accepts them through the agents that sell its products, but without any real information on the website, it’s difficult to say with any certainty.

What Are the Consumer Complaints About American National Insurance?

American National Insurance is not BBB accredited, nor is it rated by the BBB. There are, however, 21 complaints listed in the last three years, six of which have been closed in the past 12 months. Those are low numbers for such a large company.

Reviews of American National are mixed, but there are a good number of positive reviews, which is always encouraging. There are more positive reviews for the company’s life insurance subsidiary than for the property & casualty company, but overall there are still enough good reviews to easily balance out the negative ones. Most complaints center on claims issues.

What Are the Financial Strength Ratings for American National Insurance?

A.M. Best awards American National insurance an A for financial strength. S&P gives them the same rating.

Six years later, they were highlighted as one of the “100 Most Trustworthy Agencies” by Forbes Magazine, then again in 2019 as one of the “Best Mid-sized Employers” by Forbes.

What’s the Bottom Line?

The lack of information regarding the details of the company’s products makes it difficult to get a clear picture of what it offers and whether it’s a good value for consumers. American National has a fairly good reputation, with more positive reviews than are commonly seen for a property & casualty company.

It may be worth a look for those who prefer to use an agent. American National is a big player in the life insurance market. That said, it’s difficult to provide a real recommendation for this company due to the overall lack of information on products and claims processes. It’s also worth noting that American National Insurance Company has battled class-action lawsuits in the past.
