A fraternal benefit society originally serving traveling salesmen, United Commercial Travelers (UCT) offers a range of supplemental health insurance plans. They serve members in both the U.S. and Canada and have a 130-year history.

About UCT

UCT was founded in 1888 in Columbus, Ohio with the purpose of providing financial assistance to traveling salesmen. The society expanded membership to Canadians in 1899.

As the traveling salesman became a thing of the past, UCT opened its doors to all men and women over the age of 18, with the only requirement for membership beyond age being listed as an interest in giving back to the community. UCT accomplishes this giving back by operating as a nonprofit; profits are invested back in the community through charities that are chosen by the society’s members.

Membership comes with a list of benefits including travel discounts, widow and orphan benefits, and scholarships. There is a $30 annual membership fee to join UCT, of which $12 is directed into the group’s charitable activities. UCT has 200 local councils across North America.

UCT’s products are all supplemental health plans, one of which is Medicare Supplement. Availability varies from state to state, with coverage offered in all states where a local council exists.

UCT Medicare Supplement

UCT offers a good list of Medicare Supplement products, with seven of the eleven possible plans listed as available. Plan availability differs depending on the state, but in general, the plan options are A, B, C, D, F, G, and N.

These choices include the most common and popular plans along with several other choices. Plan A is the base plan, and all companies writing Medicare Supplement are required by law to offer it. This plan covers Part A and B coinsurance amounts and also covers the first three pints of blood each year.

All of the remaining plans offer this coverage, although some do not cover the coinsurance at 100% or may have copays or deductibles.

Plan F is the highest level of coverage available, and it pays all out of pocket costs that are not covered by Medicare along with emergency medical travel coverage. This plan is offered by other companies with a deductible to make it more affordable, but UCT does not have that option.

UCT offers a range of in-between plans, including Plan N, which has copays for some services and is generally a more affordable choice as a result.

The plans offered here provide a very good selection of options, and there should be a choice for just about every budget.

Rates

UCT does not offer online rate quotes for their products. Quotes can only be obtained by contacting an agent.

Products, including Medicare Supplement, are only available to members. That means that the $30 annual membership fee should be taken into consideration when comparing rates, as potential new members will need to pay this along with the premium for the Medicare Supplement plan of choice.

Claims

There is a page dedicated to claim forms that are available for download, none of which are directly related to Medicare. One Universal Claim Form is available, but it is not made clear if this can be used for Medicare.

No further claim information is found on the website.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

UCT has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file in the past three years. There is one negative review on the page stating that UCT sent out a bill incorrectly; this seems likely to have been a simple error.

The company’s Facebook page has a total of 20 reviews resulting in a 4.5-star rating. There are no comments included in any of the ratings, so there is no detail about the customer experience.

We did not find much else about this company, which is pretty common for a small, membership-based non-profit insurer.

The Bottom Line

UCT has a good selection of Medicare Supplement plans, but without rates, we cannot speak to the value offered. They will appeal to those that prefer a smaller company and are less concerned with rates than with the benefits of membership and the concept of giving back to the community.
