National Interstate Insurance was founded in 1989 in Richfield, Ohio. They operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of National Interstate Corporation, which also owns Vanliner Insurance Company. Through subsidiaries and affiliates, National Interstate operates in Ohio, Missouri, Hawaii, and Alaska.

The product focus in on the commercial transportation industry, with some operations also offering standard commercial coverage. Products are sold through independent agents as well as affiliated agencies. National Interstate Insurance Products

The product lineup from National Interstate is specialized, with custom insurance programs available for much of the transportation industry. They also have some general commercial products in specific areas, and they provide Alternative Risk Transfer (ART) plans as well.

Transportation Products

National Interstate’s transportation insurance policies cover a variety of fleet and individual transportation businesses. These include:

  • Trucking companies
  • Two truck fleets
  • Community Medical Transport companies
  • Passenger Transport companies including charter buses, limousines, transit fleets, and more
  • LP Operators
  • Waste operations, including residential waste, construction and demolition debris removal, recycling, and non-hazardous industrial waste
  • Ambulance companies

General Commercial

General commercial package policies are available in Hawaii and in Alaska. These policies include commercial liability, business property, and other optional coverage such as commercial auto.

Currently, this type of policy is not offered in any other states.

Alternative Risk Transfer (ART)

ART plans are available for transportation companies that wish to approach their insurance needs a little differently.

These programs are essentially self-insurance; companies pay into a fund to handle claims and can be reimbursed for unused funds at the end of the year or even earn investment income, depending on how the company performs that year.

Other Products

Also available are crane, rigging, and specialized carriers’ products as well as the option to purchase cyber liability.

RV insurance coverage is available through a partnership with Explorer RV Insurance Agency.


Rates are not available for this company, and that is just what we would expect given the specialty and commercial nature of the products they sell. These types of products require a detailed rating process that cannot be handled via an online quote.

Again, because this company’s products are specialized, they can only be compared to other companies writing the same specialty products in terms of rates.


National Interstate offers online claims reporting, which is unusual for a specialty company like this one.

They also have a 24/7 toll-free line, with a different line for Hawaii and Alaska. Claims can also be submitted via fax – again these numbers differ for Alaska and Hawaii versus the contiguous states.

There is not a lot of claims information, but that is common for this type of company. They do make it easy to find the right contact information and offer several options for filing, after which their representatives will assist with any questions and get the insured through the process.

Ratings and Consumer Reviews

National Interstate has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are only three complaints on file in the past three years, all of which were closed more than twelve months prior to this review.

There are 16 reviews on Google with an overall 4.4-star rating. This a pretty high rating, but the content of the reviews isn’t particularly helpful. Some appear to be from people who work for the company, and only one – the single negative review – actually describes a customer experience.

We found little else in the way of reviews for this company, which is not unusual for a specialty insurer.

The Bottom Line

If you are in the market for any of the specialty policies offered by National Interstate, they are likely worth comparing especially given the specific nature of the coverage they write. There’s little to go on in terms of recommending this company, but no red flags to report, either.

  1. I have been receiving wc checks since October and they are always late. I went 6 weeks without once which caused great problems. As for treatment….. just deny deny deny…. Worthless and basic human rights violations.

  2. I had a fender bender in my rv with another rv and National Interstate was very prompt and courteous….the claim was paid and the rv fixed in 2 weeks!! Very happy with their service. so sorry for all of you that have had problems.

  4. They are horrible slow processing claims that they do not pay . I had $16,000 worth of water damage to my camper and they told me that they have an exclusion for water damage, gradual water damage, and would not pay to have my fifth wheel repaired . I sent them documentation that it was one time water damage not gradual water damage they still denied my coverage. I drop them like a hot potato as far as I’m concerned they are pieces of crap . If you were smart you would stay clear.

    • My Name is William Heggan and I had a motorhome fire and they refuse too pay me even though I had full coverage all of a sudden they pulled a part D out of the clear blue sky I am not getting reimbursed for my loss

      • My husband and I are going through the same thing Mr.Heggan is. Due to an electric malfunction our RV caught on fire and my husband with his common sense used an extinguisher to put it out. They flashed that same D clause and basically told us in so many words “you should have let it burn”. Really? So the next time something like that happens we should grab a camera to prove that we were on fire! Now we are almost on our third month with this claim and we will have to file bankruptcy. Thank you, National Interstate, for cementing that there are still ruthless pricks destroying the lives of those who do the right thing.

  5. Please Stay away from them! Especially their workmens compensation insurance. They care nothing for your well being, if you get hurt on the job, expect slow processing of your claim, plus they will try to find any excuse to justify not paying! I do not recommend them

    • I’m in the middle of a workers comp claim with these people and I have to tell you they are the absolute worst. Is there anyone that’s interested in filing a class action lawsuit against this company?

When I purchased my RV from Camping World I got a free Good Sam membership and when I closed on my RV they mentioned insuring it with Good Sam and I automatically assumed it was from a fair reputable company…after all it’s Good Sam right? WRONG!! Run…run far away and never insure your RV with Good Sam…I’m a travel nurse and went through a major hail storm with mine not even 3 months after I purchased it…I checked with the company my policy was with, National Interstate, because my skylight and one roof vent was broken in the storm…I asked about getting them repaired right away instead of paying someone to cover them up…after all why not fix them because I’m living in my camper and would pay salvage value and keep it even if it was totaled to give me time to find something different…they said that was fine and I would be reimbursed for the repairs when they got the damage estimate on my unit….WRONG AGAIN!!! They now tell me it’s totaled and will not only not allow me to retain the unit but they will not reimburse me for the repairs they said they would reimburse me for!! And they won’t pay me for my unit until they come get it…so where am I suppose to put all my belongings out of my camper after they take mine and I wait for them to send me a check and I find a different one?!?! WHAT A NIGHTMARE!! My Dad had a total loss and American Family took less than a week to give him a settlement which allowed him to keep his to use while he found a new one…I’ve been fighting with these bozos for almost 3 weeks now and the only thing I’ve gotten is an eviction notice and lots of stress, anguish and sleepless nights…don’t make the same mistake I did…go to some place reputable for your insurance!

  7. They were very slow to process claims that they eventually denied and in my opinion were covered by my policy.
    I do not recommend!
