iTunes: Requires iOS 7.0 or later, but is optimized for iPhone 5. Also compatible with iPad and iPod touch.
Android: Requires 2.2 or higher.
Esurance offers an interestingly long laundry list of app features:
- File a claim.
- Upload and submit photos for an appraisal.
- Store accident information, including photos, for later.
- Contact a dedicated claims representative directly.
- Find out when your car repair will be done.
- View and save ID Card, or use it as digital proof of insurance depending on your state’s laws.
- Make a payment.
- Update a payment method.
- Change the policy payment date.
- Check coverage.
- Update contact information.
- Get a quote.
- Find local shops, services, parking, and fuel.
- Contact roadside assistance.
The app doesn’t allow you to change coverage directly. Few current insurance apps have this feature, however, and it is not unreasonable to expect it to be available in the near future. In fact, Esurance advertises the feature on its website, but user reviews cite this as a feature that has not been fully enabled.
With that limitation, of course, it means you cannot add vehicles to your policy without going to the website.
The app’s features will vary with your device, and some features may not be available on devices with the older operating system, especially Android.
Google Play / iTunes / Amazon Reviews
iTunes — 2.5 stars on the current version, 3.5 stars from 933 ratings overall.
Google Play — 4.2 stars on 2,853 reviews. Login and crashes are the most cited reason for negative reviews, but the app was updated in October 2014.
Pros and Cons
- File a claim
- Make payment
- Get a quote
- Roadside assistance
- No coverage change
- Features vary depending on device
Like many mobile insurance apps, the Esurance app is like the proverbial little girl with a curl: When it is working right, it’s very good; when it isn’t, it’s very bad.
Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to access your policy information in the event of a car accident, and that situation appears to have occurred with some frequency according to reviews left on both the iTunes and Google Play pages. The newest Android update, however, seems to be functioning with less hiccups and iPhone 5 users seem satisfied as well.
When it is working right, the app is very quick and presents well designed intuitive screens that simplify use. Information loading is very fast on higher operating systems, and overall, the only bug complaint left to solve is an apparent problem with logging in for some customers.
If you have Esurance, this app is worth having on your device. It can simplify and speed up the process of making claims and managing payments. The service finding portion still needs some attention, but again, when it functions, it works well.
