About MercyCare

One of the health insurance providers that started to pop up in the mid-90s, MercyCare Health Plans was formed in 1994 as a subsidiary of MercyHealth. Mercyhealth is a healthcare network comprised of hospitals and clinics across the southern part of Wisconsin and into Northern Illinois. Their service area covers four counties in Wisconsin: Jefferson, Green, Rock, and Walworth, and one county in Illinois, McHenry. The company’s headquarters is in Janesville, WI.

All of MercyCare’s plans are HMO, which means that the providers are generally limited to those that are a part of the Mercyhealth network. They offer a good selection of individual and family health insurance plans and also have group plans for companies.

MercyCare also offers Medicare Supplement insurance coverage to seniors, but only in Rock, Walworth, and Green counties in Wisconsin. This is a particularly small coverage area compared to other health insurance providers.

This information focuses on MercyCare in Wisconsin, and not Mercy Care Medicare in Arizona, which is a different company. Mercy Care Medicare Advantage is part of the Arizona company, and not covered in this review.

MercyCare Medicare Supplement

As mentioned, MercyCare’s Medicare Supplement plans are only offered in a limited coverage area. The plan offered does not follow the standard letter system used in other states, as Wisconsin law handles Medicare Supplement plans differently. Insurance companies name their own plans, although the type of coverage offered is still expected to meet certain standards.

There appear to be two plan options offered by MercyCare, known as Medicare Select and Senior supplement. Like all of MercyCare’s plans, both are HMO plans. Both are comprehensive policies that are designed to pay for all out-of-pocket costs that are not covered by Medicare. This includes both coinsurance and deductibles for medical and hospital, as well as blood and foreign travel emergency care.

The plans generally match up in coverage to the highest level in the lettered plan system used in most other states, Plan F. Also included is coverage for hearing exams, dental surgery, and a range of other services.

Plan availability varies by county.

As previously noted, this is an HMO plan, which means that benefits are limited to a specific network of providers. HMOs also usually require referrals for specialist care.

MercyCare Medicare Rates

MercyCare doesn’t provide online quoting, and due to the small, specific region that they cover a rate comparison would be difficult. MercyCare Medicare Quotes can be obtained by contacting MercyCare directly to request further information.

While it has become something of an expected standard to offer online quoting, it’s not surprising that such a small company does not offer it. Still, as there is only one plan offered, it would be relatively easy for the company to offer some rate information.

MercyCare Medicare Claims

MercyCare does not offer claims information for their Medicare Supplement plans, which is common to health insurance companies. Claims are handled directly with providers, and since MercyCare is an HMO with a limited network they should be fairly direct and straightforward.

There is a customer service line available to answer questions, and in the event that a member has a claim issue it can likely be handled there. There is also a member login area where claims can be reviewed and followed up on.

MercyCare Medicare Ratings and Reviews

MercyCare Health Plans has a Better Business Bureau (BBB) rating of A+, and there are no complaints on file in the past three years.

We were unable to locate much in our research on MercyCare’s reputation. The single Google review is four stars but does not include any comments. This is likely mostly due to the small size of the company. Generally, no news is good news when it comes to insurance company reviews; it is usually when people are upset that they take to the Internet to post complaints.

MercyCare Medicare: The Bottom Line

MercyCare covers a small area and offers only one plan, which may appeal to those who like a local company and prefer to keep things simple when selecting coverage. Certainly, the one plan they offer has very good coverage. We cannot, however, offer further information as to how their rates compare to other companies, and with limited information on the company, it is difficult to make a solid recommendation. Those for whom plan selection and rates are top considerations will likely want to consider other options.
