Westfield Insurance Summary
Westfield Insurance was founded in 1848 in Westfield Center, Ohio as a farm insurance company. Originally known as The Farmers Mutual Insurance Company, a few years later the name was changed to Ohio Farmers Insurance Company, a company that still exists as a subsidiary of Westfield today. In 1971, as the company grew, the name Westfield Companies was chosen to encompass all of their operations.
Today the Westfield Group writes personal and/or commercial lines policies in 21 states, and offers surety services in 50 states as well. Their product range encompasses basics of personal insurance – auto, home, and umbrella as well as boat insurance – and insurance for a variety of businesses both large and small. They continue to write farm insurance as well and are one of the top companies in that market in the U.S.

Quotes are currently only available through an agent. The website directs visitors to enter basic information in order to be directed to a local agent to obtain premium information. As a result, there is not a quick way to compare rates from Westfield with other companies.
As an agent-driven company, rates are likely a little higher due to the need to pay commissions. Westfield does offer bundling, which is a good way to bring down rates, and is likely to make them more competitive for those looking to insure both auto and a home.
Claims can be reported to Westfield either through an agent, by calling their 24-hour claims line (866-937-2663), or by email. Auto glass claims can be filed directly online, or via a separate phone line. There is a third line for roadside assistance.
Westfield attempts to contact the insured within 24 hours of the claim being submitted. They also promise fast processing times and quick settlements. Their website has a clear explanation of the claims process.
There are claims offices throughout the area where Westfield writes insurance, designed to help expedite claims.
Westfield has an A+ rating with the BBB and shows a total of 19 complaints in the past three years, with three of those closed in the past 12 months. This is a relatively low number of complaints for a company of this size.
There are some negative reviews out there, mostly pertaining to billing issues and unsatisfactory claims handling. These are fairly common for insurance companies, and they do not appear in enough numbers to be of serious concern.
There are also several positive reviews, always encouraging to see with an insurance company given the fact that people are far less likely to write reviews when they are happy than when they are unhappy with a company.
|Rating Company||Grade||Financial Outlook|
Westfield offers a fairly good range of products, and their auto/home bundles are definitely a value-added program that offers more than the average insurance bundle. As an agent-driven company, however, they are likely to be somewhat more expensive than similar direct-buy companies. Their reputation seems fairly solid, with little of major concern in the reviews, however it is difficult to compare rates given the lack of online quoting. As a result, Westfield may be worth comparison but may also lose the attention of those looking to get fast and easy quotes.
