Stonewood is headquartered in Rancho Cordova, California, and is a managing general agency focused mainly on serving the non-standard auto insurance market. The company makes it difficult to obtain clear information regarding their products and services by maintaining two websites, one located here and the other here. Both websites feature the same name, logo, and mailing address, making it clear they are the same company, however, there is no explanation as to why two web addresses are in use. The second website, featuring a more confusing web address, offers considerably more information.
Founded in 2005, Stonewood helps drivers in need of high-risk auto insurance find coverage with several insurance companies specializing in non-standard policies. They recently also started writing renter’s insurance, dental insurance, and pet insurance, which are a somewhat odd combination of product lines.
According to the website, Stonewood underwrites and processes policies for several carriers, and also handles the customer service and billing side. The auto insurance carriers they work with are National General, Western General, and Nevada General. Stonewood does not underwrite the renter’s, dental or pet insurance plans.
Stonewood products are sold through producers in California and in Arizona.
The four products listed on the Stonewood website (both sites) are auto, renter’s, dental, and pet insurance. The site offers very little in the way of information regarding these policies.
Stonewood’s auto insurance products are non-standard, which means they are aimed at those who have a poor driving record, credit problems, and other issues that can cause difficulty obtaining the legally required coverage.
The company underwrites and services these policies through three carriers, something of an unusual setup that may confuse some policyholders. Non-standard insurance is often designed mainly to meet the state’s legal requirements for liability, but the common add-on options are also available.
Stonewood’s renter’s insurance policy is underwritten by First American Property & Casualty Company but marketed under the Stonewood name.
The Renters Direct policy offers personal property and liability coverage to tenants, and although information is limited, appears to be a standard renter’s policy. Since different companies underwrite them, it is unlikely that Stonewood offers a multi-policy discount for those with both auto and renter’s insurance.
The dental insurance link on the Stonewood site leads to a different website where Stonewood is featured as the broker for various dental insurance options. Stonewood is only the broker and not involved in policy administration.
Like the dental insurance, the pet insurance link takes the visitor to a different site, PetPlan Pet Insurance. This company is not directly affiliated with Stonewood and is underwritten and administered by two different insurance companies.
Stonewood Insurance Rates
Stonewood does not offer online quoting but helps visitors to the site to locate a producer to provide a quote.
Since they are a non-standard insurer, we would not expect their rates to be competitive with standard national insurance companies. High-risk drivers are always more expensive to insure than those who qualify for standard rates.
Both Stonewood websites offer a list of claims phone numbers that are based on the first three characters of the policy number. This likely relates to the various companies through which Stonewood writes insurance.
Some of the options have a file online selection, but this takes the customer off of the Stonewood site and to the site of the company that wrote the policy. Online claims filing appears to be offered for American General policies as well as those issued by companies in the MAPFRE family.
Stonewood itself does not appear to be involved directly in the claims process at any stage.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Stonewood has a B rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are 34 complaints on file in the past three years, 18 of which were closed in the past 12 months. The BBB cites the number of complaints as a factor influencing the lower rating of this company.
There are 50 reviews of Stonewood on Yelp, resulting in a one-star overall review. The reviews are scathing and repeatedly cite rude, unprofessional customer service as well as slow claims service and attempts to avoid paying claims.
The 82 Google reviews paint a similar picture. The three positive reviews do little to change the overall impression or the 1.1-star rating for this company.
Stonewood has a lot of very angry customers and the reviews repeat the same issues over and over – always a red flag. Combined with the complex nature of their dealings with brokers, agents, and other insurance companies as well as the confusion of two websites and a lack of available policy information, this company fails to make a good impression.
The Bottom Line
Finding non-standard insurance can be a challenge, leading many drivers to feel stuck with whatever they can find, but when it comes to Stonewood, we recommend considering other non-standard insurance options. The company’s approach leaves us with a lot of questions and is likely to be even more confusing to the average insurance customer. The long list of repeated complaints against Stonewood completes the picture of a company with some red flags concerning customer service and claims.
