About Family Life Insurance Company
Originally focused on mortgage protection life insurance policies, Family Life Insurance Company was founded in 1949. They continued to add life insurance options over the years, and they write mainly simplified issue plans aimed at providing families with basic coverage at lower death benefit levels.
Family Life Insurance Company is a part of Manhattan Life Group, a group of life insurance companies that offer a range of products but tend to be of a similar nature to those written by Family Life. They operate out of a joint headquarters in Texas.
Products, including Medicare Supplement, are sold through independent agents, and are underwritten by Manhattan Life Insurance Company or Western United Life Assurance Company – Family Life does not appear to underwrite Medicare plans directly. It is actually unclear whether they are directly involved with any of the plans, but we took a look at what is on the shared website.
Family Life Medicare Supplement
The plans that are available through Family Life’s association with other companies in Manhattan Life Group are Plans A, C, F, G, and N.
Plan A is the base level Medicare Supplement plan. All insurance companies that sell Medicare Supplement are required to offer this plan. It pays for all Medicare Parts A and B coinsurance, as well as the first three pints of blood each year.
Plan F is the high-end plan, which covers all of the out of pocket expenses not covered by Medicare. While there is a high deductible version of this plan available, Family Life/Manhattan Life does not appear to offer it.
Medicare Supplement rates are not offered online. There is a link to fill out a form and request that an agent contact you for a quote – this is likely to result in ongoing solicitation, which may be bothersome to some people.
Without rates, we are unable to compare Family Life Insurance Company to others in terms of value.
Although there is claims information as well as forms available for other types of insurance, we found no claim information for Medicare Supplement on the website. This is common, as medical bills are usually handled directly between the provider and the insurance company, and the insured is rarely involved in the process.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Family Life has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), with only two complaints on file. Since they are a part of Manhattan Life, it is also worth a look at the group’s BBB page. Manhattan Life Group also has an A+ rating, with only 10 complaints on file.
The company has a 2-star rating on Google based on four reviews, but the review content is not particularly useful, with little detail as to the reasons for the low rating. One rating is due to difficulties with the company website.
Beyond this we did not find much else on Family Life. This may be due to the company’s status as part of Manhattan Life Group, but in general it is a good sign when there are few reviews of an insurance company.
The Bottom Line
There is not a lot of information out there on Family Life, but there are really no red flags or concerns either. They have a decent selection of Medicare Supplement plans, but those are underwritten by other companies, so you may want to go with a company that underwrites their plans directly.
