Temporary health insurance, or short-term health insurance, is a health insurance policy that is typically one year or less of coverage. This type of insurance is often used when a family or individual is in between policies and needs to carry over health insurance until another policy starts.
Short term health insurance is a bit different from standard health insurance not just in duration, but also in terms of what is covered and the benefits each provides consumers.

What is temporary health insurance?
Like the name suggests, temporary health insurance is a health insurance policy that provides temporary coverage that usually lasts several months and up to a year. With more than 31.2 million people in the U.S. uninsured currently, it’s important to keep yourself safe in case of any emergency.
Since temporary health insurance isn’t regulated by the Affordable Care Act (ACA), plans aren’t obligated to provide minimum essential health benefits generally mandated by the ACA.
These benefits typically include inpatient and outpatient hospital care, mental health services, and prescription drug coverage. Temporary plans also don’t typically have to cover pre-existing conditions.
Generally, these plans are designed for healthy people and generally have caps on how much they will pay for certain services. Temporary health insurance plans can have initial terms of up to 364 days and can be renewed for up to three years, though some states have stricter rules about duration times.

- Pick your deductible: choose between coinsurance or copays for your doctors visits
- Flexibility: enroll for as little as 30 days or up to 3 years depending on your state
- Fast coverage: qualify in as little as 5 minutes or less and have coverage the very next day
- Preventative care: includes childhood immunization and preventative cancer screenings
- $500 deductible on prescriptions: on Deluxe plans, and waived for Standard plans
- Generic prescription drugs: inpatient drugs are covered once the $500 deductible is met, and are subject to 20% coinsurance; for outpatient drugs, after drug deductible is met, a covered person pays a $10 copay for a 34-day supply
- Preferred-brand prescription drugs: inpatient drugs are covered once the $500 deductible is met, and are subject to 20% coinsurance; for outpatient drugs, after the drug deductible is met, a covered person pays a $50 copay for a 34-day supply of medication
- Non-preferred brand name prescription drugs: inpatient drugs are covered once the $500 deductible is met, and are subject to 20% coinsurance; for outpatient drugs, after the drug deductible is met, a covered person pays $75 copay for a 34-day supply
Plans for Pivot Health range from $68 per month to $77 per month. There is a five-day waiting period for coverage to start as well as the potential to wait for up to 30 days for pre-existing conditions.
Although this plan allows you to see any doctor in or out of network, it should be noted that you must meet the up to $10,000 deductible before coverage starts to kick in. After this has been met, the coinsurance will cost you 20%.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is temporary health insurance?
Temporary health insurance, also known as short-term health insurance, provides coverage for a limited duration. It is designed to bridge gaps in coverage for individuals who are transitioning between insurance plans, experiencing a waiting period for employer-sponsored coverage, or going through other temporary situations where comprehensive health insurance is not available.
What does temporary health insurance cover?
Temporary health insurance typically offers coverage for unexpected illnesses, injuries, and emergencies. It may include benefits such as doctor visits, hospitalization, diagnostic tests, and limited prescription drug coverage. However, it does not provide the same level of coverage as comprehensive health insurance and may not cover pre-existing conditions, preventive care, or certain essential health benefits.
How long can I have temporary health insurance?
The duration of temporary health insurance varies depending on state regulations and the specific policy. In many states, coverage can last from a few months up to 12 months, although some policies may offer extensions or renewal options. It’s important to review the terms and limitations of the policy to understand the exact duration of coverage.
How can I save money on temporary health insurance?
To save money on temporary health insurance, consider the following tips:
- Compare multiple plans: Obtain quotes from different insurance providers and compare the coverage and costs of their temporary health insurance plans.
- Opt for a higher deductible: Choosing a higher deductible can lower your premium. Just make sure you can afford the deductible amount in case you need to use the insurance.
- Evaluate your coverage needs: Assess your healthcare needs and choose a plan that aligns with those needs. Avoid paying for unnecessary coverage options.
- Shop around for the best rates: Different insurance companies may offer varying rates for temporary health insurance. Take the time to research and compare prices to find the most affordable option.
- Consider alternative coverage options: Explore alternatives such as Medicaid, marketplace plans, or other affordable health insurance options that may provide more comprehensive coverage at a similar or lower cost.
Is temporary health insurance suitable for everyone?
Temporary health insurance may not be suitable for everyone. It is primarily designed for individuals who need temporary coverage during a transitional period. If you have pre-existing conditions, ongoing medical needs, or anticipate the need for extensive medical services, a more comprehensive health insurance plan may be more appropriate.
Can I renew temporary health insurance?
Some temporary health insurance plans offer renewal options, allowing you to extend your coverage beyond the initial term. However, renewal options and eligibility vary by insurance company and state regulations. It’s important to review the terms of your policy or consult with the insurance provider to understand if renewal is possible.
Does temporary health insurance fulfill the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements?
Temporary health insurance is not considered minimum essential coverage under the ACA. Therefore, it does not fulfill the individual mandate requirement for having health insurance. As a result, individuals with only temporary health insurance may still be subject to penalties for not having ACA-compliant coverage.
Where can I get temporary health insurance?
Temporary health insurance can be obtained through various sources, including insurance brokers, online insurance marketplaces, and directly from insurance companies. It’s important to research and compare options to find a reputable insurer offering temporary health insurance in your area.
