If you require prescription drugs as part of your cancer treatment that are taken at home rather than administered in a hospital or clinic, that will be covered under Medicare Part D.

Medicare Part D coverage may have deductibles or co-payments for prescription drugs, If you have purchased a supplemental plan with Part D or have prescription coverage as part of a Medicare Advantage plan, your coverage may be somewhat different. Since plans that are purchased from private insurance companies may have additional coverage or a different formulary from Original Medicare, you will need to check with your provider.

What is the cost of cancer treatment with Medicare?

With Original Medicare, you will pay any deductibles that are applicable, which apply for both Part A and Part B depending on the treatment. For Part B coverage, your health care coinsurance amount is 20 percent, which means Medicare covers 80 percent.

If you have a Medicare Supplement plan, you may have little to no out of pocket cost. Each plan has a different level of coverage, but there are plans available that pay both deductibles as well as the coinsurance cost. You will have to pay the monthly cost of the supplemental plan.

Your out-of-pocket costs with a Medicare Advantage plan will vary. One of the benefits of Medicare Advantage is that it allows you to choose your level of coverage, and pay a higher monthly premium in order to avoid out-of-pocket expenses in the future.

Of course, the final cost of your Medicare treatment will depend on what sort of treatment you require. Your age will have no bearing on this amount or on what is covered by Medicare.
