Looking for Travel Insurance?
We Recommend Travelex
Unlike standard travel insurance, Global Guardian Air Ambulance Card does exactly – and only – what the name implies. This membership-based service provides medical evacuation services with a level of coverage well beyond what is usually included with travel medical.

About Air Ambulance Card

Air Ambulance Card was founded in 2002 to provide travelers with a comprehensive coverage option for medical evacuation. In 2017, the company was acquired by Global Guardian, a global security and risk management company. The company’s headquarters is located in McLean, VA.

Air Ambulance Card is a membership service that provides members with no cost (beyond membership fees) medical evacuation from around the world to the U.S. or Canadian hospital of their choosing. It operates differently from travel insurance, with no deductibles and no limits.

Global Guardian contracts with the owners of high-tech air ambulances around the world to provide fast service along with expert medical care en-route. Unlike standard medical evacuation on a travel plan, this type of service will move you to any hospital you choose regardless of medical necessity – that means they will move you to the hospital where you want to be treated, whether or not it is required for your treatment.

Air Ambulance Card Membership

Air Ambulance has a number of membership options, from individual short-term trip plans to longer-term expatriate and student plans. Family and corporate plans are also available.

All of these plans differ mainly in terms of length of coverage and cost. Every plan includes unlimited coverage for medical transport whenever a member is hospitalized more than 150 miles from home. Coverage includes transport within and between U.S. states as well as internationally.

The plans also include medical monitoring and consultation as well as emergency message relay. It also includes repatriation of mortal remains again with no dollar limit. There is no pre-existing condition clause in any plan.

Membership includes two separate transports fully covered in each membership year. Family plans allow one transport for each family member in the event that multiple family members require evacuation as a result of the same incident. One family member can fly for free along with the patient.

Air Ambulance offers a flat rate chart for its various plans.

The individual plan, for one person between the ages of 16 and 74, costs $265 a year. This plan covers unlimited trips as long as no one trip is longer than 3 months. The next plan up increases that limit to 6 months for $415.

Air Ambulance also has a family plan, which covers a primary insured, spouse, and up to five children under the age of 25 for a total of $385. Extended coverage is also available for these plans at higher costs,

There are not a lot of similar companies for comparison, but major competitor MedJet has rates that come in right about the same as these for similar coverage.

Since the membership is not necessarily an insurance plan with the Air Ambulance Card, there really is not any claims either. All costs are paid directly by the company with no bills to the insured, as long as the policy is up to date.

The lack of a claims procedure and the exclusions common to insurance policies are one of the major things to make membership plans stand out.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

Global Guardian Air Ambulance Card has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file in the past three years.

We found a total of 21 reviews on the company’s Facebook page, 14 of which were 5-star reviews. The content of the reviews, however, does not provide much in the way of information, and several reviews appear to be from people who have not actually used the company’s services, one even indicated the reviewer was not yet a member. As a result, the reviews here are not particularly helpful. Still, the negative reviews are also limited, which is generally a good thing.

The Bottom Line

Medical evacuation membership is the kind of thing that seems like an unnecessary expense until it is actually needed. Air Ambulance Card is not different in this sense from other such companies. Their rates are on par with other places and their reputation is generally good, although there is not quite enough consumer opinion out there for form a clear picture. For those in the market for this kind of coverage, this company is likely to deliver what you are seeking.

About Eric Stauffer

Author: Eric StaufferI am a former insurance agent and banker turned consumer advocate. My priority is to help educate individuals and families about the different types of insurance they need, and assist them in finding the best place to get it.

  1. It’s good.

  2. Have personally been emergency helicopter transported, a 20 minute trip not of my choice and was appalled at the cost. Before this experience I was not aware that as my representative blue cross insurance did not have some control in both quality and price. I commend you for what you are doing and would like to know if there is something I can do to make people aware of this so as to prevent people from being held up and bankrupted if they should be striken by some medical emergency requiring transport.
    Thank you for your efforts
