About Patriot Insurance
Patriot Mutual Insurance Company was founded in Maine in 1966, a subsidiary of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Maine. The official company name was Blue Mutual Alliance d/b/a Patriot Mutual Insurance Company. For several decades the company operated in the health insurance industry.

A 2007 merger with Frankenmuth Insurance expanded the product lineup further, and in 2015 they began writing life insurance in both Maine and Vermont. Patriot is an agent-driven insurer and as such does not offer online quoting. In fact, the website offers their justification for this decision in the form of a page dedicated to the value of personal service from an agent.
Without a quote we are unable to compare Patriot’s rates to others; furthermore, they do not offer coverage in our usual sample state. Small insurance companies that rely on agents do not usually compete well with the large, national insurance companies. That said, Patriot does offer bundling discounts across auto, home, and life, which can make a big difference in rates.
Although they choose not to offer online quoting, Patriot does offer claims reporting options on par with a larger company.
There is a 24/7 claims reporting line that can be reached toll-free. Policyholders can also contact their agent in order to file a claim. Finally, claims can also be filed online, with different portals for reporting different types of claims, from auto physical damage to worker’s compensation.
They also offer a claims FAQ section and a page dedicated to helping customers decide which claims reporting method is best suited to their needs. Overall, claims information is comprehensive and easy to locate.
Ratings and Consumer Reviews
Patriot Insurance Company currently has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and there are no complaints on file for the past three years.
There are a total of 12 reviews on Google with an overall star rating of 2.4. Among the negative reviews, there are a few positive reviews scattered, bringing up the overall rating. Most complaints are in regards to denial of claims and problems with adjusters, common complaints to most companies.
We were unable to find much else in terms of reviews of this company. Overall the complaint volume is low and the content of the complaints is not unusual.
The Bottom Line
Patriot Insurance will appeal to those who like a homegrown company with the personal service offered by an agent. The lack of information on products and rates makes it difficult to compare them to other companies, but there is nothing in the reviews or ratings that raises red flags. They offer one-stop shopping for most needs and plenty of online services outside of quoting, combining the old school with the modern.
