As a veteran, your service has earned you the gratitude of your nation as well as many American businesses. Among the companies offering special benefits and discounts to veterans are a number of insurance companies, and that includes home insurance.
Finding great home insurance and taking advantage of your status as a veteran means doing a little shopping around, but it can be well worth it for the savings.
The Basics of Home Insurance for Veterans
When it comes to choosing home insurance, veterans need all of the same basics as any other homeowner; structure coverage, personal property, and liability are the basics to any policy. Beyond that, it is up to you what additional, optional coverage you might want to add, like water and sewer backup, high-value item riders, and more.
The one basic difference for a veteran buying home insurance is the access to companies that only write coverage for either active duty or former military members and their families. This exclusive coverage usually follows the same basics in terms of coverage, but it also comes with special rates and additional benefits as well.
If you have a VA loan, you will need to double check on the requirements for your homeowner’s insurance. VA requirements are not usually any different from those on any other mortgage; requirements usually include a base amount of replacement cost coverage and may also include a maximum deductible. This deductible amount may vary, so make sure to ask.
Specifics of Home Insurance for Veterans
As mentioned above, there really aren’t any specific coverage needs for veterans when it comes to home insurance. There are, however, some specific discounts for which you can qualify. While there are not as many available discounts for home insurance as there are for auto insurance, they can still be found.
In addition to insurance companies serving both active duty and veterans of the military, there are insurance companies that will offer you a discount as a veteran. In most cases, you will need to provide evidence of your status to receive the discount, but every insurance company has different rules.
Our first priority in choosing the best home insurance companies for veterans was to seek out companies who make an effort to offer special benefits to military members both past and present. We looked for military discounts that apply to veterans as well as active duty military.
We also looked for companies that offer a high quality and comprehensive home insurance program, because saving money is not helpful if the coverage isn’t adequate or you are unable to get the options you want.
All of the companies on our list have a good reputation for both everyday customer service and for handling claims fairly and quickly.
To ensure this information is useful to the widest audience possible, we chose companies that offer products in most if not all states. Some local companies may also offer a great home insurance option for veterans.
Our Top Recommendations
These three companies all offer excellent home insurance programs; some offer specialty veterans programs and others offer a rate break for veterans.
Catering solely to military members, veterans, and their families, USAA is the biggest name in insurance for their target market. They live up to their promises too; USAA is always among the highest rated insurance companies for customer service and claims handling.
This company is completely dedicated to serving military members and veterans and has solid, comprehensive home insurance. They also offer a highly rated auto program with a 10% bundling discount, so it is worth getting everything quoted at once.
Not as well-known as USAA, AFI is a longstanding membership group dedicated to military members. They offer a home insurance program that is geared towards both active duty and veterans, with comprehensive coverage and a wide range of discounts available.
AFI’s home insurance program offers plenty of available endorsements, allowing you to customize your policy. Once you have been a member of AFI, your children will qualify as well. Bundling discounts are also offered.
Nationwide offers a 20% discount on homeowner’s insurance to those who are members of VetFriends.com, which can be joined for free. While they are not usually known as the least expensive insurance company around, that is a hefty discount that will make up the difference in many cases; bundling your insurance can save you even more.
Nationwide is a huge company; that means they can help you with just about any insurance need you might have. It also means their financial status is solid – and that adds up to the ability to pay claims.
Shopping for Home Insurance for Veterans
As mentioned above, the first place to start with shopping for home insurance is to know what kind of requirements your loan might carry. VA loans can differ between lenders, so it is best to check for specifics before you start getting quotes. If you do not have a VA loan, the same applies; lenders generally have some rules for the coverage on your home.
Companies that serve veterans are a great place to start your search, but it is well worth comparing them to other companies. You may well get a better rate and a better value even without a specific veterans’ discount, so do not let that option limit your choices.
Getting the right coverage is always the goal when it comes to home insurance; lower premiums are not worth it if you find yourself struggling to get a claim paid or get someone on the phone to answer your questions. Home insurance choices should always be focused more on value than on price alone.
As with all home insurance, make sure you are being covered for the true replacement cost of your home, which is not the same as the market value. When getting quotes, be certain you are comparing policies offering the same levels of coverage and same deductibles; comparing rates on vastly different policies isn’t a fair comparison.
The Bottom Line
There are some excellent companies that cater to veterans and provide excellent home insurance coverage, and some great discounts available to you as well. When you are searching for home insurance, start with the coverage you need, then compare policies that offer that coverage at a good price. That way there will be more options that perhaps do not offer a veteran’s discount, but you do not want to limit your search.
