First Insurance Company of Hawaii Summary
FICOH was founded in 1911, and stands today as the largest and oldest insurance company headquartered in Hawaii. The company started out under the name Home Insurance, and changed the name to First Insurance Company of Hawaii in 1961 as the company reached its 50th anniversary.
In 2002, FICOH added First Risk Management Services to serve the non-standard market, and moved into claims management in 2013.
FICOH is a member of the Tokio Marine North America Group of Companies, the U.S. branch of an international group based in Japan.
FICOH’s products are sold through 27 independent agents throughout the islands as well as directly through Internet and phone sales.
FICOH writes both basic personal insurance as well as commercial products, with both standard and non-standard options and package policies. When it comes to personal insurance, they aren’t quite a one-stop shop, as they do not offer life insurance or coverage for specialty vehicles such as ATVs or boats.
FICOH offers full coverage auto insurance with a range of coverage options and discounts. Auto insurance is available online, over the phone, and through agents.
Benefits of FICOH auto insurance policies include accident forgiveness, loyalty discounts, multi-car discounts, and a loss-free credit that can add up to 40% in total after several years without a claim.
FICOH writes both standard homeowner’s and dwelling fire policies to cover the needs of various types of homes.
Standard homeowner’s includes structure and personal property coverage, as well as personal liability coverage. FICOH also includes identity theft assistance at no extra charge with their homeowner’s policies.
Dwelling fire coverage is designed for homes that are rental units not occupied by the owner. This coverage is more focused on the needs of landlords, with limited personal property coverage.
FICOH writes personal umbrella coverage to provide added liability protection above and beyond the underlying home and auto policies.
First Select Portfolio
This package policy is a unique product from FICOH. It includes home, auto, and even personal umbrella if selected, all in one package.
The package policy comes with a rate reduction of 30% and a single bill and deductible to simplify the package over the average “bundle” – which at most insurance companies generally execute two separate policies each earning a multi-policy discount.
FICOH writes a variety of commercial insurance for businesses, from package policies to individual policies for specific needs. Available options include:
- Businessowner’s package policy
- Commercial Auto
- Commercial Package policies
- Captive Management
- Inland Marine
- Business Umbrella
- Worker’s Compensation
FICOH also writes surety bonds and industry-specific policies for businesses including contractors, real estate, and more.
FICOH’s non-standard arm writes specialty policies for individuals and businesses. This includes their Lawyer’s Professional Liability Program as well as flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program.
FICOH’s website promises an average of 30% savings to those who switch, but as they are a Hawaii-only company we are unable to provide a rate comparison based on our standard sample.
Online quoting is available for auto, and there are a number of available discounts that are likely to help drivers obtain a better rate. Since policies can be purchased directly or through an agent, drivers do have the option to avoid possible commission costs.
FICOH accepts claims through the following avenues:
- (808) 527-7711 – Oahu toll-free number
- (800) 272-5202 – Neighbor Islands toll-free number
- (808) 545-3120 – Fax Line
- Email: email@example.com
The company has a Direct Repair network that simplifies and streamlines the repair process. Shops in the network guarantee their work for as long as the driver owns the car, and work directly with the insurance company in order to expedite claims and repairs. Drivers can also choose any repair shop they prefer for repairs.
The company claims to have a 97% claims satisfaction rating based on their own surveys of customers, and promises prompt claims service, although they do not provide timelines or the process for claims on the website.
First Insurance Company of Hawaii has been BBB accredited since 1968. They have an A+ rating and there are only three complaints on record for the last three years, all of which have been closed in the past 12 months.
Records kept by the Hawaii Department of Insurance (found as part of their premium comparison) show that the company had only eight complaints on record for 2015, the latest available data.
Throughout the internet, reviews of the company are generally mixed, and there are not a lot of them out there. There are both positive and negative reviews, with most of the negative comments regarding claims service.
Overall, the number of complaints is fairly low, and there are even several positive reviews, which can be rare for insurance companies. The existing reviews do not raise any major red flags. Many reviews mention that the company does offer lower rates, which agrees with their general promise of savings, although, some complain that rates have gone up unexpectedly.
|Rating Company||Grade||Financial Outlook|
FICOH has a long history and a fairly strong reputation. They are likely to appeal to those who prefer a smaller, local company offering personal attention, but also to those seeking low-cost insurance.
FICOH has a good product lineup, although they do not offer much in the way of specialty insurance and are missing life insurance to complete the three main types of personal coverage. They are worth a quote comparison for those who have relatively simple insurance needs, and their package options will appeal to those looking to consolidate policies.
