DTRIC stands for Dai Tokyo Real Insurance Company, reflecting the ownership of the insurer by a Japanese insurance giant. DTRIC was founded to serve Hawaiians in 1992, responding to a downturn in available auto insurance options for drivers on the island.
Two years after entering the auto insurance market, DTRIC moved into commercial insurance, again responding to the difficulties Hawaiian companies were facing in obtaining Worker’s Compensation and other business insurance. Today, the company continues to write auto and business coverage, and also offers home and umbrella insurance.
DTRIC is owned by Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Company, Limited, which is a subsidiary of MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings, Inc., Japan’s largest non-life insurance company.
DTRIC policies are sold across Hawaii by authorized independent agents.
DTRIC focuses on the basics of personal lines and also writes commercial business. The one major area in which they do not offer coverage is life insurance.
DTRIC offers full service auto insurance policies, meeting all of the state requirements for liability coverage. They also offer extended coverage options.
Comprehensive and Collision coverage, which provide for repairs to your own vehicle when another driver is not responsible, can be added to the liability policy. Drivers who choose to add these two options receive free roadside assistance coverage, which is an added premium at many other insurance companies.
Policyholders with collision coverage also qualify for the Deductible Wipeout Program. The insured’s collision deductible goes down for every year without a claim, until it reaches $0.
DTRIC offers a good range of discounts, including:
- Late model car
- Multiple car
- Continuous coverage
- Safe driving
- Safety features
Like several other large insurance companies, DTRIC offers an optional tracking device called Akamai Rater. This device measures driving habits, including time spent on the road, speed, and braking. Drivers can earn a discount on their insurance based on the data recorded by the device. The company promises discounts of up to 40%, and offers a Dashboard where users can log in to see what has been recorded.
DTRIC offers standard homeowner’s insurance policies covering the house itself, other structures, personal property, and personal liability. In addition to the basics, options can be added as needed to cover things such as high-value items.
An unusual component offered by DTRIC is equipment breakdown insurance, which is covered at no extra charge. This provides for repairs to things like heating and cooling systems and appliances. Most insurance companies, if they offer this, charge an additional premium.
There is a discount of up to 25% for bundling home and auto together, as well as a list of other available discounts, such as loss-free and new construction discounts.
DTRIC also offers hurricane insurance as an add-on option. This is underwritten by another company, GeoVera Insurance.
Renter’s Insurance is also available from DTRIC to cover the personal property of tenants and provide personal liability coverage. Many of the same discounts offered with homeowner’s insurance are also available with a renter’s policy, including the auto/home discount.
The other personal lines product available from DTRIC is Umbrella Insurance. Policies are available with limits of $1 million or $2 million. This coverage provides additional liability above and beyond the limits of auto and home policies.
DTRIC writes a full range of commercial insurance policies, but their website provides very little details on the coverage.
Available policies include:
- Commercial Auto
- General Liability
- Worker’s Compensation
- Business Property
- Inland Marine
- Commercial Umbrella
DTRIC has an online quoting system, but as they offer coverage only in Hawaii we are not able to compare their rates to our usual sample.
The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs in Hawaii publishes rate comparisons annually, along with complaint ratios for insurance companies operating in the state. This comparison chart provides rates for several different counties. A look at the chart places DTRIC’s rates generally in the moderate to high brackets in comparison to other companies.
DTRIC offers a 24-hour claims hotline for reporting by phone. They also have an online claim form that can be used for auto, home, or worker’s compensation claims.
The company has a preferred repair shop network that connects directly with the claims department for the purpose of simplifying the process. Repairs done at one of these shops are guaranteed for as long as the car is owned. As always, the insured has the right to choose a different shop for repairs, even one that is not in the preferred network, but forgoes the guarantee.
DTRIC provides a comprehensive claims knowledge center on the website, explaining the claims process and answering common questions.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
DTRIC is Better Business Bureau (BBB) accredited and has an A+ rating as of the time of this review. There has been only one customer complaint in the past three years, and that complaint was closed within the past 12 months.
The previously referenced Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs rating comparison chart also lists the number of complaints the state received regarding each insurance company. DTRIC had 5 complaints filed in 2015. This is a ratio of 0.191 per 1,000 cars insured. By comparison, most other major insurers in the state had higher ratios.
Yelp reviews for DTRIC are mainly negative, although there are a few positive reviews mixed in, enough to result in a 2.5 star rating overall. DTRIC does make an effort to respond to the negative reviews and offer assistance in resolving the problem, which is a positive thing to see. There are a total of 21 reviews here, and all of them are more than a full year old at the time of this review.
Overall, the reviews and complaint volumes are fairly low for a company of this size.
The Bottom Line
DTRIC is a company worth considering for Hawaiian drivers. While they don’t appear to have the best rates, they do hold a good reputation and offer some perks on their policies that will cost extra at most other insurance companies. They are likely to appeal to those who prefer an agent-driven company with a focus solely on the local insurance market, in this case Hawaii.
