Repwest Insurance Summary
Repwest Insurance, formerly known as Republic Western, is a subsidiary of AMERCO and provides insurance for U-Haul, its customers and dealers, and for independent self-storage companies.
Republic Western falls under the umbrella of AMERCO, which is the parent company of U-Haul International, the largest fleet of moving and storage solutions in North America. AMERCO controls U-Haul International, Republic Western Insurance, AMERCO Real Estate Company and Oxford Life Insurance Company.
Repwest Insurance does not provide life insurance products, but AMERCO’s Oxford Life Insurance Company does however. Both Repwest and Oxford Life were founded and continue to operate out of Arizona and both provide coverage across the country.
Republic Western Insurance operates out of three US Field offices located in Arizona, Nebraska and Pennsylvania and one office in Canada. That said, Repwest insurance is available throughout the entirety of the United States and Canada.
Repwest provides cargo protection, medical and accidental death insurance while renting a U-Haul truck, and damage waiver for truck and trailer rental.
It also provides insurance for items in storage that are typically not covered under a storage facility’s insurance or a homeowner policy.
In addition, the company provides risk transfer insurance to the insurance industry.

Many auto policies offer coverage for rental vehicles and shipping as an additional endorsement on a policy. Repwest’s rates generally are higher than the cost of this endorsement, but are a reasonable option if a U-Haul rental is infrequent.
U-Haul claims are filed online, or with the help of a local U-Haul operator. Self-storage claims through Repwest’s Safestor program are filed online. Claims can be filed by phone at 877-528-5674, option 2.
Although the company is not accredited on the site, the Better Business Bureau rates Repwest an A+. There have been a total of 8 complaints in the last three years, four of them closed in the last 12 months. All of the complaints are based on issues with the product/service of Repwest. Reading the complaints, it seems the customers feel as though their claims were handled unfairly, not a surprise for most insurance companies really.
Results from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are mixed. Based on a national median complaint ratio of 1.00, Repwest received the following scores at the NAIC Center in 2016:
- Commercial Auto: 1,225.50 (eight complaints).
- Commercial Property: 2.74 (four complaints).

Both auto and homeowner policies often offer endorsements (additions) that provide coverage for rental vehicles, goods in transit, or goods in storage, and these endorsements can sometimes cost less than coverage from Repwest. Repwest is a viable option for one-time, one-way rental needs or for very short-term storage periods, but its record for handling complaints suggests it may be a low priority option for any extended need.
