Does car insurance cover air conditioning?

Car insurance both does and doesn't cover air conditioning. While your regular car insurance will not cover A/C maintenance or damage from wear and tear, there are situations where your car insurance will pay for A/C repairs. You could also buy mechanical breakdown insurance through select insurance companies, but there are limits. It costs $800-$1,000 to replace a compressor, and you might have to go through approved mechanics.

The Highlights

  • Your regular car insurance will not pay for repairs to your car’s air conditioning unit if it malfunctions due to wear and tear
  • Four types of regular car insurance coverage may pay for A/C damage if your car suffers damage from collisions or acts of nature
  • You can buy mechanical breakdown insurance to pay for A/C repairs but it might be cheaper to get an extended warranty and regular maintenance

If your car’s air conditioning is not working, you may wonder — does car insurance cover air conditioning repair, or does my car insurance company cover air conditioning? And if not, what repairs does car insurance cover?

When you compare car insurance companies, consider the types of repairs they will cover. For starters, full coverage includes collision, comprehensive, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. All three may help pay for damages to your car.

That said, the above coverages will not cover repairs to your A/C in most cases. However, there are times when those coverages can pay for repairs to a broken car A/C unit.

When does car insurance cover air conditioning repair?

Often, if your air conditioning is not working properly, that is due to wear and tear. This is a mechanical problem. In that case, your regular car insurance will not pay for A/C repairs, so you will have to pair for repairs out of your own pocket.

However, your car insurance may help pay for A/C repairs if it was damaged in the covered incidents.

  • If your car’s air conditioning unit suffers damage due to a collision (with another car, a dead animal, or a stationary object), your collision coverage may cover the cost
  • If your car was hit by a rock, a moving animal, or damaged by natural disasters like a fire or a flood and also that damaged your A/C unit, your comprehensive coverage may kick in
  • According to the Insurance Information Institute, Uninsured Motorist Property Damage coverage will help you pay for damages to your car and property if the at-fault driver has no insurance. This applies if the collision damaged your A/C

The fourth type of car insurance that can cover A/C repairs is another driver’s property damage liability coverage. If the other driver was at fault for your accident and your A/C suffered damage in that accident, the other driver is liable for the cost.

In all these cases, you must file a claim with your insurance company. You may have to pay a deductible if your car insurance company fulfills the claim.

Does car insurance cover air conditioning replacement parts, and how much does it cost?

More specifically, is your car’s A/C compressor covered under insurance? Yes, your car insurance can pay for replacement A/C parts — provided that your A/C was damaged by anything other than wear and tear.

Since your compressor is the most important part of your car’s A/C unit, it will cost the most to replace. An entire compressor replacement may cost from $800 to $1,000, and the labor may cost at least $300.

Should you buy mechanical repair insurance?

Alternatively, you may purchase mechanical breakdown insurance (also known as car repair insurance). Car repair insurance may also cover repairs to your car’s engine, drivetrain, transmission, brakes, exhaust system, power system, steering, A/C, and fuel system.

Now, mechanical breakdown insurance serves acts like an extended warranty. An extended warranty has limits, and mechanical breakdown coverage may cover things beyond the scope of the extended warranty. However, there are also limits to car repair insurance.

  • Not all car companies offer this type of coverage. Only a few top companies — AAA, Allstate, American Family, GEICO, Liberty Mutual, and Mercury — offer this coverage, and you might only get referrals to approved mechanics.
  • This coverage will not help you pay for major repairs that count as normal maintenance, new filters, new spark plugs, new tires, new brake pads, or adding fluids (like coolant, oil, and wiper fluid).
  • Usually, car insurance companies will remove this coverage once your car accumulates 100,000 miles or it is seven years old, whichever comes first.

Additionally, some companies, like GEICO or Mercury insurance, have stricter policies regarding car repair insurance.

  • If you have GEICO, you must get this coverage when your car is less than 15 months old and has fewer than 15,000 miles.
  • If you have Mercury Insurance, you will need to get mechanical breakdown insurance within 30 days of your car’s original warranty. Prices for Mercury’s coverage increase the closer you get to that expiration date.

The coverage will help you save money on repairs to your A/C, and it carries a $250 deductible.

Ultimately, you may have better coverage with an extended warranty. They have fewer limitations, you may purchase those from your car’s manufacturer, and you can negotiate the price.

Car Insurance and A/C Repair: The Bottom Line

When it comes to paying for repairs to your car’s A/C, you need to be proactive. First, choose a policy that offers full coverage.

Secondly, avoid breakdowns to your car’s A/C by sending your car in for regular maintenance. Mechanics can detect any problems to your A/C early and recommend cheaper remedies.

Lastly, while having mechanical breakdown insurance may give you peace of mind, weigh the cost benefits of buying it. Your car insurance, warranty, and regular maintenance offer sufficient coverage most of the time.
