About Country Financial
Country Mutual Insurance Company (initially known as Farmers Mutual Reinsurance Company) was founded by the Illinois Agricultural Association in 1925 to provide insurance to farmers. Initially offering fire and lightning insurance, they quickly added life, crop, and auto products. In 1965 Country expanded into the financial services market, offering securities and later mutual funds and savings plans.
With mergers and acquisitions over the years, the company expanded well beyond the borders of Illinois. In 2008, they took on the name Country Financial to represent their group of companies. Today, Country is licensed in 40states, and offer both personal and commercial lines products as well as a range of supplemental insurance and financial products.
Country products are sold through independent agents in all of their operating areas. Their headquarters is located in Bloomington, IL.
Currently, Country Life Insurance Company sells Medicare Supplement Insurance only in the state of Illinois. Country does have companies in several other states, but the website indicates that they do not sell Medicare coverage directly in those states. The website does mention that Country may be able to assist customers with obtaining a plan through other companies and states; but it is unclear which states or which companies are involved.
In Illinois, Country offers a selection of the standardized Medicare Supplement plans used by most states in the country. Of the eleven standardized plans, Country offers 5. These are A, C, D, F, and high deductible Plan F.
A is a plan that is required for all insurance companies, while the rest are selected to provide extra coverage options. The most basic of the plans, A covers the coinsurance costs for medical, hospital, and hospice, and also pays for three pints of blood each year.
Each of the remaining plans adds additional coverage, with Plan F having the highest level. Under Plan F, all out-of-pocket expenses not paid for by Medicare are covered. The high deductible option is identical in coverage with the exception of adding a deductible that must be met before coverage kicks in. This allows the plan to be offered at a lower monthly premium.
Plans A and F are two very popular plans, but it’s surprising that Country doesn’t offer either G or N, both of which are among the most common choices at other companies. Both C and D offer coverage options that fall in between the basic and the comprehensive plans offered by A and F.
Medicare rate quotes are not available online from Country, and because they only offer coverage directly in Illinois, we can’t compare to our sample state, California.
Country does offer online quoting for several other products, most of which are far more complex in terms of the rating process than Medicare. It’s surprising to see that they haven’t added Medicare Supplement to their online quoting options, although this may be because it is a smaller branch of their business than products like auto insurance.
Ratings and Reviews
Country Financial has an A- rating with the Better Business Bureau. There have been a total of 39 complaints filed in the past three years, 13 of those closed in the past 12 months.
There are 13 reviews on Pissed Consumer, with complaints regarding unhelpful agents, poor customer service, and dissatisfied customers regarding claims. Similar complaints appear on Consumer Affairs, where there are 51 reviews, although the page on this site is dedicated to their homeowner’s insurance division.
We weren’t able to find anything directly pertaining to the Medicare Supplement plans or service; this isn’t surprising given the fact that it is a very small portion of Country’s business. Overall, for the size of this company, the number of complaints is low.
The Bottom Line
Country Financial may be a good option for Medicare Supplement insurance if you live in Illinois, and particularly if you already deal with Country for other policies. Since they don’t provide rates online, we can’t form a conclusion as to the value offered versus other companies, however, the company’s reputation makes them a fairly solid choice and worth contacting for a quote.
